16  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Wasting a ^Milllion or Two. on: March 04, 2014, 09:00:12
With only 18 months left I find it beyond belief that on 1st April both the APCOA (Car parking company used at GWR (Great Western Railway) - controlled stations in the area) car park and Building Maintenance contacts (Lorne Stuart) change.
OK re Car Park, it's new signage with new uniform and vans  for staff.
That will cost hundreds of thousands ^, but to change maintenance contract will cost heck of a lot more. Maybe ^2M plus.
For 18 months CRAZY.
17  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Devon / Forward Travel (Exmouth). on: August 26, 2013, 00:36:03
Here's one to look at.

At Exmouth Station there is a poster about forward travel giving local villages and the bus service you need and a Map showing where to catch your bus.

However this poster gives the nearest Bus stops as being in "The Parade"

I'd suggest catching the Bus at the Bus Station, which at Exmouth is err NEXT to the train station.

For a bonus have a look at the destination which also reads (please remove Rail symbol).

And is FGW (First Great Western) so hard up for money that they can't repair the lights in the waiting shelters, only one tube working out off six in one and two out off six in the other.

18  All across the Great Western territory / Smoke and Mirrors / Re: The Dark side of First. on: August 22, 2013, 11:18:14
I've seen said poster in a few locations, have tired the Number which doesn't work.

There is an Email address, which I didn't try, but Email is NOT confidential, and when someone plucks up courage to report Bullying (or whatever) and can't get through on a helpline, shameful.

What would happen if the Samaritains weren't avaliable when somebody called?

Good point about the Samaratains!
19  All across the Great Western territory / Smoke and Mirrors / The Dark side of First. on: August 16, 2013, 20:57:09
I'm no fan of First group, from what I see of First their Priorities are,

1, Big Profits,

2, More Profits,

3, Company Image,

4, Stakeholders,

5, Safety,

6, Customers,

7, Staff.

Of course after 7 years or more working for First most staff will have a loyalty towards FGW (First Great Western), but here is something to think about, this is for First staff to think upon but the customers of FGW may wish to comment.

In almost every booking on point, depot, office and station, it also appears to be a general First poster so would appear to apply to FTP (File Transfer Protocol), FSR (First Scot Rail), and First bus there is an A4 size poster, it reads,

Harassment, Discrimination, Safety, Security or any other matter, contact this help line.

So First is a caring employer, well it would be, but this is the Number to ring

0800 234 5291

Go on try to get through. NO SUCH NUMBER.

That's really useful if a person is in real need.
I'd love to hear from FGW management on this one.

Shameful

First Great Western is the Worst Railway company I EVER worked for.

Shame as Mr Hopwood is a nice chap, with true intent, but he needs to take lessons in Snake charming.
21  All across the Great Western territory / Smoke and Mirrors / Dry toilets, oh the mess! on: August 14, 2013, 20:14:32
As a newbie, I hope this is in the right place, forgive me if it's not.

I'm no fan of first group, but since 2006 first great western have fitted more seats to HST (High Speed Train) cars, what else did first do?
They remove the toilet from coach A and one from coach H, and then wonder why toilets run dry, which off course means blocked and stinking toilets, not nice.

Of course seasoned travellers know this horrible fact, but to add insult, first have also withdrawn watering equipment at Exeter St David's and also Plymouth, did you know that?
With more passengers travelling, trains should be watered more often not less.  well I'm fed up with dry toilets on fgw trains, anyone know the contact details for Reading area environmental Health?
Time to make a phone call.

Dark Star.
22  All across the Great Western territory / Introductions and chat / Hello and Hi. on: August 13, 2013, 19:03:22
Hello to everyone in FGW (First Great Western) land "Dark Star" calling in.

I reckon you could call me a career railwayman as steam (it was no longer king but) was still running on BR (British Rail(ways)) when my railway career began.
I had many jobs from shunting to signal boxes, worked at many stations, depots and freight yards.
My best day was hitching a footplate ride on an ex LMS (London Midland Scottish - 1923 to 1948) Black 5, something magical about steam at 70mph and more running at sunset into a cold frosty night.
As retirement calls me to "play" trains on a heritage railway, I will say I was very sad when First won the Greater Western franchise, my view was (and still is) anyone but First.

Oh well I don't have to worry about the big railway anymore, well not for much longer, I'm not saying when I retire(d) as I do wish to stay a bit hidden.
I've read this forum for many years, very sorry it took so long to say Hi.

Note: Whilst I say "play" trains on a heritage line, it is as my pleasure, not for gain (as in Pounds shillings and pence)
as a train is just as dangerous at 1.25 mph as at 125mph, and Heritage lines need to be treated  with as much respect as the main line.      DS
