working on Devon Metro services.

During the thankfully short period the failed Devon metro timetable was in operation under Wessex trains you would be very unlikely to find a 143 anywhere near Devon.
Devon Metro was dumped best part of 5 years ago

I shall miss 142001. It's become quite a friend over the last couple of years. It's been raided for parts and christened 'scrapheap challenge' by the fitters

Also known as Sh1tbox number 1

I'm sure you'd find plenty of people in FGW (First Great Western) land who would be more than happy to keep them, especially after the sterling job Exeter depot has done fixing them up.

Sorry but you won't find many amonst the staff. We were talking about putting up a countdown calendar (XX days to go) in the mess room at Exeter.

Personally I am just hoping that my spine does not turn to dust before the (now allegedly delayed) day of reckoning.

34  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Request Stops on: October 30, 2009, 15:55:18
On the Barnstaple line, the services with many requests cannot infact stop at them all and keep time.
The Sprinter Meister only goes there once in a blue moon on a fast service Wink but it is true that you have to tiddle along if no requests mean you are in danger of running early

also missing the FGW (First Great Western) staff name for 142's "Chuckle bus".
36  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: 'FGW train drivers balloted for strike action', from the London Evening Standard on: October 18, 2009, 13:50:06
The Salmonpool crossing north of Crediton on the Barny branch is ungated and has a 25mph speed limit. I think there may also be an ungated 30mph crossing at Umberleigh.

Both Salmon Pool and Umberleigh are 25 mph.

37  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Devon / Re: Changes for Dec TT - track access application on: October 11, 2009, 15:44:30
All 24 Barton Hill drivers are being trained for passenger workings. (Currently 12 trained) so it's likely to be 67s.

More like a certainty. FGW (First Great Western) will be supplying the conductor only. An Exeter man will book on at 04.00 and travel to BTM (Bristol Temple Meads (strictly, it should be BRI)) for the first leg to cardiff.

All the lobbying to bring this work in house fell on deaf ears.
38  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Devon / Re: Changes for Dec TT - track access application on: October 09, 2009, 14:09:12
I guess the other potential difficulty this plan overcomes is that for pax from Central towards Paignton (who might have expected to have to change from SWT (South West Trains) to FGW (First Great Western) at St Davids) can still have a through service.  'Overlapping' the two services between Central and St Davids shares out the changes, which is also good for pax from SWT origins going through to FGW destinations towards Torbay.

This also presumably avoids everyone on the platform at Central piling onto the terminating SWT for one stop, as pax only going to St Davids for other changes towards the north also have a choice of trains.

Paul

The old SWT 17.35 ex Central is the major travel home train for commuters for stations to Paignton and is usually wedged.

It's no suprise at all that the  FGW replacement starts at Central.
39  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Teignmouth 4th and 5th September on: September 05, 2009, 14:35:25
Well, concert was awesome and train service wasn't bad either!

Was very well organised at Teignmouth with extra services to Newton Abbot - although when the train pulled in it was shut up as empty stock. Poor guard hadn't been given any paperwork about it being a passenger service. Apart from that delay though, it went well. A later service to Paignton would have helped a lot of people but not as easy to do as NTA» (Newton Abbott - next trains) I guess.

Given there was only about 2 weeks notice for this - well done!

Nearly wrecked the morning service though......

As virtually no trains were back at the depot before 02.00 it was "play catch-up" for the rest of the night. The depot staff played a blinder and it all got out (05.18 Paignton arrived in the platform at 05.15- but hey it wasn't late!).
40  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / FGW take SWT 158 on hire from June 15th on: June 03, 2009, 12:59:18
Not sure if this is new or not.

Staff have been briefed on the differences (SWT (South West Trains) have fitted a revised direction switch and other minor differnces in cab controls), to allow one unit to be hired in daily.
41  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Newquay and Plymouth Airports - their rise and fall - ongoing discussion on: March 11, 2009, 11:25:30
16.57 PLY» (Plymouth - next trains)-PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains) cancelled yesterday.

I noted several people jumping into taxi's "airport please" Sad
42  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: class 143 refurb on: December 30, 2008, 14:24:54

Apparently this was an issue with the way the DSD (Driver's Safety Device) / Vigilance is configured which is to be the way the 143's are to be fitted up. The Pacers are not currently fitted with vigilance, other that 143617.

The VIG fitted to 143617 is a joke. The way it has been fitted by bolting the pedal assembly on top of the floor plate  means I can no longer get my knees under the desk.

I can only conclude that the aslef delegation who inspected the unit at Eastleigh must all be under 5' 5".
43  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: For those who were annoyed by FGW getting 142s on: October 28, 2008, 10:36:23
Sorry, I don't think I've got this yet. 4 coach 100mph trains are too small? And are going to be replaced by 3 coach 75mph trains (that are 32 years old). When is this likely to hit the press?

As already stated the 315's are 4 car. however the 321/9 units are 3 car.
44  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: FGW may get "NEW" stock for Bristol area on: September 03, 2008, 14:52:29
no offence intended but i would check your info as i am sure in wessex days the mpc was far better than now, although saying that things do appear to be finally improving.one thing i would say though is the mpc figure for the 150 fleet has nose dived over the past 12 months the only explanation is since the majority of the work is now done on spm and not exeter.

Wrong....

The MPC (Miles Per Casualty) under Wessex was always poor. I don't think any class of unit ever achieved over 4500mpc consistently for any measurable period of time. Most of this was down to issues at Canton. Exeter only ever did FPX, 'A' exams and reblocking on 15x except 153's. All other major exams were undertaken at 'Canton Car Sheds'.

Agreed...

Wessex never had a chance in that direction. One only has to look at SWT (South West Trains) and Salisbury to see the benefit of having an in-house depot and dedicated allocation of units.

FGW (First Great Western) have been plesantly surprised that 142's at Exeter have responded in the same way. Considering how unpromising the condition of the units was at the start.

45  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Hopefully just a rumour on: August 08, 2008, 12:12:34

DOO (Driver-Only Operation (that is, trains which operate without carrying a guard)) won't happen any time soon in the West Country. I'ts not on the agenda simply because the investment in Infastructure is massive and the savings are small on rural branch lines.

On an intensive suburban railway say 6 trains per hour, there may be 12 or 14 trains on a circuit. That's maybe 40 members of staff saved (2 shifts + spare + holiday cover).

On the Paignton line it's 1 train per hour, for the basic unit service.
