226  Journey by Journey / North Downs Line / Re: Reading: Work on 106-year-old bridge to disrupt traffic on: March 29, 2023, 07:05:01
Well the paint is on one half of the bridge. I wonder how long before it is "tagged".
227  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The West - but NOT trains in the West / Re: Which came first - the cream or the jam? on: March 27, 2023, 07:17:16
Looking again at the pictures, it appears to be whipped 'pseudo' cream, and not proper clotted cream.

Presumably involving the gas that the government wants to discourage the "yoof" from using.
228  Journey by Journey / Transport for London / Re: Giving each overground line a separate name and colour on: March 27, 2023, 07:11:56
As for colours – this will have to be very carefully thought out to keep them distinct. Probably some lines will have to be a combination of colours (eg red outline with blue infill). It's still going to get messy at different scales. And as a colourblind friend says, "Will it work in greyscale?"

I have problems differentiating the existing range of colours, so they are going to have to vary texture (dashed, filled, etc) as well for some of us to have a chance. Quite challenging with the pocket Tube map.

Low hanging power cables would probably more effective Smiley
230  All across the Great Western territory / Active travel: Cyclists and walkers, including how the railways deal with them / Re: On target for Net Zero? on: March 13, 2023, 17:14:18
Lovely, but I we won't see anything like that in this country in my life time or by 2050 (take your pick of which).
231  All across the Great Western territory / Active travel: Cyclists and walkers, including how the railways deal with them / On target for Net Zero? on: March 13, 2023, 10:17:03
Starting with £200 million knocked of the Active Travel budget

https://www.sustrans.org.uk/our-blog/news/2023/march/sustrans-responds-to-active-travel-funding-cuts-in-england/

Quote
"Promised Government targets of 50% of all journeys in English towns and cities being walked or cycled by 2030, and for the UK (United Kingdom) to be Net Zero by 2050, are made impossible by these cuts."

Is my understanding that Net Zero can be achieved by a flick of a switch on 31st December 2049 from the Government's messages. Presumably this will be reinforced by another freeze in fuel duty in the budget (after another rise in rail fares).

The local authorities have obviously got the message

Active Travel England rates councils' capability to deliver infrastructure — 94% fall in lowest three categories

https://road.cc/content/news/active-travel-england-rates-councils-299865

or if you want it in the governments own words

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/local-authority-active-travel-capability-ratings/local-authority-active-travel-capability-ratings-accessible-version

Can't say that West Sussex getting a big fat zero suprises me.

Obviously none of this flat playing field stuff (and my old legs don't perform will cycling uphill).

Cycles are not meant to be used on the pavement, but enforcement of this is rare.

Reason: https://news.npcc.police.uk/releases/support-for-police-discretion-when-responding-to-people-cycling-on-the-pavement

Which, in general, means because of lack of resources it generally is not enforced (except just before local government elections?)
234  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Chargeable extras - what should be paid for and not included? on: February 27, 2023, 07:03:25
As ever it is probably more important to get the basics right, before trying to fleece the passengers more.
235  All across the Great Western territory / Smoke and Mirrors / Re: Rolling stock arithmetic for May 2023 on: February 27, 2023, 06:55:37
Existing 158s being reverted to 2 car - Portsmouth - Cardiff no longer to be 5 car length.

236  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Just one working ticket machine at Swindon. What future? on: February 24, 2023, 06:53:40
The "new" ones with the big screens, as at Paddington, have all died at Reading. It did seem ironic to me that the previous generation ones are still working. As you say long queues, and for the ticket office windows.

You will have digital, and you will like it (while we save loads of money and keep jacking up the prices).

I am not sure Ukraine Railways would say, and Russian figures couldn't be trusted.

Plans to overcome the difference in gauge
Quote
The plans are to build the new high-speed link on the existing Warsaw-Lviv-Kyiv route, adapting it to the European gauge width of 1435 mm in order to carry trains moving at speeds of up to 250 kilometres per hour.
although I don't think it will be in time to materially affect the current conflict.

How about cuttings Twyford, Tring and Edge Hill come to mind.

This reminded me of the engravings of JC Bourne https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Cooke_Bourne who you could say recorded "The seven wonders of railways of the British Isles" in the Victorian era.
240  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Consultation - minimum service levels - to 15 May 2023 on: February 21, 2023, 06:52:44

Minimum service levels (MSLs (Miniature Stop Lights (foot crossing))▸ ) aim to limit the impacts of strike action on the lives and livelihoods of the public and to strike a balance between the ability of unions and their members to take strike action with the need for the wider public to be able to access key services during strikes.

Surely a good employer wouldn't need to be considering this sort of option.
