If they stick anything remotely interesting to enthusiasts on the front, half the train will be full before the public get anywhere near it ! That was certainly true of some of the summer Saturday jaunts to Weymouth from Bristol !
2  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: FlyBe - gone into administration on: March 05, 2020, 22:45:44
The rail line from Newquay to Par isn't much of an improvement over using a horse and cart. Flybe's Dash aircraft were amongst the most environmentally friendly aircraft out there.
3  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Dawlish - permanent resilience work - ongoing discussions on: January 17, 2020, 11:28:04
If HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) cancelled surely Okehampton Tavistock would be cheaper per mile, quicker to build and far more use.

Yes but has anyone asked the newts yet ? Besides how many bankers can get to London quicker ?
4  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture Overseas / Re: Rail fare price cuts - Germany on: January 09, 2020, 11:03:38
If we were serious about cutting carbon we'd cut fares and spend the money allocated for HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) on lengthening trains instead.

However we aren't serious about cutting carbon emissions so it won't happen. Instead we'll have continually rising prices, overcrowded trains and a huge white elephant to move people from Birmingham to London 20 minutes quicker.... and most of the public will love it and keep voting for it.  Grin

Glad I have a reliable new car and don't use Crosscountry trains anymore !  Tongue

It does make you wonder, after at least 5 years of concerted effort, research, planning, and document preparation by North Somerset DC (Direct Current), the LEP» (Local Enterprise Partnership - about), and now WECA» (West of England Combined Authority - about) what exactly is left to do that is going to take DfT» (Department for Transport - about) and a minister 18 months to make a decision on something so blindingly obviously needed. Beggars belief.

Because
a) Its not in London.
b) It doesn't move bankers into the city faster.
c) North Somerset will return Tory MP (Member of Parliament)'s irrespective of spending in the locality. You could get a root vegetable elected there if it had 'Conservative' next to the voting box !

Hence the confusion in government and the many more months of dithering.... they probably don't even know where Portishead is. A five year old could work out there was an overwhelming case for reinstatement inside 10 minutes.

And now another one.

Opinions on this one? https://twitter.com/RoadsignReport1/status/1190280703419834369

If he didn't have a reservation then he should calm down. No right to those seats.
7  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture Overseas / Re: Rosslare to Waterford to finally close on: August 27, 2019, 16:02:57
Shame - I had my first trip to Ireland this year on the Fishguard - Rosslare route and thoroughly enjoyed it. Without the rail link to Waterford I didn't bother visiting anything other than the Rosslare - Dublin rail route. Absolutely crazy that you can't use rail to go cross country unless you go to Dublin and change there.

The sail - rail tickets are amazing value only cost me about £45 from Gloucester to Rosslare, and £37 Dublin - Gloucester. Great fun.
8  Sideshoots - associated subjects / Heritage railway lines, Railtours, other rail based attractions / Re: Looming driver shortage - heritage railways on: August 25, 2019, 11:36:38
Well if Iain Duncan Smith has his way there won't be anyone retiring until 75, in which case there won't be any heritage lines left except the ones that can employ a large number of paid staff.

Apparently the country can't afford pensions any more, even though it can afford corporation tax cuts.
9  Sideshoots - associated subjects / Campaigns for new and improved services / Re: Portishead Line reopening for passengers - ongoing discussion on: August 13, 2019, 09:17:02
The amount of time this project has dragged on you'd think it was HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) ! Utterly ridiculous, and should have been done years ago.
10  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: IETs into passenger service from 16 Oct 2017 and subsequent performance issues on: July 10, 2019, 09:38:26
It must be costing business - anecdotally I won't bother using the train now for holidays nor will my parents. Too often stuck on overcrowded trains with nowhere to put luggage, air con broken, toilets broken, reservations not working etc. etc. Nationalisation can't come soon enough IMO (in my opinion). This is a total shambles.
11  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: What would YOU put into railway / travel room 101?? on: June 07, 2019, 06:02:10
Crosscountry's four coach Voyager sets. Always overcrowded, toilets stink, reservations often not working, and not enough space for luggage.
12  Journey by Journey / Transport for London / Re: Climate change protests to target overground? on: April 17, 2019, 21:04:15
I suppose that its very difficult to protest in a way that gets noticed without inconveniencing the public to some degree. We should make sure all houses are properly insulated as other nations have done - but how do you protest ? Climbing up someone's loft with some glass fibre is hardly news worthy !

The problem is at the heart of capitalism itself - and changing our priorities away from making 100 people more wealthy than entire nations towards a fairer sustainable future for all isn't something the establishment are prepared to countenance. They will need to be forced into it eventually whether they like it or not. The alternative is that we put private profit first, ignore the consequences and everyone looses.
13  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Great Western Main Line electrification - ongoing discussion on: March 19, 2019, 09:22:08
As I understand it these trains have a design life of 27.5 years. Would it be far-fetched to imagine that they will probably have a mid-life refit? If so, perhaps we can hope that this will involve some removal of diesel kit, to coincide with the extension of electrification.

That would give about 14 years to have the remaining electrification completed. Once upon a time I would have said that was no problem but now......

My thinking too, although I think the most likely outcome will be a mad panic in just under 27½ years' time. Years later, as the 40th anniversary of the first IETs (Intercity Express Train) approaches, plans will be announced to replace them. This will raise a storm of protest from the many passengers who love them greatly, especially for their comfy seats and visionary catering trolleys, and don't think the replacements, to be supplied under the only international trade we have signed since Brexit, will be much good. I mean, what does North Korea know about trains, eh?

We could always make new trains in the UK (United Kingdom) under a publicly owned system. Oh wait that would be a disaster wouldn't it.... HST (High Speed Train) was superior to Hitachi's efforts and that was made decades ago !

15  All across the Great Western territory / Looking forward - after Coronavirus to 2045 / Re: Plans from Network Rail - radical station redesign to reduce suicides? on: December 31, 2018, 22:56:51
That line through Gloucester is on old bullhead rail on GWR (Great Western Railway) through bolt chairs. The sort of stuff our heritage line is getting rid of..... no idea why they haven't upgraded this yet and stuck freight through the middle lines. Seems common sense - where you have through lines away from the platforms might as well use them. Certainly cheaper than the measures they are suggesting for suicide prevention.
