Problem is how do you prove it.  Both stations are gated so the machines would have retained any tickets.

I'm sure most people won't get too hung up on 40p. Bet most people are season ticket holders that make regular journeys.

Would this machine not be one that was owned and operated by South West Trains?

Is there a SWT machine at Reading?

The problem was at Basingstoke.

Amazing.  I read the article twice and still saw it as "at Reading".

Yes SWTs ticket machine was at fault in this instance. Poor research by the bbc.

Does seem odd that in that article FGW appears to be doing the "sackcloth and ashes" for what looks like SWT's mistake. Would have thought that more people are likely to use XC than FGW for BSK-RDG journeys anyway given the faster journey time and greater frequency...

It is a bit like Readfing to Wokingham - if you turn up and there is an all stations train about to leave you will catch it because even if there is a non stop service leaving soon after it isnt going to overtake the all stations.

Glad I wasnt the only one!

It isn't necessarily SWT though.  AIUI all the fares systems use the same original database to load up their machines, so everyone's version of Basingstoke - Reading should be identical, whether bought from a TVM or a ticket office?

I wouldn't expect someone in an SWT back office somewhere is loading FGW fares one by one and making a typo, surely it's more automated than that?

or as they are all updated online maybe the machines update failed to install due to network issues

Would they know how much money was generated by this? Maybe they could donate it to a charity- be a good bit of PR.
