Waterloo to Temple Meads surely !!!
242  Journey by Journey / Wales local journeys / Re: First class 231s arrive for TFW. on: November 20, 2021, 13:14:23

No. The 231s are pure diesel and have a top speed of 75 mph.

I did check on that before I posted - the only place I could find which quoted a top speed was Wiki - and that says 90 mph. According to TfW these will be used on Cardiff to Cheltenham & Maesteg (amongst others) those, surely, would require 90mph capability ?
243  Journey by Journey / Wales local journeys / Re: First class 231s arrive for TFW. on: November 19, 2021, 21:49:17
Wouldn't a fleet of 5 car versions of these be absolutely perfect for Cardiff to Portsmouth Harbour ??

Oh, and Clan Line. Cracking picture of D1015. A favourite loco of mine.

D1015 Western Champion was recently (Sept 2021) back out on Network Rail metals load testing with cement wagons in preparation for a return to use on mainline railtours. Sadly, she suffered an engine seizure on a trip to and from Avonmouth and has returned to the Severn Valley Railway for further work. Hopefully she will back on railtours in 2022.

I seem to recollect that not long after I took that photo of D1015 she put a couple of pistons through the side of the engine block.
I love the second part of the video: With the foreshortening effect of the long lens it makes the "light" loco look like a little bubble car scurrying along the track !

Trigger Warning: the piece includes a still photo of the location from 1954 that some viewers may find upsetting.

Those photos of Salisbury tunnel junction are totally representative of today's lineside vegetation compared to some years ago. I do a lot of photography, including railways, and it has become more and more difficult to find stretches of railway line that are not obscured by trees/bushes. I am not talking about going back to the 50s, I have photographs taken only a few years ago, of locations where I no longer visit as it is now totally impossible to see what is on the track at that point.  Example below.

Top photo taken 2009. Lower taken today. I have not attempted to take a photograph here for 5 years or more ! The tree, just visible, on the extreme left of each photo is the same tree. You can just make out bits of the metal fencing !

This could be a really difficult "where was I today" .........................any offers ?

Saved me walking up to count them !

Number of 5 coach trains today -  ZERO !
247  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: South Western Railways Waterloo - Bristol services axed on: November 15, 2021, 11:09:29

This isn't a 5 coach train - this is a GWR (Great Western Railway) 5 coach train !!!              (1012 from Warminster this morning - see my earlier post)

RTT» (Real Time Trains - website) has now been amended - that leaves the mid afternoon "shuffle" as the only 5 coach movements here today.
248  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: South Western Railways Waterloo - Bristol services axed on: November 15, 2021, 08:50:02
Further to my post yesterday regarding the number of 5 coach GWR (Great Western Railway) trains at Warminster..................

A quick gallop through RTT» (Real Time Trains - website) for today reveals:

62 GWR movements
First 5 coach train @ 1012 - 22nd train of the day (rush hour ? what rush hour ??)
Only ten 5 coach train movements all day - 4 of which are the arrival, reversal and departure of the same 5 coaches !!!! (5 coaches to Worcester Foregate St - just what we need)
249  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Shortage of train crews on Great Western Railway since September 2017 - ongoing discussion on: November 14, 2021, 19:15:18
Any passengers for Ivybridge are advised to change at Plymouth and speak with station staff for onwards travel to Ivybridge.

.............."for onwards travel"   Huh  Shouldn't that be "backward travel" ?  - interpret that any way you want !
250  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: South Western Railways Waterloo - Bristol services axed on: November 14, 2021, 13:20:54

Sorry to have to say it, but I have little confidence in GWR (Great Western Railway) providing specified capacity - stock shortage to what's specified has become routine.  It's been going on for a long time and should have been fixed according to promises and commitments long ago.

It would seem that new specifications talking of route capacity are based on the false premise that the GWR services routinely run, and run to the number of carriages timetabled / contracted and to timetable too.  So I dread to think what we will see next year if we're 7 services down northwards from Salisbury.  Please don't promise me that "it will be fixed" and "GWR will provide [almost] all services, on time and at specified length" - heard it before, and it hasn't happened, so why should it this time;  promises more in hope than expectation, DfT» (Department for Transport - about) decisions based on theory not on what's going on in practise.

I note that today (Sun) it takes until the 17th service departs Warminster (@1612) that a five coach train puts in an appearance. Perhaps to say that they are as common as rocking horse manure should now be amended to read Unicorn manure !!!

252  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: Rolling Stock discussion - Cardiff to Portsmouth on: November 10, 2021, 13:11:14
Cardiff to Portsmouth (Salisbury this week) continues to be shockingly under-resourced .   From Cardiff this morning

Only this morning I was told of an someone who has pulled out of regular visits to Salisbury Hospital for specialist physiotherapy because she thinks the trains (and buses) are now so crowded to be unsafe - Covid wise.
Personally, I have noticed myself that 5 car GWR (Great Western Railway) trains certainly seem to be in the minority at Warminster.

(Daily Telegraph today)

As one dog appears to carry more weight than 5,314  humans do (so far) with SWR» (South Western Railway - about), can we find any canine season ticket holders on the Temple Meads to Waterloo service ?  Even Grant Shapps has sided with the dog !!
254  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: Two trains collide near Salisbury - 31 Oct 21 on: November 03, 2021, 13:23:23
Driver is 75…..is s/he the oldest on the railway?

I went to school with someone with the same name as the driver: not a particularly common surname, right age, right area.................I wonder ??

"Review SWR» (South Western Railway - about) service between Bristol TM(resolve) and Yeovil Pen Mill"

Am I missing something here Huh
