22:37 London Paddington to Bristol Parkway due 00:11
23:09 Swindon to Cheltenham Spa due 00:13

I think the cancellations on the Golden Valley are partially due to a defective rail between Kemble and Swindon

It is shortage of train crew according to Journycheck. The defective rail is causing delays of up to 10 minutes.

Quite a few shortforms again today, but of all the services to choose, this one on a Friday has to be one of the most brainless;

19:04 London Paddington to Plymouth due 22:23

Facilities on the 19:04 London Paddington to Plymouth due 22:23.
Will be formed of 5 coaches instead of 9.

RTT» (Real Time Trains - website) shows that the 1904 set is currently working 1C78 1104 Pad - Ply. Tiger trains is showing this as having 9 coaches.

(Assuming the diagram remains as 1C78, 1A90, 1C94).

Here's a close-up of the GWR (Great Western Railway) fallen on 800306, which also includes details of where they worked and where they are buried/remembered.

Did it stop at Taplow, Cliveden being the home of the Astor family?

It stopped only at Reading and Exeter. It did the same thing as it came straight back to Royal Oak as ECS (Empty Coaching Stock) (5Z20), for some reason. (Dropping off railway staff?).

I just caught it leaving Reading P11 at 14:48, and was puzzled as to what this funny-looking "not for public use" train was (from too far to see the details). Two things were odd: some red signs or symbols high up on the side of each carriage, and a wider silver-white stripe along the waist (possibly above the usual narrow one). The signs would make sense for this special, but what was that stripe about (assuming I didn't imagine it)? I've not found any clear side-on pictures of it (as usual).

I suspect you saw 800306?

Information posted elsewhere suggests both trains entered the depot line from the Leeds direction, first the HST (High Speed Train) as 5D24, followed by the IET (Intercity Express Train) as 5D29.

The up sleeper failed near Ivybridge last night and had to be rescued by the Rail Head Treatment train.  Carriages were taken back to Plymouth and passengers moved to an IET (Intercity Express Train).  Arrival in London was just over two hours late.

The failed sleeper has been returned to Reading as 5Z70, hauled by 2 back-to-back class 43 power cars.

12:20 Westbury to Swindon due 13:02
13:29 Swindon to Westbury due 14:10
13:29 Swindon to Westbury due 14:10 will be cancelled.
This is due to a problem currently under investigation.

So that's 4 out of 18 cancelled so far today - 77% service running, versus 95% plus which would seem to be a low target.  And reliability is what passengers want above everyone else ...

Under investigation ?     You only have to look at another part of Journey Check to see that it was due to "Ambulance services attending".

From RTT» (Real Time Trains - website) https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/C22878/2019/09/16/advanced:
Quote
This service was cancelled throughout due to an unexpected number of passengers joining/alighting the service (RB).
