Title: Delays before doors open on SWT
Post by: Surrey 455 on August 14, 2011, 20:16:14
On the class 450's and possibly others operated by SWT why does there seem to be a long delay between the train stopping and the door buttons activating?

The agreed operating procedure is that the guard opens his door first, checks the whole of the train is at the platform, and then releases the rest of the doors.  The guards do this quite religiously AFAICT, having watched the procedure from outside the train a few times, but I think it only takes them about 10 secs, although it does seem much longer.

Health and Safety really.

Remarkable to think that doors were once only held closed by a latch.

When BR was under pressur to justify spending money on ATP to reduce SPADS, they came up with using the ratio of cost per life saved.  When they did this they found that there were a significant number of fatalities from passengers falling from incorrectly closed doors and that fitting door locks on Mk3 slam door coaches produced the highest return.  So it is not just madness.

Secret is to get off at the same doors the guard uses- gives you a good head start to the ticket barriers and thence towards the car-park exit.
