Title: British Rail uniform insignia query
Post by: inspector_blakey on December 06, 2011, 03:28:39
Not exactly sure of the period, but I do know that old British Rail uniform coats/jackets at one stage used to have patches towards the cuff with stripes denoting the different grades of staff. The only one I'm sure of is that guards had a double silver stripe - can anyone point me in the direction of a list of the others...? The interweb seems to be drawing a blank on this one!

You could try emailing the National Railway Museum in York. Their archives may have that information. I know they have some British Rail era uniforms on display.

As an ASM I think I had 2 gold and gold round my cap peak.

SM I think had 3 Area Manager wore civies.

So Station Inspector probably had 1.

But it's 40 years ago.

At Sutton we had Area Manager Cheam, SM Sutton with two ASMs early and late weekdays Saturday early and on call that weekend plus Station Inspectors (shift) for Sutton. The ASMs looked after all the stations and signal boxes on the St Helier Line plus Carshalton Beeches and Wallington. Overmanaged?

On the Southern Region platform staff had the red or blue edging to their uniforms, hats.

I think this depending on their grade i.e. Railman, Chargehand etc.

I did like the 'pill-box hats', their was always somewhere to stick your pencil (unofficially).
