I had a strange experience at Crawley Station today. I meant to put the return portion of my ticket to Bookham in the ticket barrier but without thinking I put my usual season ticket (which is for Bookham to London zones 1-6) in instead. The ticket went through and to my surprise when I picked it up, the barrier opened. Why? That ticket is not valid for that journey?

Further dates announced https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-45804454Staff on South Western Railway (SWR» ) are set to stage further walkouts in a long-running dispute over the role of guards on trains.
Rail union RMT▸ said the next strike would run from 00:01 BST on 23 October until 23:59 on 27 October, followed by further walkouts on consecutive Saturdays until 24 November.
It said SWR had "stalled" the talks process and failed to provide an offer.
The rail company accused the union of "needlessly disrupting" customers. Sigh. That will be more Saturdays where I hang around my local station for the replacement bus that doesn't show up or is half an hour late.

I often find with multi transport journey planners that they each have their own ideas about how to get to different places. I mostly use Google maps, Traveline South East and sometimes National Rail enquiries. Often I will take a journey that involves changing trains along a stretch of line where both trains call at all 3 stations (Leatherhead, Ashtead and Epsom) and whilst the planners might agree on both trains to catch, they will suggest changing at different stations.
Grahame - Traveline South East also offer a walking speed mode which may help. I usually select fast walking in normal circumstances and slow if I have a suitcase. This may give you more time for connections, though I suspect it will be clueless when it comes to the availability of lifts, escalators etc.

This one has already disappeared - When the old Metropolitan Line trains were stationery, you would often hear some machinery starting up underneath lasting maybe a minute or so then shutting down. I also remember it on the old Central Line trains.
A Google search suggests the noise came from a compressor.

From the Reading ChronicleBUS services in Newbury have been taken over by Reading Buses.
The Newbury & District operation in the Newbury and Thatcham area employs more than 600 staff. Reading Buses' interim head Tony Pettitt said the acquisition fitted well with the company's current expansion and would help strengthen services in West Berkshire. The interim chief executive officer said: "We are delighted to announce the acquisition of Newbury & District's operation in the Newbury and Thatcham area. "We have been looking at ways of strengthening and expanding our network and after the recent success with our Green Line and Thames Valley services to the east of Reading we realised we had a great opportunity on our own doorstep.
"We will be sorting out all the details and ensuring there is a smooth transition so that customers will see no disruption to their services. "Initially, Newbury & District will be running all of their services exactly as at present whilst further into the future we may look at merging some routes and harmonising branding." Not sure that figure of 600 staff is accurate. I thought Reading Buses already had a Newbury Buses division. It had a similar livery I recall.
