That it is what the bio of the new Bristol Beacon Twitter profile says - a name that feels like a place of ?warmth, light and welcome?. It?s a bit like the name of a church, isn?t it? Or a community centre, or a school.

Quite what rookie taxi drivers and out-of-towners with fat satnav fingers will do when they rock up to a Van Morrison concert at the village hall in Peasedown remains to be seen. Perhaps it?s a business opportunity for them, and they can start putting on shows of their own.

I wouldn't be surprised if people call it either "Beacon Hall" or "The Beacon" rather than "Bristol Beacon".
1187  All across the Great Western territory / Media about railways, and other means of transport / Re: lack of rail scenes in modern day films on: September 24, 2020, 12:44:43
Films are shot in all sorts of risky locations or their replicas: roads, factories, battlefields, race circuits, intergalactic space battles where dangerous extraterrestrials shoot people with lasers. If films are no longer including scenes with railways, it's probably because writers are no longer writing such scenes.

Might be camel racing. Or the jockey could even be a mahout. A safari park with giraffe rides?

They've recognized the futility of the pedestrian/cyclist split in the width available. Good!

You can wind past the first 53 minutes without missing anything; the poem starts just after 1hr 11mins.
Thanks. My son's studying graphic design etc and he's just been occupied analysing the video of the poem! My analysis is much shorter: needs subtitles. Most people have been captured very clearly but one is really quite muddy.

Boom tish!

There are numerous references to a poem written for the occasion by Vanessa Kisuule but not a copy of the poem or recording of her speech to be found, which is annoying.

The stable door analogy isn't entirely appropriate, because this stable is always full of horses. Equally, it always has many doors.
1193  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Access to Ashley Down Rail Station Engagement Survey on: September 22, 2020, 16:27:15
YTL? !!! Presumably this means they were trying to persuade GWR (Great Western Railway) to run this service? Or are everyone's favourite Malaysian conglomerate now in the train business as well as water and arenals?
1194  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Railway bridges struck by road vehicles - merged topic, ongoing discussion on: September 22, 2020, 15:04:02
I like the provision of seating.

A couple of comments, one frivolous, others less so. To get the frivolous one out of the way: Will there really be IETs (Intercity Express Train) calling at this station as the video suggests?!

And the others:
Opening in 2023 seems optimistic compared to the experience of other local stations.
They mention services to Henbury but nothing to Parkway. If this is correct, this will substantially reduce the usefulness of the station.
The design includes lifts for the footbridge rather than ramps. I take the point that this is less visually intrusive and also takes less platform space, but it will presumably incur increased maintenance costs. And I'm mildly surprised it's acceptable to have lifts on an unstaffed station.
1196  All across the Great Western territory / Looking forward - after Coronavirus to 2045 / Re: Beyond current Emergency Measures - where will we be on 21st September? on: September 20, 2020, 14:43:26
Wouldn't a simple, interim answer to the variable season ticket issue be to calculate a price per day. If you make an assumption that a season ticket is used 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year, then just divide the annual price by 500 to come up with per-trip price. Up to individual travellers ? and their employers of course ? if they use that five days a week every week, alternate weeks, a couple of days a week, or whatever. It's far from perfect but it's a rough and quick way of introducing flexible bulk-user fares.

I spy a railway in one phase of the construction!  Cheesy

By analogy with the video you posted elsewhere of Ghent, it seems safe to say "Design for speed and you get speed."

Cheltenham?  Cheesy
1200  Sideshoots - associated subjects / News, Help and Assistance / Re: When does a thread become stale? on: September 17, 2020, 11:38:24
Where a thread is what might be termed 'informational' I think it's more appropriate to add to a pre-existing thread, however old, rather than start a new one. Red Squirrel's example of 'Portishead reopening' is a good example. Where it's a thread like 'Where was I last Sunday' then it's probably better to start your own thread. And then there are the ongoing drip-feed threads such as 'IET (Intercity Express Train) experiences'.

Put simply ? and this is the point, I suppose, of the 120 day warning ? 'If I post this here, is anyone likely to read it and respond to it?'
