Unfortuneatly when they do provide cycling infrastructure, all too often the standard is that low as to be almost unusable. I get the impression that designing for cyclists and pedestrians is not something that figures highly in a highway engineers education and training.

A happy story is always welcome. No reported "I'm not moving my push chair/shopping trolley", the rear end of horse probably concentrates minds!

Thanks, interesting. If you take the OXF» (Oxford - next trains) - PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains) for £5.00 and amend it to RDG(resolve) - PAD the price is £21.00 at the same time. So do you save by buying a ticket to Oxford but get on at Reading?

Can't really imagine Brunel surviving today's administrative and managerial environment.

1207  Journey by Journey / Thames Valley Branches / Re: Another new station on the Reading-Basingstoke line? on: January 13, 2020, 07:19:44
The original proposal was in 2016. WBC applied for funding to MHCLG under the Garden Village scheme, applications for which closed Aug 18. The member for Wokingham was initially enthusiastic and then became less so, possibly when it become obvious that a significant part of the land was owned by the then member for Newbury.

The original proposal details are still on the WBC web site. There was also a Transport Review done by Phil Jones Associates, funded by the Thames Valley LEP» (Local Enterprise Partnership - about), which is possibly on the WBC web site http://www.wokingham.gov.uk/EasySiteWeb/GatewayLink.aspx?alId=422580 but currently times out.

The Berkshire Live report doesn't seem to add much new to the original report, so could be seen as a rehash of old news.. 15,000 houses equate to a potential population of 36,000 people, quite a village. The other proposal raised at the same time was more housing round Twyford/Ruscombe, which I believe is happening.

On Theale, when I last went to Newbury there is a considerable amount of "cut up" land west of Theale station next to the lake, so wasn't quite sure what that was about.
1208  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Station seating design competition on: January 12, 2020, 08:35:42
I hope whatever appears will be better than the current (?) pierced bent metal design. This is a long way down with no arm rests to support when you have arthritic knees. I normally end up "sitting" on the curved top of the back rest, facing backwards not with my feet on the seat.
1209  All across the Great Western territory / Active travel: Cyclists and walkers, including how the railways deal with them / Re: Bristol-Bath Railway Path improvement work on: January 12, 2020, 08:29:58
Odd that the word security doesn't obviously appear after various reports of attacks on cyclists.

Unfortunately there a proportion of cyclists who can't get it into their heads that a shared path is not where you train for the Tour de France. Not helped by measuring distance in time, with no obvious difference between cycle only and shared paths.

Slightly OT. Cycled the Hanson Way (NCN 5, Didcot to Newbury) yesterday. The section that runs parallel to the railway from Sandford Lock lane to the Cowley branch bridge has been tarmaced, very useful.

HS3. I am losing track was that the line from the former SoS constituency to central London, or was that CrossRail2

Would prefer city, with a small c so it didn't imply just the City of London.

The universal problem that we have too much stuff, cars don't fit into parking spaces, luggage doesn't fit into Voyagers, etc.

We'll have to see what happens under new management; DfT» (Department for Transport - about) or TOC (Train Operating Company).

Not another aircraft carrier! Cut in the number of senior staff officers would save a lot, see https://www.amazon.co.uk/Losing-Small-Wars-Military-Afghanistan/dp/0300182740 for a fairly scathing critique.
1215  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: IET Driver Only Operation - bit strange on: January 08, 2020, 07:07:59
I have got on a Driver Only train at Paddington, and then we all had to get off because there was no onboard CIS (Customer Information System). Walk through staff said that Driver Only train cannot operate without onboard CIS. Inconsistency somewhere?
