301  Sideshoots - associated subjects / Heritage railway lines, Railtours, other rail based attractions / Re: Swindon prepares to mark railway works 175th anniversary - Western Daily Press on: November 10, 2015, 17:14:30
The diesel railmotor has left today. Lode Star was still there earlier but is due to leave tonight apparently.
I have been told that City of Truro and King George V are due to arrive tomorrow.

Does anyone know specific days/times when moves are happening. Although the museum is closed it should be possible to view any activity from outside. Thanks.

Interesting to look at RTT» (Real Time Trains - website) which describes it as diesel hauled, top speed 95 mph, and unadvertised.  I think three pinches of salt are required!
RTT doesn't have "steam" in it's vocabulary! Also the first part of the outward leg (Slough - to Westbury) was diesel-hauled (95mph limit), whereas Britannia is limited to 75mph.

Steam tour currently en route to Kingswear via Westbury. No diesel assistance apparently.

This BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) documentary includes the development of the APT (Advanced Passenger Train) and HST (High Speed Train) from 34mins. Very interesting programme with lots of nostalgic footage from the British Rail film unit.

BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page)'s take on the RAIB (Rail Accident Investigation Branch) report:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-wiltshire-34583242

Quote
Safety equipment which was turned off allowing a steam train to pass a red signal had been turned off on previous occasions, a report has shown.

The train passed a signal near Royal Wootton Bassett in March and ended up across a junction.

A Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) report showed an Automatic Warning System (AWS (Automatic Warning System)) brake demand was by-passed by the train's crew.

The report said it was not the only occasion when it had been by-passed.

The driver of the Tangmere locomotive ignored two AWS warnings, the report showed.

He fully applied the brakes when he saw the red signal but there was insufficient distance to bring the train to a halt.

The report found the First Great Western service from Swansea to London Paddington had "fortunately" already passed through the junction before the stream train came to a halt.

The steam train was operated as a charter service by the West Coast Railway Company Ltd (WCRC).

The editor of Rail magazine, Nigel Harris, said: "Do not underestimate how serious this was. We were a heartbeat from absolute catastrophe.

"Because the driver missed the red signal his train stopped across the junction.

"No more than a minute before that a First Great Western express heading for London was occupying that junction at nearly 100 mph."

The RAIB said it was continuing to investigate the incident and "the extent of the practice" of by-passing the AWS.

The competence of the train crew involved, and how this was managed by WCRC, will also be investigated.

You mentioned ACoRP (Association of Community Rail Partnerships), special. Was that linked to the ACoRP awards in Torquay the previous day?

I'm told that HST (High Speed Train) designer Sir Kenneth Grange is on board the special.

About time a Class 43 power car (the exterior design being his) was named after him.

Quite agree - there's a picture of him on the special on the UK (United Kingdom) HST Enthusiast Facebook page.

The HST (High Speed Train) worked 1A81 Penzance - Paddington, so the two would have met at Plymouth on platforms 7 and 8!

Yes, that's correct.

If anyone wonders what a Torquay to Okehampton service was doing at Plymouth, let me tell you it ran via Bere Alston.

The Okehampton to Exeter St Davids was even more oddly routed.

Sorry if off topic but this came to mind..!
