I had assumed that the only National Rail station in the Uxbridge constituency was South Ruislip. But it seems that platforms 3, 4 and 5 (the Crossrail Elizabeth line platforms) at West Drayton are also in that constituency with Platforms 1 & 2 in John McDonnell's Hayes & Harlington constituency.

On several occasions I have seen people tap their paper tickets on the reader and wonder why the barrier doesn't open.

* The network railcard validity area map. Now that's a very shy animal - it's not easy to find a copy that's both from an authoritative source and at a scale that makes it useable.

There used to be a link from the homepage of the National Rail site to all the maps. This time I had to perform a search for it.
Seems to be viewable ok on a PC. I haven't tried to view it on a phone / tablet though.

But hang on a moment - what if our public transport system was treated as a network?  What if buses and trains talked to each other?

As in Thomas the Tank Engine?

I didn't see the underground toilets. These are the ones I used (minus the green fence). It's good to see a local council improving or increasing toilet facilities when many others have chosen to close them.

All the lovely new stuff out the front, and Weymouth Station remains a disappointment.    I didn't comment on it earlier today; I had simply drawn a deep breath yesterday, sadly noticed in unimproved from this thread 4 years ago.   However, SWR» (South Western Railway - about) asked me via a survey my opinion, so this is what I wrote.

Toilets need to be open.  For a big station, a member of staff would be useful. Once station closed (later in the day / my GWR (Great Western Railway) return via Yeovil) no sign saying "closed" on front, no screen showing departure, had to look at each platform to find the train from along the platform itself.   And this on a busy summer day at a seaside terminus with lots of people using your services

Not really helped for newcomers to rail being faced with a train with a scrolling screen labelled "Barnstaple" which was (of course) going to Swindon.

I have to agree with your comments. I was there on Saturday, went to find the loo, found there was none so went back to the train I had just got off and used the toilet on that. There was a sign suggesting I use toilets on the esplanade and having done that later in the day I can report that they are not exactly close to the station. But they are plentiful unisex cubicles in good condition.

And yes I found the front gate locked on my return too. I can't remember if there was a sign pointing to the side entrance. I just knew it was there.

Interesting to compare with buses. I don't remember bus doors ever being openable (or closable) by passengers. Always totally under the driver's control with not even a button to press.

Old enough to remember hopping on and off buses by way of the open platform at the back.  I suppose that does make me really old.

And I remember when bus drivers used to keep the front door open in summer to get a breeze going through the bus. Not possible now though  Sad

I took a long walk today along the Celandine Route. I had to make an unexpected diversion as part of the route is blocked by an HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) worksite and came across this. I would hope this is a visual deterrent but you never know.

This website will give you train times for your nearest station. I know it isn't quite what you were asking.
I have it saved on the home page of my phone.

But High Street Bank branch closures are not actually meeting the needs of customers.  Therefore they are not meeting the needs of the business.  Small businesses and others who need to bank cash now have to travel miles to do this.  I bank with one of the big four banks and I am fortunate that I have a branch within 3 miles, but the next nearest branches are 15 to 20 miles away.  There is much talk of banking hubs to provide for customers needs, but there are none anywhere I have been.  I can pay in a cheque using the app up to a certain value, but beyond that I need to find a branch.

For most banks, you can pay in cheques and cash and make withdrawals at your local post office.

If you click on your bank on that link, you should get a bit more detail.

Mr Hopwood said GWR (Great Western Railway) was also "looking at whether we can run some more trains from Oxford into London with Great Western using the Chiltern Railway route".

So would that be Paddington - West Ealing - Greenford - Chiltern line to Oxford?

My preference is quite boring really - numbers. Other cities use Line 1, Line 2 etc. German cities have U & S numbered routes.

Though the Overground will probably end up with named lines that some will detest and others cheer.

Incidentally I also read that even if the lines are renamed / numbered they will still keep the orange lines on the map, so won't be any easier to distinguish between them.
30  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture Overseas / Solar panels between the rails in Switzerland on: March 19, 2023, 01:29:39

Solar panels are being rolled out “like carpet” on railway tracks in Switzerland.

Swiss start-up Sun-Ways is installing panels near Buttes train station in the west of the country in May, pending sign-off from the Federal Office of Transport.

As the climate crisis demands that we speed up Europe’s energy transition, developers have been seeing new potential in unusual surfaces.

Roadsides, reservoirs and farms are all finding space for solar systems. And Germany’s Deutsche Bahn is also experimenting with adding solar cells to railway sleepers.

Continues....
