All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Demand Responsive Bus Services in North Somerset

I travelled with DRT to Bristol airport...and was dropped and picked up at the Airport Tavern on the A38. For anyone reasonably fit and in good weather the 15-20 minute walk to the the terminal would be OK. However if you had a suitcase or a family it would be totally impractical. The second time I was taken into the airport and back out again and finally dropped on the painted BUS STOP on the top road adjoining the terminal. Opposite, was a clear warning on the sign about 200 yards from the terminal, saying you would be fined £100 if you stop here ! Whether that was applied to the DRT bus, I have no idea. Anyway I wrote to Westlink and the airport pointing out the impracticality of these arrangements, and metaphorically knocked some heads together. I am pleased to say I have now had an email to say that Westlink DRT have now been given permission to use Stand 24 in the airport bus station. However the not inconsiderable difficulty of getting UP to the terminal from the airport bus station still needs to be addressed. I saw an elderly couple get off a Falcon coach having come up from Pymouth laden with suitcases. The way up to the terminal is two slopes and three flights of steps...they had to ring for a taxi to take them up for the terminal !!! Surely, with the profits Bristol airport make, someone could be employed with one of the golf type buggies to transfer passengers and their luggage between the airport bus station and terminal......

All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Inaugural run of new service X10 connecting Clevedon, Portishead and Cribbs

I was on the first run out of Portishead this morning, waiting along with 20 others at the Combe Road bus stop in Portishead. A roving Radio Bristol reporter was in attendance and created a jolly mood on the first jam packed single decker service that took 20 minutes instead of at least 4 hours there and back, that residents have had to endure for the last 3 years. A 3000+ name petition was presented for North Somerset and we now have 3 round trips a day giving 2 hours at Cribbs Causeway with 4 on Saturdays. It was a shame we didn't have a TV crew on board as the 95% passengers were over 65 and using their ENCTS▸ passes and serenaded the driver with a rip roaring version of 'the wheels on the bus go round and round'. I hope the service utilises a double decker, and as the song says 'all day long' as it soon gets upgraded to an hourly service.

All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture Overseas / Tarjeta Dorada in Spain

For those of you over 60, can I recommend this Spanish rail pass. I bought mine in Vigo after travelling up from Porto and it cost 6 euros and gives you up to 50% off RENFE▸ fares for a whole year. All that is needed is the sight of your passport and it can be renewed online. I recouped the cost of the card on the onward journey to A Coruna and over the next 8 days saved over £50 in rail fares!
