Sorry I have thrown the thread completely off track

... and what would they call it? Pudding Hill?

There is somewhere in Reading that I have always (?) known as Treacle Factory Hill.

Flood warning for Somerset coast at Portishead and Portbury Dock, seafront properties and Portbury Dock areas

Updated 2:49pm on 12 February 2024

This flood warning has been issued for the high tide on Tuesday morning. The forecast high water is at 9:45 AM on 13/02/2024 with a level of 7.94 mAODN with south easterly force 4 winds. Please note all tide times are in local time and refer to the high-water time at Avonmouth.

Areas most at risk include the coastline between Portishead Point and Avonmouth including Portishead Ashlands Nature Reserve and the Royal Portbury Dock. The flooding of property may occur one or two hours before and after the high tide time. Start acting on your flood plan if you have one and consider activating any property flood protection products you have.

This flood warning is not expected to be re-issued during this spring high-tide period. Drier weather is forecast for Monday but some showers again on Tuesday.

Our incident response staff are closing flood gates and checking defences. Please be careful along beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous.

This message will be updated by 2:00 PM on 13/02/2024, or as the situation changes.

Flood warning area: Coastline between Portishead Point and Avonmouth including Portishead Ashlands Nature Reserve and the Royal Portbury Dock.

I think I saw a clip of one running through Winchester recently, presumably from Eastleigh to Feltham?

I seem to remember there is a thread somewhere talking about the new developments and possibly new station on the eastern end of the Fareham - Eastleigh line. There is certainly a fair amount of housing being built south of the line between Fareham and Botley.

Really a good flow considering the Didcot Dance that has to be done to make these journeys.

Certainly busy on Saturday with Reading playing at Oxford, almost got trampled as the herd migrated between platforms.

Not many people tackled a daily 4+ hour commute.

It always amazed me the distance/time people did commute; Yarmouth (IoW) to Waterloo on the first ferry in the morning always springs to mind. Not sure whether they were hardy souls (bit nippy in winter) or earning a substantial salary.

now that so many people can make arrangements to work remotely

Maybe not for the Civil Service, whose management appraisal has been modified to query how many staff are in the office.

Could be problematical for my organisation who have downsized to a new head office (before the old one was demolished around them) although the head count has possibly increased.

Don't understand the two level crossings at Wokingham station, or Star Lane. Not sure the second image has any direct relevance to the story headline.

People have been trying to "sell" me Torquay for the last 70 years, and I still not convinced. So if this is all the French Riviera has to offer I'll spend my £26 elsewhere.

45  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Devon / Re: Damage to bridge on Barnstaple line - January 2024 on: January 24, 2024, 07:12:24
I believe that for all accommodation bridges, underpasses, level crossings, it is the railway's responsibility to maintain the infrastructure.  The duty will usually extend back to the original Act of Parliament under which the line was built.

It would be a good idea for NR» (Network Rail - home page) to buy-out the rights of landowners who no longer use bridges such as this, and demolish the structures, so that they no longer need maintenance.

I think this concept has not had an entirely positive reception in relation to historic railways assets. Demolition (or filling with concrete on unused routes) hasn't always found favour in the courts.
