16  Sideshoots - associated subjects / Campaigns for new and improved services / Re: Portishead Line reopening for passengers - ongoing discussion on: October 16, 2023, 09:07:03
Not good news about this new line, they have now decided they need to do a new business case to see if the line will pay if re opened as the previous one was done before covid so they want to see if it's now changed,

They hope to have the new full business case submitted by march 2024 with hopefully approval of this by summer 2024 September at the latest ,

So we are now potentially a year away from them starting the building work on the new line,

..... and some outbound services become pickup only at Reading........

I cannot see that working in practice. All Friday afternoon trains from Paddington to the South West are supposedly 'pick up only' at Reading - even to the extent of leaving the Reading stop off the Paddington departure boards, yet invariably there is a large exodus of pax from these services at Reading.

Out of interest how do "pick up only" services actually work?
Surely if the train stops at a station people will use the service to get off?

Or is it simply down to restrictions on tickets? EG. Not available to disembark at Reading

It's amusing seeing the photos of old sets being repainted and now being used in Mexico

Great to hear

I've actually use the local bus service more in the past two months that I did in the previous two years

23  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: When do you stand up to get off the bus? on: September 26, 2023, 12:58:10
Unhelpful response, but if I am getting off somewhere that I am familiar with and I know it will be busy I will get up before the stop to ensure I am off before the conga starts

But equally if I am on a bus and the driver has already missed a stop by missing the bell I would get up to ensure the driver notices me ready to alight

Now if I am in an area I don't know I will press the bell and wait for the bus to stop as there is nothing worse than getting up early and being stood for ages

I noticed that the live map and map for a number of services stopping at WSM Hospital the route maps show the names of stops in the wrong order

Two more dates of ASLEF» (Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen - about) strike action, and further periods of a ban on non-contractual overtime have been announced:

Quote
Strike Dates
Saturday 30th September 2023
Members should not sign on for duty between 00:01 and 23:59. This will also apply to any duties commencing on Saturday 30th September that run into Sunday 1st October.

Wednesday 4th October 2023
Members should not sign on for duty between 00:01 and 23:59. This will also apply to any duties commencing on Wednesday 4th October that run into Thursday 5th October.

Overtime Withdrawal
Friday 29th September 2023
Members should withdraw from all non-contractual overtime starting from 00:01 until 23:59 on Friday 29th September.

Monday 2nd October to Friday 6th October 2023
Members should withdraw from all non-contractual overtime starting from 00:01 on Monday 2nd October until 23:59 on Friday 6th October

Does anyone know what sort of impact the overtime ban will have (29/09)?
I am giving a presentation in London that day, I wonder whether I should be looking to reschedule?

29  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: "To stand in a First Class Carriage you need a First Class Ticket" on: July 19, 2023, 11:08:19
Was told this many many years ago when travelling back from Paddington to Weston
I was even told to move from the vestibule area - in the HST (High Speed Train) days

Just to add I have also been told that a ticket doesn't actually include a seat, just the ability to travel
