Sorry dunno (not a word) how to put a link into a post, (I am an old git). But....

If you put a search to You tube for '142 Newton St Cyres' you get some FGW (First Great Western) bounceage (you never know if people are using the word it will become one).

"nowt mate, company policy to coast to save fuel!"

Nothingnew about coasting either. Loads of stations in the NSE (Network South East) area have coasting boards to indicate where TPTB (The Powers That Be) thought you could shut off and not loose time. *some* were in the right place.

Well, I can't argue with that.  Though FGW (First Great Western) doesn't exactly run many electrified services, save for their share of the Heathrow Connect services.

A big start could be made by improving how airtight the air systems are. I might shut the engine down if I didn't think all the air would be gone in 10 minutes.
19  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Six beeps becomes four on: June 09, 2010, 13:50:12
Just to concur with Blakey's post and add that there were wiring problems with the Driver<>Guard system which sometimes led to spurious beeps being heard by the driver, which led to at least one incident with a train leaving with doors open.  The extra two from the Guard was a solution to ensure that it wouldn't happen again.  Following the re-wiring of the fleet and installation of more modern handsets it's felt that this extra safeguard is no longer necessary, so it's back to the industry standard 2 and 2.

Change being sold to staff as bringing HSS (High Speed Services) into line with West and LTV (London [and] Thames Valley)

150121 and 150127 are also permitted to call at St James Park in the Exmouth bound direction when in multi with another unit.

Hasn't happened yet though, to my knowledge at least.

It was being discussed in the Messroom at EX the other day and nobody could think of an occasion when 150/1+ anything had been to Exmouth.

But when there are 17 on the fleet it'll happen
21  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: First Silverlink '150' Refurbished on: June 01, 2010, 14:12:22
There is nothing about the slam door that is unsafe, 150/1s haven't been barred from stopping at Avoncliff!

Sigh! The slam door is not a passenger access door (in normal circumstances) and it is clearly not desireable to have passengers using it.

what is difference between using slam door at short platform stations like avoncliff etc and using power single door of a 150/2 at same said stations??

You are right in that (150/2 local door) does happen now. But it is an interlocked door (the brakes are on in Step 3 when open). There is no such protection in a 150/1 hence the slam doors are not passenger doors in normal operation.

Having said that, neither is ideal. AIUI (as I understand it) the plan for refurb is to put intermediate door controls on to allow the leading pair of double doors to be used at such stations.
I have lost count the number of times people have struggled / cursed / failed to get Bikes / buggies / XYZ through the single leaf of a 142 at St. James Park.

If it happens, I think it will be welcomed by our customers.

Incidently I think it is also planned to change the vestibule door locks (to what I don't know).

I was under the impression there was "limited" funds available, and I don't think intermediate door controls or T-key DKS (Door Key Switch) were going to be introduced... happy to be wrong though  Wink

Intermediate door controls are (or were) to be fitted to 150/1 as passengers are not to use the slam door if a 4 car turns up at St. James Park.
Usual caveats apply, they may change their minds if the safety people will agree to a few quid being saved.

If the service is cancelled due to engineering work, taxis can be used to take pax from Bristol to their stations, but are not required to speculatively turn up at stations where there are highly unlikely to be any passengers.

John has hit the nail on the head with this one.
Exeter depot has a booked job to pass home on this train after working the last up train from Exeter to Bristol. I have frequently found myself enjoying  Roll Eyes a meander through the countryside seeing Westbury go past the window in the wee small hours.
25  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: "Putting Customers First" Course. on: March 22, 2010, 22:58:51

Thankfully Drivers aren't going on this course due to the very limited (if any) actual contact with passengers / customers / this weeks buzzword. So it would be tying up resources far better used elsewhere actually permitting trains to be run.

Shame on you Mr. Sprinter Meister. We are all servants of the company. Nothing makes me cringe more than when a member of staff fails to address the needs of our customers.
Perhaps you need to go on the course more than some Undecided
26  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Summer timetable - proposed changes on: March 03, 2010, 14:05:53
I'm told West crews don't sign the B&H (Berks and Hants - railway line from Reading to Taunton via Westbury) however running via Bristol to Taunton in 62 mins seems quite fast!

Who told you that?

Who do you suppose used to work the PZ-Pompey?

Since that stopped running there has at various times been booked ECS (Empty Coaching Stock) work so most Exeter Link 1 drivers still sign the B&H.

Thanks for your help guys. devon_metro - are you saying that it would have a tendency to be late, rather than not turning up at all?

Probably about  up to 10 late like it was yesterday

Hang on a minute. It may have been late yesterday, but one swallow does not make a summer.
I have worked that train and can't remember it being a notorious late runner.
28  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Missing out request stops, even when requested on: January 22, 2010, 16:08:38
Some very unhappy Marines at Lympstone Commando vainly waving at a Pacer - they were in civvies off for a night out.

Most unusual, Usually they do anything to actually avoid requesting the train, I've given up mind reading and always stop the train now,

Always amazes me that Lympstone produces the elite as they seem incapable of reading a timetable or holding the their beer (working the late Exmouths can be an unpleasant experience when the Marines have been on the Pop).
29  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Devon / Re: New railway stations proposed for Cranbrook, Newcourt and Marsh Barton (merged topic) on: January 05, 2010, 10:42:51
There is already rumour (and I stress the word RUMOUR) that FGW (First Great Western) may possibly run services to Honiton or Axminster. There has been no confirmation of this though!

Why on earth would FGW want to waste stock running an extra service on a line that already has an hourly service when there is the Transwilts untapped! This BETTER be a false rumour...

Two possibilities:-

1. ORCATS (Operational Research Computerised Allocation of Tickets to Services) revenue raid.
2. DCC» (Devon County Council - website) sponsor the service and an additional unit, in the same way as the additional services on the Severn Beach line are sponsored.

The RUMOUR that I heard was that FGW train crews would work Honiton / Axminster shuttles under contract to SWT (South West Trains)

30  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Devon / Re: Tarka Line - Exeter to Barnstaple - services, passenger numbers, carriages, engineering works, incidents and events on: December 02, 2009, 15:16:14
I'm sure the chaps and chapesses at Exeter "West" will having something to say about arriving back in Exeter gone 1am!!

No Problem.
The current last Barney goes through to Exmouth and makes the last one from there, so you dont get done until 00.40 anyway.

The major sticking point would be to put a night shift on in Crediton signal box, as currently the Bobby goes home when the last one is off his patch.
