Interesting and, yes, sobering, on many levels.

(Overall, incidentally, we felt we got what we paid for - the bus up to Birmingham smelt of wee, and on the return leg the driver seemed to be close to road rage at times. Next time we'll pay the extra.)
Only road rage though. Apparently one of my son's friends went by coach to Coventry recently and on the return journey, the driver got into an argument with two passengers, or would-be passengers, which developed into a physical fight. Police arrived and arrested the driver. The coach was somewhat delayed...

We don't know exactly what was broadcast, or prevented from being broadcast, nor do we know it was done by Russian agents. But we do know that Russian agents don't have to be based in Russia, just as eg Ukrainian drones attacking Moscow aren't launched from Ukraine, so I don't the location is implied.

Westbury or Uffington? They are separate horses.

A different aspect is raised in a Graudian article about shoplifting:
Quote
She captures the problem: automation has led to lawlessness to which there is no ready solution in the justice system. And it’s not just shops where this is happening. Slowly, gradually, we are removing “secondary social control mechanisms” – shop staff, train ticket collectors, park keepers and bus conductors. Part of their job – an overlooked fact – was to maintain order. A bigger social problem may be looming.

Northern re-records 34 mispronounced station names

Glad Euxton got rerecorded. Made to sound as Euston would be pronounced, and every local at Preston station groaned and winced. It's Ecks-t'n ! (where ' is a neutral 'e').
What linguists call 'schwa'. 'Neutral e' is a more accessible description.  Smiley

Russian hackers are being blamed.
Quote
Polish intelligence services are investigating a hacking attack on the country's railways, Polish media say.

Hackers broke into railway frequencies to disrupt traffic in the north-west of the country overnight, the Polish Press Agency (PAP) reported on Saturday.

The signals were interspersed with recording of Russia's national anthem and a speech by President Vladimir Putin, the report says.

27  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Replacing Swindon bus station on: August 17, 2023, 11:58:59
I've only once in my life used Swindon bus station. That happened to be a rainy Monday this June. It struck me as being very like bus stations I remember from the 1970s, and that is in no way a compliment. I didn't pay any attention to the opening hours of the toilet, because that also would presumably be like a public toilet of the 1970s, with pools of pee and piles of poo on the floor, pages ripped out of pornographic magazines, and dodgy geezers standing round with dubious intentions.

Besides, I was on my way to catch a train, where all would be much more pleasant. On which, I wouldn't say the two stations were especially close now, nor is the train station well signposted from the bus station. I'm not sure about the other way.

In short, if they're going to knock it down, that's good.

(Oh, and there were lots of good things about the 1970s, but bus stations were not among them.)
28  Journey by Journey / Chiltern Railways services / Re: Warwick Station accessibility improvements: they've found a thing in the pit. on: August 17, 2023, 09:56:29
I was going to say that things you can't imagine at the time, will nevertheless be invented and installed; but in fact, the original station was built only one year before the first Otis "safety passenger elevator" in New York, so by 1894 it was definitely a known thing.
29  Journey by Journey / Chiltern Railways services / Re: Warwick Station accessibility improvements: they've found a thing in the pit. on: August 16, 2023, 18:47:56
I suppose there's a lesson here about making and keeping records even when you can see no use for them.

Remember when they simplified rail fares, so that no-one was confused and everyone could easily buy the right ticket? https://youtu.be/XGyhDjQCLkY
I don't remember that at all – but haven't adverts changed a lot! And museums, come to that.
