556  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: South West Railway Diversions via Westbury - Sunday 09 December 2018 on: December 09, 2018, 11:11:02
Quite common when diversions occur. I'm currently on 1015 Waterloo to Westbury.
Yes, but I don't remember them being booked to call, only to reverse.

The CIS (Customer Information System) systems are not acknowledging the Westbury stop today even though the journey planners show it and I was sold an advance fare on the service.

It's happened before and I have used it. In September 2015 (19th according to photo dates) I caught an SWT (South West Trains) service from Woking to Bath. The return journey involved an FGW (First Great Western) train to Westbury where I boarded the SWT train back to Woking. It was showing on journey planners although I do recall it was 20 - 30 minutes late and disappeared off the CIS screens shortly after it was due.

In a previous, more nomadic, period of my life, I did in fact sleep on the Circle Line, and still don't know where the depot I woke up in is.

Depot
The line's depot is at Hammersmith,[c] close to Hammersmith station, originally built by the Great Western Railway to be operated by the Metropolitan Railway when the joint Hammersmith & City Railway was electrified in the early 20th century.[53] Sidings at Barking, Farringdon and near High Street Kensington (known as Triangle Sidings) stable trains overnight

Those are the current locations you may have woken up in. I don't know if there were previously others.

They are surfacing at airports too in an attempt to cut down on the number of plastic bottles used and are being installed through the generosity of the water industry.

I've also used one at Gatwick South terminal, upstairs between the Granary Store and World Duty Free. You can also refill an empty bottle in any catering outlet.
Are there water fountains after security?
Yes, we have water fountains available after security in both terminals and all our restaurants and bars will fill bottles for free.

There are probably others. It's ridiculous how much some airports charge for a bottle of water. At WH Smith it is cheaper to buy a Daily Telegraph which comes with a free bottle of water! You can then throw away the newspaper (in the recycling bin of course).

Went to Guildford again on Sunday. The covers are off. It's a bottle refill point. When it's warm I often carry a re-usable bottle of water with me. I had not known until earlier this year that there were many national outlets that would refill with tap water without question. 560  Journey by Journey / Transport for London / The end of the routemaster? on: December 04, 2018, 22:51:07
TfL» (Transport for London - about) are reported to be cutting back the last remaining routemaster route to summertime only.

From the London Evening Standard
The historic Routemaster bus is approaching the end of the road after “secret” plans emerged to withdraw the last vehicles from daily service.

Transport for London wants to axe the daytime “heritage” service on route 15, which uses the 60-year-old buses between Trafalgar Square and Tower Gateway. Under the plans, the buses would appear only at weekends during the summer and on bank holidays.

“Stakeholders” were asked to comment, but there has been no public consultation. No details were published on TfL’s website.

Enthusiasts are dismayed that transport bosses and Mayor Sadiq Khan is prepared to kill off a “London icon”.

Andrew Morgan, chairman of the Routemaster Association, accused TfL of acting in a “secretive” way. He said: “We should be keeping them to attract tourists, but tourists don’t know about them. They are London’s biggest secret.”

Mr Morgan said leaving the Routemasters unused in a garage was the “worst thing you can do with an old vehicle”. He added: “They will get them out at the last minute and they will break down. From an operator’s point of view, it’s going to cost more.

“They have not repainted them in the last few years and they are looking very unloved and shabby. It’s obvious they are driving them into the ground. They don’t advertise them — there is no publicity anywhere.”

TfL recently spent £200,000 refurbishing four of the buses. Last year the Mayor said: “They promote London as a key tourist destination.” Two heritage routes, shortened versions of routes 9 and 15, were launched in 2005 when Routemasters were phased out by Ken Livingstone after 50 years of service. The 9 heritage route was axed in 2014. TfL says the proposal to cut the 15 heritage service comes alongside the Mayor’s proposed cuts to 33 bus routes in central London, and will save £800,000 a year.

Passengers today spoke of their sadness. City worker Gareth Mason, 29, said: “It’s part of the heritage of London and should be kept going. It makes visiting London special.”

Joaquim Pelassa, 18, a business student at King’s College, said the buses were a factor in choosing to study here. “Every time I see the buses they turn my head. It’s what you think of when you think of London. People love it.”

TfL said: “The heritage buses provide an attraction for tourists that celebrates London’s transport heritage, but use of the service is low.” A spokesman said restricting the service to times of peak demand would “improve emissions while helping to reduce congestion”.

Unfortunately, the train following was a GWR (Great Western Railway) Turbo which had to be disposed of

Which bin do you put that in? Can it be recycled?

However, for me, more likely is a conversion job by Vivarail.  After all, the sleeper timings could easily be kept with a 60mph D Train and they have promised their train interiors are very flexible to meet a TOC (Train Operating Company)'s requirements.   Wink

How many carriages, compartments & beds does the existing sleeper have? How many do you think could Vivarail offer if they were to do such a thing? How noisy are the D Trains?
563  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Infrastructure problems in Thames Valley causing disruption elsewhere - ongoing, since Oct 2014 on: November 30, 2018, 22:31:48
It seems the down main is closed in the affected section. I'm crawling along the relief on 1W02, at least since the Ealing area to Slough.

Yeah ... on 1B69.  17:45 off Paddington then crawl and wrong line.  Currently 12 minutes late and with a 5 minute 'connection' at Swindon for Melksham - arrive 18:43 leave 18:48.    Me thinks I may be stuck there until after 8 O'Clock ...

Yep ... missed by a few minutes ... especially irritating because the 18:48 sits as Westbury for 10 minutes, and is timed for 75 mph stock I believe, but running with 90 m.p.h. stock.   Wouldn't have got in the way of the Bristolian tonight as that's 10 minutes late too ...

If 5 minute connections at Swindon drop like flies ... perhaps it's time to allow longer there for connections.  Or time to make the incoming trains a bit more punctual  Grin

Just out of interest, what do you do Graham, when you have a lengthy wait for your next train? Find a pub? Watch a film? Play football with other passengers? something else?

Toronto / Niagara?

Gray Line is a North American Sightseeing bus company. The bus pictured shows Barnstaple as a probably incorrect destination. Having visited Niagara in about 1989 I remember lots of old London Routemasters as tour buses which had original London blinds although they had been mixed up - the destinations not matching the route numbers i.e. Route 105 which then ran from Heathrow airport to Shepherds Bush having an improbable destination of Old Coulsdon.

I use Chrome.

Diarised then!

I went to add the event to my Google Calendar, but Eventbrite had done it for me. Did I miss that function in the booking process?

Google calendar sometimes takes booking info from your Gmail and places it into the calendar. It's a bit hit and miss. For example I booked 2 flights for outward and return travel a few months ago. From my separate confirmation Gmails, the Eurowings flight details were placed in the calendar automatically but the British Airways one was not.

Luckily, I had the day off yesterday so didn't have to cope with the SWR» (South Western Railway - about) morning problems. Unfortunately I had already decided to go to Brighton from Dorking Deepdene. Multiple delays and cancellations on GWR (Great Western Railway) North Downs line due to a broken down train.  Sad

Oooooooooooooo's gunna pee for it?

Now if they could find a way to convert that waste to power.....
There have been trials and experiments before but I guess they couldn't be economically justified.
569  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Error when buying online at GWR.com on: November 19, 2018, 10:05:48
On three occasions I have recently booked tickets on my PC and after waiting, have received the following message on what should be the confirmation screen:

Quote
We've encountered problems during the payment of your tickets. Please try again, or contact us for further support.

On the first occasion I had already started re-inputting the details and was almost near the end when I heard an incoming email alert on my phone. This email showed my booking confirmation reference. On the next two occasions the same message was received and I waited for email confirmation, which I got.

This is a poor error message. I don't know what triggers it but I am sure that many people are unnecessarily paying twice.
570  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Network Rail to abolish station toilet charges in 2019 on: November 18, 2018, 21:47:24
About time. Hopefully this will put pressure on the TOCs (Train Operating Company) who charge at stations they manage.

Are there any stations where TOCs charge?
SWR» (South Western Railway - about)

Wimbledon
Guildford

There's probably others.

Wimbledon, Guildford and Clapham Junction no longer charge. At Wimbledon the turnstiles have been removed. At Guildford you now enter via an open gate next to the turnstile and at Clapham Junction the turnstile has been adjusted to be in an open position. (One of the bars removed perhaps?)
