16  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: Car Parking, APCOA (in this case, Oriental Road, Woking) - a cautionary tale on: January 29, 2024, 13:30:20

Sounds like a job for BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page)'s Watchdog team   Shocked

No ........ go to ITV.    "Mr Ellis vs APCOA (Car parking company used at GWR (Great Western Railway) - controlled stations in the area)"..................peak hours on Saturday evening !

10 is Hamburg, just round the corner from Jungfernstieg by the Alister Lake.  One of my favourite places.

To digress slightly:  I used to go to Hamburg regularly, the German for "shandy" is "alster" - alledgedly because the purists say that it tastes like water from the lake !

Its a good idea, just thinking do ALL Bristol/Cardiff bound services use platform four?

When I was at Salisbury last week a Portsmouth bound service used P4 as well !

Ticket machines at train stations charge passengers more than double than what they would cost online for some journeys, according to analysis.

Consumer group Which?'s research said same-day rail tickets were 50% more expensive on average at stations.
..............................continues.....................

Anyone surprised?

Yes................but not with the fares findings. More with "Which ?" using Trainline as its base line for best value.

I'm guessing that the new walls are fashionable bare concrete, which can absorb grease, rather than the ceramic tiles used on older stations, which were chosen partly because they are easy to keep clean.

Cheap to buy/build, running costs 'aint my problem !

MoD was just the same when I was there, The Procurement Executive would buy it cheap, in the full knowledge that they wouldn't have to pay to keep it running for the next 25 years.

Using the IEA to back up a pro-Brexit point of view is hardly in depth analysis.

One could say the same about chosing just one of the items mentioned by Hattons as being the sole cause of their decision is equally suspect and one sided.

Hattons mention seven specific reasons (plus "other.....costs") for their decision - yet "Brexit" is immediately to "blame"....................QED.

PS: It was reported in the national media, only a couple of days back, that there had been a huge decline in the interest in model railways over the past few years....................no connection ??

From Hatton's press release:

Quote
Increased cost of compliance has become a large factor. Brexit, GST and other operational costs of running an international business have all increased dramatically over the past few years.

One word beginning with "B" is the first word in a sentence. They describe themselves as "an international business".

Oh dear................seven and a half years on and they still can't get over it ! A Referendum and a General Election ago .............and "B" still has to be blamed for everything that might go wrong.

Yesterday my car told me that my rear off side tyre pressure was a bit low.............I have worried myself silly since then: A leaky valve ? A nail in my tyre ? Stop Oil protesters ? A "Friday" built Michelin ?
I must suppose that had I voted against "The B Word" and had festered over it ever since I could have instantly blamed "B" for the loss of air pressure in my tyre and all again would have been sweetness and light.............perhaps Ursula von der Leyen would have even snuck in at night, with her foot pump, and restored my blood tyre pressure without my even knowing about the problem.  Amazingly, I have not heard the Horizon fiasco blamed on it - not even by Ed Davey..............yet !!

Ah well..............what could have been   Roll Eyes  Wink

PS:  Institute for Economic Affairs report (6/11/23)  -  " 'B' leaves UK (United Kingdom) trade unscathed ".

It is with immense sadness that we share news of the upcoming closure of Hattons Model Railways, an institution in the hobby since 1946.

I see the "B"-word prominent in their announcement.

Which "B" word might that be ?  I can only see a couple of "B" words and they only seem to be mentioned only once - except "be"..........

Lack of rolling stock...........
More repairs than usual.......
Lack of staff...................
Strikes..................
Pedestrians/cows on the track.............

GWR (Great Western Railway) must be getting short of excuses, they have now had to resort to this one on the Cardiff-Portsmouth line:  https://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/24023777.do-not-travel-warning-issued-wiltshire-trains/?ref=rss

Having said that - will any regular travellers (if there are any left) notice any difference in the GWR "service" between today and any other "average" day ?
29  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: London gets more transport investment - what would it mean for West Wilts? on: December 20, 2023, 19:47:10

.........where the EU» (European Union - about) holds competency................

A classic oxymoron !

Totally agree with your comment about our "politicos" !
30  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: London gets more transport investment - what would it mean for West Wilts? on: December 19, 2023, 20:35:53
Countless UK (United Kingdom) government's have shown they have had no interest spending money on the areas where EU» (European Union - about) grants were given. Think lots of Wales, Cornwall and the North of England. So those specific areas very much did benefit from EU money..............

Did you really expect the UK Government to dole out money to "Wales, Cornwall and the North of England" when these areas were already getting handouts from the EU  ? This "EU money" you refer to would have been appreciably higher in value if the UK Government had been able to give it direct to these areas instead of it losing a considerable amount of its financial value in its travels through the EU's financial shambles.
