16  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / FGW to introduce bartering for purchasing rail tickets on: March 06, 2024, 15:51:32
OK, this is hysterical historical. It came up on my FB timeline from 9 years ago!

FGW (First Great Western) to no longer accept money when purchasing rail tickets!

Having photed her at Basingstoke, I followed the tour to Salisbury. So, my takes on the subject.....

18  Sideshoots - associated subjects / News, Help and Assistance / Re: Passenger flow data - ticketed journeys between stations on: February 05, 2024, 16:23:01
I guess figures will now be distorted with the growth in split ticketing. It would be interesting to see figures of journeys into the likes of Didcot, Pewsey and Castle Cary.

Regarding the LNER» (London North Eastern Railway - about) twitter thread, someone's remarked that water ingress at the windows is causing issues as it's able to travel to where it can cause galvanic corrosion. LNER's trains run in a somewhat salt-rich environment, and GWR (Great Western Railway)'s even more so, and this cannot help either.

Ah, but don't forget, both Hitachi and GWR have assured us that their IETs (Intercity Express Train) are 'Dawlish proof'  Wink

I'd vote for the 24 hour clock

agreed

21  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: Axle counter failures at Sherborne on: February 01, 2024, 21:06:26
... I can no longer rely on the rail service on the West of England line. Strikes, landslips, basic maintenance failures...

Today's (1st February 2024) failures on the line between Salisbury and Exeter include.....
- train fault (horn inoperable);
- Points failure at Axminster;
- Axle counter failure at Sherborne;
- services caped short of destination.

Not good!
22  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Axle counter failures at Sherborne on: February 01, 2024, 20:02:23
Barely a day goes by without a report of axle counter failures in the Sherborne area.

Network Rail are clearly not concerned about the likelihood of Down trains subsequently arriving at Exeter some 40 minutes late!

he asked me why lightly loaded trains could not stop at level crossings so that cars could have priority

Was this a pre-cursor to the Hierarchy of users in the latest update of the Highway Code (;

They do (or rather did, in this case) sometimes
24  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: Car Parking, APCOA (in this case, Oriental Road, Woking) - a cautionary tale on: February 01, 2024, 12:26:34
I'd disagree - surely 12am is midnight? And therefore 12pm is midday.

Not so technically.  See here

12:00pm - Midnight
Midnight - 12:00pm

[pedant mode]
Aaaaarrggggghhh!
There is no such time as 12pm!
They use Midnight correctly, but 12pm means '12 hours after midday', which, in my world means 'Midnight'

Slightly unusual sight at Westbury........

and at Castle Cary or as a Spanish (I presume) lady on my train to Cary called it, 'Kastelle Carig'
27  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: Car Parking, APCOA (in this case, Oriental Road, Woking) - a cautionary tale on: January 28, 2024, 22:56:30
... A number had the same problem. ...

I have learned over the weekend that I am far from the only one - sounds like APCOA (Car parking company used at GWR (Great Western Railway) - controlled stations in the area) or the agents they use may have a systemic problem, but be putting the onus on their customers rather than admitting to the issues.   Is it just me, or does that remind others too of another organisation that's in the news at the moment; the problems of APCOA users, mind you, are many orders of magnitude less.

Sounds like a job for BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page)'s Watchdog team   Shocked

Alterations to services between London Paddington and Newbury via Reading

Alterations to services between London Paddington and Didcot Parkway via Reading

Apologies for going off on a tangent...... this always amuses me. How else can you get from London Paddington to Newbury or Didcot without going through Reading?  Similarly, the CIS (Customer Information System) at Exeter St Davids..... "Exmouth via Exeter Central"   Huh
29  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Problems with IET trains from April 2021 on: January 24, 2024, 09:10:17
Answering my own question.  Looking at Realtime Trains it was 166 207 as far as Exeter St Davids and then 150 248 forward from there.   Thinking about it, are turbos cleared on the main line past Newton Abbot?

Yes
30  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: Landslip Crewkerne Tunnel on: January 05, 2024, 06:52:08
Fully emergency timetable running today (Tuesday, 12th) between Axminster and Exeter St Davids
Got there in the end, the day before normal service resumes!  Roll Eyes

Units available at Exeter, but SWR» (South Western Railway - about) apparently not implementing their emergency timetable today, so commuters into Exeter badly let down again!
