16  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: Cotswold Line - 2019 cancellation and amendments log on: January 18, 2019, 12:28:44
That is the sort of thing that passengers were fed up with according to the tonight programme. But is all of the fares revenues going into the railways or are fat cats creaming it off, and the government or other parties, not knowing what is happening. It mentioned that the total cost to electrify from London to Swansea was 10 billion and that's just about already spent, another 5 - 8 is needed to finish it.

You cannot always trust the media to take a balanced view; I cannot recall it anything from "Tonight" but it's not uncommon to come across journalists fishing for an exceptional person to help them make a story out of very little.

Rail finance is very complex ... I suspect that if you get 5 top accountants with varying political views to discuss this, you will end up with five different answers.

Heading off topic here - not a "Cotswold line cancellation log" topic.   Happy for it to be discussed elsewhere on the Coffee Shop, and please feel free to quote this message as a starter.

Sorry graham, been naughty, I was reading this thread when I thought of it, and did not know to put it, so was plonked here so it got noticed.

18  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Great Western Main Line electrification - ongoing discussion on: January 17, 2019, 21:21:29
Did anyone watch TONIGHT ON ITV1?. It was very riveting, it was saying that we got these new trains and that many of them do not seem to be using the overhead wires. Also stated that they were fitted with diesel engines that was mentioned, added to weight and made them less economic. It also stated that 10 billion has been spent on electrifying the line and still does not reach Swansea yet. Some much needed schemes have been shelved. Some passengers were interviewed and were not happy. I think the whole lot was badly planned.

The government and NR» (Network Rail - home page) should of allocated funds to do the following work in stages.

1. Start a Paddington, put up wires, sort track and signalling.

2. Then reading.

3. Then Didcot.

4. Then Oxford and Cotswold line.

5. Then Swindon.

6. Then BPW» (Bristol Parkway - next trains) and BTM (Bristol Temple Meads (strictly, it should be BRI)).

7. Then Gloucester, Cheltenham and Worcester.

8. Then line to Newport.

9. Then Cardiff.

Numbers above should have been done under groups shown.

I.E 1 - 2 CP1. 2 -3 CP2 4 - 5 CP3 6 - 7 CP4 (Control Period 4 - the five year period between 2009 and 2014) CP5 (Control Period 5 - the five year period between 2014 and 2019) REST OF COUNTRY.  8 - 9 CP6 (Control Period 6 - The five year period between 2019 and 2024). CP7 - LATER = MAINTAIN IT.
Then we would of had an electrified railway all complete and new tracks and trains and would of been much more cheaply, as abroad.

Worcester would not be electrified or the Cotswold line.

This is not providing a proper service is it?. Anyway the one train goes via Cheltenham and that's shortened as well.

1V42 0610 Derby - Plymouth hit a person at Starcross this morning. The empty stock, 5Z42, then did the same near Bridgwater this afternoon whilst working back to Bristol.

Why are we getting trains hitting people, why are they getting in the way?.

With due respect, I don't think a comment like that is appropriate when tragedy and possible mental health issues are
involved.

I actually suffer with some of those, but do not go in front of trains, it's distressing for drivers.

22  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: 2019 - TransWilts cancellation and amendments log on: January 17, 2019, 17:19:58
Westbury should of been done, when they could close the station for 7 weeks and relayed the tracks from end to end and replaced the signalling on to TVSC» (Thames Valley Signalling Centre - about)(LIKE THEY DID» (Didcot Parkway - next trains) IN OXFORD) or somewhere, and brought in the unused platform, everyone would be happy, even graham as they would of two tracked the Melksham line as well. I think I need to work for NR» (Network Rail - home page) then it would get done.
23  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: 2019 - TransWilts cancellation and amendments log on: January 17, 2019, 17:15:24
Is this at Westbury? Well I said they should of installed better points, those looked old fashioned. When they relaid the tracks in Oxford they used the ones, that I thought they always install now.

Most likely just teething troubles.  We may be very frustrated at all that relaxin without a fourth track alongside the empty platform face (or at least a stub for it) at the same time, but I rather suspect they'll have put the right stuff in - indeed if anything they may have over-engineered.

Yes I felt that this relaying of Westbury was a waste of money. When network rail could of spent the money on schemes to relieve congestion, like in Gloucester they could of installed two new signals to allow bi-directional working on the lines to Barnwood from Horton road Junction. This should of been done in the 80.s when plat 4 was brought into use. Now due to this, crosscountry do not stop many of their trains due to long reversal times.

All of the I.E.T Trains will be completely refurbished to rid them of the uncomfortable seats, that people hate.

Wake up mate!  Wink

There according to platform staff, maybe a change of seating as I was told, GWR (Great Western Railway) have had loads of people grumbling and would still prefer the HST (High Speed Train) to the IET (Intercity Express Train). This was because I witnessed a customer get off a train in Gloucester and had a go at the platform staff about the interior of these new trains, when they started running into Gloucester. he did really get a strop on.

Well, I'm afraid that post really 'takes the biscuit'....  Before you joined the forum we got on reasonably well and we are quite happy to share information towards the forum to 'enlighten' posters who ask genuine questions out of curosity to 'learn more'.  I've tried to help where possible with that post I but won't be contributing to the forum anymore.

I have only asked questions which I believed to be right, and from information I have been able to obtain on my own, Please do not go, You did an excellent job on the filton bank thread and it was appreciated.

07:04 Westbury to Cheltenham Spa due 09:05 will no longer call at Kemble, Stroud and Stonehouse.
It has been delayed at Westbury and is now 35 minutes late.
This is due to a points failure.

There are at least two video clips available of transport films of 1970's ECML (East Coast Main Line) electrification. They show the flat roofed wiring trains moving slowly ahead while staff walk out on the roofs and run out and attach cables on the move. They did this without guard rails or harnesses, in conditions of ice and snow, passing two abreast, stepping across the gap between carriages.

The final Report (no 14) claimed however, that only one serious accident occurred; when a cable clamp at Newcastle broke and a Resident Engineer was thrown off the roof on to the ballast. (2.119/2.120).

The latest wiring train has high guard rails for working at height.

Safety first

OTC

Why do some people keep putting OTC on some of their posts. What does this mean, when it's at home.
30  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The West - but NOT trains in the West / Re: What is there to do in Melksham? on: January 16, 2019, 21:29:28
In answer to my own question "what is there to do in Melksham" - rather "what is there to see?"

Intended for those readers who know Melksham ... a quiz on the Melksham Rail User Group web site to see how many of the places around the town the residents themselves know. http://www.mrug.org.uk/quiz.html

What is there to do in Melksham? Well you could always pop round to grahams and have a cup of tea, and perhaps a couple of wagon wheels.
