316  Journey by Journey / London to Swindon and Bristol / Re: IEP between Bristol and WSM on: August 10, 2018, 18:47:35
TBH (to be honest) I'd prefer it if a proper HST (High Speed Train) did turn up!

Unless they declassify first it shouldn't be a problem getting a seat, and I normally find the platform number and board the train a good 10 mins before anyone else ;-)

Just as an update to this, total GWR (Great Western Railway) Farce!  Arrived at Paddington about 1850, to allow plenty of time in the lounge (train booked 2000).  Noted that the 1926 to BRI» (Bristol Temple Meads - next trains) was canx, so realised would need to be on the ball to find the platform for the 2000 before everyone else!  But after 10 mins in the lounge, noticed now the 1926 was running and it was the 2000 that was canx!  Spoke to the receptionist, who made a call and then advised getting the 1926 and then another train from BRI to WOR. Now since the only train after that to WOR was the canx 2000 off Pad, I figured that was not overly helpful, and in actual fact would be better getting the 1933 to BPW» (Bristol Parkway - next trains), as at either Bristol station I'd need a lift home, and even without the roadworks in temple way, BPW is easier to get to than BRI from outside the city!

This train was 7 mins late leaving due to train crew late arriving on a delayed service, but a proper HST reverse formation so first was nice and empty.  However after departing RDG(resolve) I learnt that GWR changed their minds yet again, canx the 1926 and resurrected the 2000.  Even so, decided it was not worth the risk of bailing at SWI» (Swindon - next trains) and finding a 5 car IET (Intercity Express Train) rammed with 2 HST-worth of pax, and continued to BPW.  Arrival back in WOR was before the ex-2000 was due anyway, so overall it worked out, no thanks to GWR but big thanks to my friend!

Paddington staff are all rude, I asked if First Class was at the front or the rear and they snapped “I don’t know”. Elsewhere on the network I feel GWR provide great information and customer service.

I saw somebody using one of these get on at Keynsham the other day. So GWR (Great Western Railway) but not gated. She just showed her phone screen to the guard when he came round. Of course her destination could have been a gated station – does it work if only one end is gated?

At the moment, that’s what GWR are saying. They always tweet “we are in the process of rolling it out across the entire network”
318  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Four track for Filton Bank - ongoing discussion on: August 10, 2018, 18:41:37
Went to Bristol today, massive progress since I last went 4 months ago, and it isn’t an easy project that has been set out.
319  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: Cutdown 125's to operate Penzance to Plymouth clockface service on: August 09, 2018, 23:29:09
It would also have been nice to add a composite coach K to add first class for commuters traveling on a connected service.
320  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: IETs into passenger service from 16 Oct 2017 and subsequent performance issues on: August 07, 2018, 11:02:17
I don’t understand why they run an off peak Cheltenham service with a 9 car and operate a 5 car on services between Swansea and London that will run into peak? I was on the 17:42 out of Paddington to Cheltenham and this time of year the 5 coaches was enough.
321  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: 1C04 on: August 06, 2018, 12:13:25
I personally don’t hear of them up in my area.
322  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Shortage of train crews on Great Western Railway since September 2017 - ongoing discussion on: August 05, 2018, 18:27:59
Did I just see a 9 car train on the South Wales line to Swansea? Will this be the new normal? I thought the 10 car trains were going to be run on this line? Some one please enlighten me.

They can operate on all lines that the 5 and 10 cars can. In the new timetable, the majority of Bristol and South Wales services will be operated by 9 car trains. The five cars will run off peak trains to Cheltenham and Bedwyn and continues to operate Cotswolds services. The odd off peak service to Bristol may be a five car however no peak services will run less than 9 or 10 coaches.

The 9 cars were planned to operate Bristol and South Wales from the start, however they were made bi-mode and the 5 cars came first.
323  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Class 802s on: August 05, 2018, 16:51:54
Seat Reservations for Monday, August 13 are booked as IET (Intercity Express Train). So possible that this will be the start of operations. Staff tell me that it should be any of the next upcoming Mondays.
324  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: IETs into passenger service from 16 Oct 2017 and subsequent performance issues on: August 03, 2018, 00:05:05
I get your point well and truely, but for future reference the information board shows the atcuall formation. Platform staff don’t use it even though it is accurate, it showed a HST (High Speed Train) in reverse formation with: L K K F D C B A correctly shown. The man with the bike was annoyed at platform staff for not knowing.

But yes, bad idea by Hitachi however the information at Didcot is good, especially with the carriage numbers shown on the ground now.
325  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / Re: Station stops cancelled 1/8/18 on: August 02, 2018, 10:27:34
This line should be separated from between BTM (Bristol Temple Meads (strictly, it should be BRI)) and GCR» (Gloucester - next trains). Additionally, run an extra Bristol - Worcester service which would give an extra service to Worcester.

Gloucester MP (Member of Parliament) has said that he is working on a every 30m Bristol service so we will have to wait and see.
326  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: IETs into passenger service from 16 Oct 2017 and subsequent performance issues on: August 01, 2018, 19:13:36

Is there any reason why the 5 car sets can't have extra cars added while we are waiting for all the longer sets to be commissioned, even if that does prolong their introduction?

I understand that the units' s/w is set up to allow this.

OTC

How would that work? The project is already well over budget and where woud they go after that time? They would only length them if it was permanent, and the five cars are going to run solo frequently in the new timetable. GWR (Great Western Railway) (it comes as a surprise) do have a plan which they believe will work. We will have to just wait and see.
327  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: 165/166s on this route on: July 31, 2018, 23:46:50
The Bristol Area needs a new fleet of trains, suitable for slow services and fast(ish) e.g

Class *** for Portsmouth - Cardiff, Great Malvern-Bristol Temple Meads, and possible different routing in the next franchise

Class *** for Servern Beach, Parkway-Weston/Taunton and Westbury/Weymouth services (including TransWilts)

If not would there be any rolling stock on the agenda for the next 10 years? No “new trains” have been seen on the line(s) since privatisation. And GWR (Great Western Railway) think these trains are “better” but less comfortable and not practical for short stopping lines?
328  Journey by Journey / Swindon to Gloucester / Cheltenham / Future of traffic between London/Swindon and Gloucester/Cheltenham on: July 31, 2018, 15:55:02
In the May 2019 timetable change, most shuttles will be replaced by hourly London services. This is a benefit, and it makes life easier for myself and many others, however this is not particularly improving frequency of services for Stonehouse, Stroud and Kemble.

When the line was redoubled, it had two purposes. For diversions and possible future extra traffic. However when would this be delivered?

People seem to believe that in the next decade Network Rail plan to increase the frequency to 2tph on the line, with one train per hour leaving Gloucester, and the next leaving Cheltenham.

A. Could you see this happening? It is a benefit for Stonehouse Stroud and Kemble but
B. Can Stonehouse benefit two more trains per hour over Gloucester and is missing a city out like that justifiable?
329  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: IETs into passenger service from 16 Oct 2017 and subsequent performance issues on: July 31, 2018, 15:04:59
A couple of 802s out on test today.

802 006 running from Stoke Gifford to Plymouth

802 101 running from Plymouth to Exeter St Davids

Wonderful photos. Not long until the days of me waiting at Didcot and Swindon in the rain for a HST (High Speed Train) to turn up, beautiful trains. Will be missed.
330  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Great Western Main Line electrification - ongoing discussion on: July 31, 2018, 15:00:49
Swindon will be some what of a milestone in this project, as the first trip that was planned as such can run - the Cheltenham Spa services are now ready for timetabled IET (Intercity Express Train) services, under 1 year early.
