587  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Ticket Barrier accepting invalid ticket on: October 13, 2018, 20:14:15
I had a strange experience at Crawley Station today. I meant to put the return portion of my ticket to Bookham in the ticket barrier but without thinking I put my usual season ticket (which is for Bookham to London zones 1-6) in instead. The ticket went through and to my surprise when I picked it up, the barrier opened. Why? That ticket is not valid for that journey?

Looking at what looks like the phone kiosk I can see it's not in Germany as it's not yellow. It does look northern European, possibly one of the low countries.

Aren't the phone booths in Germany pink/purple? Same colour as T-Mobile. I recall they are branded as T- something or other.

Maybe they are these days but I've not been in Germany for 8 years. I'm sure they had the same colour as the Bundespost letter boxes when I used to visit Hamburg yearly since childhood in the 1960s. They might be different now though.

I don't remember those yellow boxes but it looks like the pink boxes that replaced them are themselves being phased out due to falling use.

Staff on South Western Railway (SWR» (South Western Railway - about)) are set to stage further walkouts in a long-running dispute over the role of guards on trains.

Rail union RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers) said the next strike would run from 00:01 BST on 23 October until 23:59 on 27 October, followed by further walkouts on consecutive Saturdays until 24 November.

It said SWR had "stalled" the talks process and failed to provide an offer.

The rail company accused the union of "needlessly disrupting" customers.

Sigh. That will be more Saturdays where I hang around my local station for the replacement bus that doesn't show up or is half an hour late. Cry

591  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: How do journey planners choose where to have you change? on: October 02, 2018, 22:24:49
I often find with multi transport journey planners that they each have their own ideas about how to get to different places. I mostly use Google maps, Traveline South East and sometimes National Rail enquiries. Often I will take a journey that involves changing trains along a stretch of line where both trains call at all 3 stations (Leatherhead, Ashtead and Epsom) and whilst the planners might agree on both trains to catch, they will suggest changing at different stations.

Grahame - Traveline South East also offer a walking speed mode which may help. I usually select fast walking in normal circumstances and slow if I have a suitcase. This may give you more time for connections, though I suspect it will be clueless when it comes to the availability of lifts, escalators etc.

Mechanical destination boards turning over (are these the solari boards Trowres refers to?)

Yes, as made by Solari, Udine, Italy. There's an interesting thread with a description of how the Waterloo example was operated here:

And you can hear the sound...

I remember these at Heathrow T1. Quite often I'd walk past and they'd be covered by a blind due to some sort of fault. The blinds had a message printed on them saying something along the lines of "use the monitors for flight info"

I do miss the clickety clack sound.
593  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: Disappearing railway sounds on: September 29, 2018, 10:36:20
This one has already disappeared - When the old Metropolitan Line trains were stationery, you would often hear some machinery starting up underneath lasting maybe a minute or so then shutting down. I also remember it on the old Central Line trains.

A Google search suggests the noise came from a compressor.

What does that mean? Google shows me lots of nice pictures of vices for my work bench. Is it a railway term or some obscure word that my English teacher didn't tell me about?

From the Reading Chronicle

BUS services in Newbury have been taken over by Reading Buses.

The Newbury & District operation in the Newbury and Thatcham area employs more than 600 staff.
Reading Buses' interim head Tony Pettitt said the acquisition fitted well with the company's current expansion and would help strengthen services in West Berkshire.
The interim chief executive officer said: "We are delighted to announce the acquisition of Newbury & District's operation in the Newbury and Thatcham area.
"We have been looking at ways of strengthening and expanding our network and after the recent success with our Green Line and Thames Valley services to the east of Reading we realised we had a great opportunity on our own doorstep.

"We will be sorting out all the details and ensuring there is a smooth transition so that customers will see no disruption to their services.
"Initially, Newbury & District will be running all of their services exactly as at present whilst further into the future we may look at merging some routes and harmonising branding."

Not sure that figure of 600 staff is accurate.

I thought Reading Buses already had a Newbury Buses division. It had a similar livery I recall.

Plenty of SWR» (South Western Railway - about) and Southern Terminators from London. Some stay on the platform, others continue to the sidings.
597  Journey by Journey / Transport for London / Re: Consultation on proposed closure of Angel Road Station on: September 13, 2018, 22:27:00
Angel Road is apparently the least used station in London. Wikipedia tells me that there were only 33,500 passenger entries/exits in 2016/7

My ticket too was checked by the guard on the North Downs on Sunday. It was also checked tonight and last night on my SWR» (South Western Railway - about) suburban train by revenue inspectors. First time in ages on both those lines. Must be a blitz going on.

I can understand the passengers acceptance of what he was told. I am aware (but only because of this forum) that breaks of journey are permissible but I am surprised to learn that a break of journey on the return portion can be had continuing on a different day!
I must start planning a few days multi-trip somewhere...
