31  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: WiFi on trains - vital to customers, or just a "nice to have"? on: June 27, 2023, 17:54:57
I haven't been on a train since before covid, but I would prefer to use my phone with it's hotspot rather than the train WiFi.  My experience was always that the WiFi was slow and dropped out.

From an IT perspective I would rather n people used their mobiles which will communicate with base stations from multiple carriers, than have n people consolidating into the bottleneck of a single radio connection.

Since IETs (Intercity Express Train) were specified to survive Dawlish it is a concern that heavy rain can kill them.
33  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: A tale of missed connections - Oxenholme on: May 05, 2023, 18:09:21
In November my daughter was joining us from London.  The train was running 5 late and the guard announced that there would be a long wait for Windermere passengers.  They had asked for the Windermere train to be held but this was not possible.

When in the Lake District we always drive to Oxenholme not Windermere to avoid problems like this with the connection.
34  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The West - but NOT trains in the West / Re: Local elections, 4th May 2023 on: May 04, 2023, 17:08:25
I felt that voter ID was not being taken seriously today.  On entering the polling station we showed our driving licences and the man checked the pictures against our faces, but there was no check of the name on the licence against the issue of a voting paper.

It seems that the voter id requests are way below the 2million needed, some quotes them in the 50,000s. It will be chaos, especially as in Norwich leaflets have been circulating in a Labour stronghold saying that it is not needed. It purports to be from the Conservatives but I cannot see this as official

There are likely to be teething problems with a new system.  I'm not sure why we needed a new system - the old one didn't seem broke (at least where I live) so why did it need fixing?

OK, I'll bite!    It didn't!  Just another ruse by the ruling party to prevent votes for the opposition

I'm glad I'm not alone in suspecting that.

It has been made incredibly easy to obtain voter ID, a "Voter Authority Certificate" free of charge for those who don't possess any of the numerous approved forms.

It might be easy but it appears that a lot of people have not done so.  It is unlikely that they are all planning to abstain.  Voting should be as easy as possible, and there is no evidence of voter impersonation.
36  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: HS2 - Government proposals, alternative routes and general discussion on: April 26, 2023, 18:16:00
If that prediction turns out to be correct it will be interesting to see how they deal with the lack of HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) platforms at Old Oak Common.

Crayonista Answer:

1. Terminate many/most of the GWR (Great Western Railway) long distance services at Reading rather then Paddington

2. Extend Elizabeth line trains that currently terminate at Paddington from tunnel through London to Reading, with no or very limited intermediate stops

3. Run HS2 trains in to terminate at Paddington using platform space freed from GWR trains terminating at Reading.

The problem with terminating HS2 at Paddington is that major engineering works would be required to surface the HS2 lines and cross the EL lines (GWR reliefs) before rebuilding Paddington to take 400m trains.  Euston might be cheaper.
37  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Boxing Day services - request from GWR for local group input on: April 21, 2023, 09:52:27
I replied in favour of Sunday services.
Personally I am highly unlikely to use them but I can see benefit for family visits / post Christmas returns, and for city visits such as football matches and Boxing Day sales..

Paddington platform 1?

Not without an expensive rebuild.  11 IET (Intercity Express Train) length vehicles only at the moment, as can be seen from this video (from 1m30s in):

Thanks.  I have not been up for a long time and thought there was a long continuous platform there.

J doubt it, but it’s out again on the 1704 tonight described as 19 cars reduced to 5

I can see a 5+5+9 working on a Gloucester to Bristol Temple Meads service, but where else would the platforms be long enough?

Taunton, Paddington platform 1?
42  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / Re: Rail line reopens between Weymouth and Dorchester after death on: March 27, 2023, 09:22:15
Very sad, but my concern was their request that everyone should know that the power was permanently on, I was surprised that they had not known this.

Indeed ... but even if 95% know, the message is worth emphasising for the other 5%.

I completely agree.

That will be a cost missing from the Treasury's savings spreadsheet.

Low hanging power cables would probably more effective Smiley

but health and safety would then require advance notice of low power cables.
