There is definitely room for some healthy discussion on DOO (Driver-Only Operation (that is, trains which operate without carrying a guard)) on this thread (it’s clearly not perfect in all situations, which will no doubt be improved on).

I do question some of the comments made on these threads at times though. Having read the article (still available in quotes above) the editor and the metro itself don’t seem to be making any outlandish comments.  Huh

07:33 Westbury to Swindon due 08:15 will no longer call at Melksham.
It has been delayed at Trowbridge and is now 25 minutes late.
This is due to a points failure.

That's 2 out of 3 peak trains gone this morning.

Someone's having trouble organising a pissup in a brewery!

This is due to animals on the railway.

Heading that way tomorrow so can hopefully grab some pics.

Maybe worth a new thread for discussion of the new “Swindon depot”?

The train, the 10:35 from Paddington to Plymouth - diverted via Swindon due to Newbury works - came to a stand just after Chippenham shortly before 12 noon.  Two hours later it has just started moving back towards Chippenham as 5C78.  I am not sure what happened to the passengers.  I doubt it was really terminated at Swindon as it departed, as normal, as 1C78 on time.

10:35 London Paddington to Plymouth due 14:28

10:35 London Paddington to Plymouth due 14:28 was terminated at Swindon.

It will no longer call at Westbury, Castle Cary, Taunton, Tiverton Parkway, Exeter St Davids, Newton Abbot, Totnes and Plymouth.

This is due to a fault on this train.

Looks like they were returned to Chippenham where the 12:30 Paddington to Penzance called additionally to pick them up.

Looks like GWR (Great Western Railway)'S inability to manage their Annual Leave schedule is causing problems again today

It has nothing to do with an ability to manage annual leave. It's all down to the perfectly normal and valid situation whereby the entire railway workforce cannot be compelled to come to work on a Sunday. It's the Lord's day! Woe betide anyone who dares attempting to force staff to give up going to church. Strike, strike, strike! So if staff cannot be bribed into coming in with massive overtime payments then everything falls apart. Ain't railways brilliant.

Last time I checked it wasn’t Sunday...  Huh

2M17 2008 Swindon - Westbury (GW (Great Western)) seems to have been cancelled at Chippenham this evening.

A broken down train at Trowbridge trapping a freight train on the Melksham line.

38  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Infrastructure problems in Thames Valley causing disruption elsewhere - ongoing, since Oct 2014 on: July 23, 2018, 16:48:27
Indeed:

Due to a speed restriction because of high track temperatures at Oxford trains have to run at reduced speed on all lines.
Impact: Train services running through this station may be delayed by up to 15 minutes. Disruption is expected until 18:00 23/07.

Isn’t this the age old problem of it being fresh track layed over the last couple of weeks? Always a pain regardless.

42  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Wetherspoon pub chain shuts its social media accounts - any rail lessons here? on: April 16, 2018, 14:35:30
I don’t think it’s anything for the rail industry to consider.

In the case of weatherspoons any advertising is done on premise with the magazines or promotions at the bar. If you have an issue it can be resolved by staff there and then generally.

For the rail industry it’s a different ball game. You could be on a train, at a station, needing a quick answer before starting a journey and social media, such as twitter, can be effective for that.

44  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / Re: First turbo to Weymouth? on: March 22, 2018, 13:19:29
Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere but I think its worth noting that a more detailed explanation has been posted on JourneyCheck entries with missed stops on Turbos.

I’m all for more detailed explanations, even if they are a bit late.

14:38 Westbury to Bristol Parkway due 15:44
14:38 Westbury to Bristol Parkway due 15:44 will no longer call at Avoncliff.
This is due to a fault on this train.
Additional Information
To increase capacity on our Weymouth and Southampton services we are introducing 3 coach Turbo trains. Turbo trains require the fitting of local door controls to allow them to stop at stations with very short platforms. A Turbo train not fitted with these controls cannot call at Avoncliff, Dilton Marsh, Chetnole or Thornford.

Unfortunately it has taken longer than expected to fit the controls and the Turbo train being used on this service today has yet to be fitted.

If you at one of the stations the train is unable to call at please use the help point or contact National Rail Enquiries on 03457 48 49 50 and we will arrange for an additional stop on another train, or alternative road transport if another train cannot be stopped within a reasonable time.

We would like to apologise for the difficulties we know this has caused to your journeys recently.
