947  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Signalling & Services Between Paddington & Reading Not Fit For Purpose on: May 03, 2016, 12:52:57
The Chiltern Line to Paddington is full with no additional paths in the peaks, so would be used only in extreme emergency - and until the single line Ruislip/Paddington is dualled, that can only cope with 2tph each way at a max in any case.

... and the whole route from South Ruislip to Old Oak Common is threatened by HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) surface work (vent/access shafts etc.) even though HS2 will be tunnelled beneath it.

When services commence from Oxford (Central) to Marylebone, much of the potential traffic will be abstraction from the London journeys of people from Oxford and to the north and west thereof; it's likely that (for a while, anyway) overall capacity on Oxford - London may exceed demand.   So it makes logical sense for the incumbent that will be facing competition (GWR (Great Western Railway)) to take steps to reduce the number of people transferring to the new service.   Lower price ticketing (through the advance mechanism, where people cannot switch route and get the lowest cost deal available) seems like a commercially sensible route to go in the short term.

Also when CH services start from Oxford ('Central'), GWR will have to share their walk-up/season  OXF» (Oxford - next trains)-LON revenue with the new operator.  Already some of it goes to XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) and SWT (South West Trains).  With advance tickets 100% of the fare goes to GWR.

Worry ye not BNM - you are in good company - my wife for one is a life-long republican!
And being a loyal subject of the Crown in this free and democratic society which is ours - I would defend with my life your right to express your desire to advocate a republic.

Someone better than me has said that before - and much better too!

Quote
Evelyn Beatrice Hall (28 September 1868 ^ 13 April 1956), who wrote under the pseudonym S. G. Tallentyre, was an English writer best known for her biography of Voltaire entitled The Life of Voltaire, first published in 1903. She also wrote The Friends of Voltaire, which she completed in 1906.
In The Friends of Voltaire, Hall wrote the phrase: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" (which is often misattributed to Voltaire himself) as an illustration of Voltaire's beliefs. Hall's quotation is often cited to describe the principle of freedom of speech.

If I recall correctly, Charles II had Cromwell beheaded post mortem for the act of topping his dad.

Oh, and belated happy XCth birthday E II R, BTW (by the way)!

I love Brunel's broad gauge gap on the main lines to the right.

Would be nice to get step free access to just platform 4 (and 5!) at Cholsey via upper carpark ramp. Can't see any other step free capability there soon.
952  All across the Great Western territory / Who's who on Western railways / Re: Gerry Barney and the double arrow logo on: March 31, 2016, 14:21:28
The Sealink house flag was the reverse of the BR (British Rail(ways)) logo to mimic nautical convention but as the first photograph on the linked wiki's page shows, two ships with the logo either way depending on their direction. When running from left to right, their flag is reversed ("flag-pole" on the right) - and looks just like the BR flag!
953  All across the Great Western territory / Who's who on Western railways / Re: Gerry Barney and the double arrow logo on: March 31, 2016, 11:06:27
The pictures in the article must show the very first ships' funnels - or else they are photo mock-ups, because the British Rail shipping fleet had the symbol reversed to reflect nautical right-hand running.
954  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture Overseas / Re: Isle of Man Snaefell Mountain Tram Runaway 30 March 2016 on: March 31, 2016, 10:51:31
It looks to have got more than halfway around the mountain section - probably a kilometre or so and a drop at that point of about 100m. Usual practice that I observed on this right-hand running railway was to stop the incoming service short of the summit headshunt - with its peculiar triangular slide-rail point to await the departure of the preceding down train.  I can imagine that an improperly set hand brake and a strong gust of wind - not unknown  phenomenon at the top of the mountain - would see it roll, and the gradient starts immediately. I think that there is no Fell rail on the up line on the mountain section after Bungalow.  If there had been, it would have got much further and with considerably more energy.  Shame to see such a beautiful vehicle totally wrecked.

I foresee a change to the primitive layout at the summit to include an arriving catch point.

If you buy a ticket from Kemble to Cholsey and make use of an easement in the routing guide that allows you to travel via Reading....... Thus you would need just need a reading to london season.

I do not believe that would be kosher as your whole journey has a ticketing gap. And I don't mean discovery - I mean intent - when your whole journey is examined.

Completed and declared that I hold a PTS (Personal Track Safety) (Personal Track Safety) Certificate from my heritage railway on which I volunteer and work trackside, as this will have influenced my answers.
I am a great respecter of crossings. Training includes the poor human perception of train approach speeds and an overestimation as to the amount of noise they make on approach.

Many years ago when working in Northern Ontario, Summer Beaver always struck me as an inviting locale. Always had to settle for more mundane destinations, unfortunately.
