So what would have been the most direct route from Cardiff to Holyhead prior to the 'reduction to a skeleton'?

Possibly via Merthyr Tydfil then the Mid-Wales line to Moat Lane Junction. Change there for the  Cambrian Coast route to Afon Wen, then to Bangor and Holyhead?

May be more direct on the map but I suspect it would take more than 5 hours. At least nowadays no changes are necessary.

38  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: Old April fool, or actual proposal? on: July 10, 2019, 22:20:56
It was known as the Interoceanic Ship Railway and was proposed for construction across Mexico in the days before the Panama Canal was built.

There was an article about the proposal in the Railway Magazine for May 2008.

I used to think Brightside was inappropriate for the gloomiest, most heavily industrialised part of Sheffield.

Quite apart from the loss of the useful "A to Z"s - two other questions occur to me-

1 - Why are they using a cartoon Stephen Fry in this campaign?

He's the patron of a relevant charity:

Just checked today’s list and just two units are restricted to diesel out of the entire 800 and 802 fleet.  They are 800313 and 800320.

Just to say that last Saturday I travelled on 800320 on the 1226 from Cardiff (started at Swansea) as far as Swindon and I'm practically certain that it ran on electric power from Bristol Parkway onwards.

What is that weird object on the platform level with the front of the train?

I took it to be a species of refreshment trolley (for use on platforms).

Lincoln Central as I still call it.
