16426  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: Failure of Bus to train connection - even RAIL REPLACEMENT bus to train!! on: September 21, 2018, 18:38:33
I saw a live chat on National Rail and thought I would try ...

Pre-Ticket Data

This Sunday, Melksham to Swindon - normally first service is at 08:44 (09:12 into Swindon) but this Sunday it's a bus to Chippenham at 08:55 and a train that doesn't get to Swindon until 10:34. Why? What should I do if I want to start work at 10:00 in Swindon?

19:20: Hello Graham Ellis, welcome to our live chat service

19:29: Thank you for chatting with me today. As I have not received a reply from you for some time now, I am going to have to end the chat. If there is anything further I can help with, please do not hesitate to come back to me.

Not impressed.  Failed to answer the question (just confirmed what I had told her on the web site).  Straight after that 19:27 response it came up "Emma C is typing" again so I waited ... and as the next message came up in just two minutes,  perhaps she went straight into "close the call" mode ...
16427  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Failure of Bus to train connection - even RAIL REPLACEMENT bus to train!! on: September 21, 2018, 18:04:24
From my postbag ... what can I say?

Well another spectacular special by great Western.

It bus for the first service on Sunday from trowbridge to Chippenham then train.

This is the best bit it an hour wait for the train from Chippenham to Swindon.

As this bus doesn't connect with the 919 service even those the bus is suppose to arrive at 915. Let hope the bus driver puts his foot down.

This first service is getting busier on Sunday so all it takes is the bus to be plan 10 mins earlier so that it does make the connection.

GWR (Great Western Railway) certainly know how to destroy a service which you guys are working hard to maintain but with not much support from GWR

28 minutes up to 1 hour and 39 minutes ...

Which serves Chathill and also several other small stations on the ECML (East Coast Main Line) north of Morpeth that only get two trains a day each way at the most.  Logic would dictate you'd shut Chathill, Adlington, Widrington and Pegswood, given the distances between them, the number of passengers, and the cumbersome shunt described above, but it's quite nice that logic doesn't always prevail.

I recall my early involvement in TransWilts .. asking the ORR» (Office of Rail and Road formerly Office of Rail Regulation - about) about passenger numbers using the service, and they came back with a very nice letter saying they didn't have train rider numbers - the best they could do was quote passenger numbers from their stats for Melksham, which were around 3,000 per annum at the two trains each way per day level.   In the last year for which stats have been published, Chathill has 2 trains each way per day and 2,768 passenger journeys.  A further 5,000 journeys are made if you include Adlington, Widrington and Pegswood, and note that north of Morpeth the train also serves Alnmouth - big numbers, also served by long distance trains - at which traffic might well grow if service frequency to Newcastle (with extra local trains) increased.

I don't know Northumberland ... but I do know that its figures at Chathill look remarkably similar to those we had at Melksham - and thank goodness the solution we found was to grow.  Different place, perhaps a different solution - logic is to look at all options, including "it ain't bust - just small" through "Chathill for Lindisfarne" leisure traffic ... and "Chathill Garden City"

Not sure if this is the right place to post in the Coffee Shop but in RailUKForums there's a thread about electric loco 87002 working a GBRf charity passenger charter under its own power last night from Didcot West End to Paddington: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/class-87-on-the-gwml.170024/

Post #18 has a hellfire photo of the loco at PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains)Smiley

I don't know where the right place is - and I designed the original darned system!

I am tempted by Preserved railway lines, Railtours and other rail based attractions as it's a rail tour ... in fact I may split it off to there this evening (if I don't fall asleep first after a day's moving!)

What do the yellow MLN signs next to the track stand for?
Engineer’s line reference MLN is Main Line (Paddington to Penzance via Bath).  Divided into six sections.

Have I answered too early?  Grin

Paul

Not in the slightest, Paul ... on the basis that it's become traditional to go out for a Christmas Dinner with colleagues prior to Christmas Day.

Edit to add ... with your answer, Paul, I managed to find more - http://www.railwaycodes.org.uk/elrs/_mileages/m/mln1.shtm - which links to other line codes

07:04 Westbury to Cheltenham Spa due 09:05
07:04 Westbury to Cheltenham Spa due 09:05 has been cancelled.
This is due to a fault on this train.

Following train ...

Code:
Westbury	3 0733 0734	1m late
Trowbridge 1 0739 0739 0741 0743 4m late
Melksham 1 0748 0749 0751 0752 3m late
Chippenham 2 0759 0800 0831 0834 34m late
Swindon 2 0815 0902 47m late

So passengers due into Swindon on the 07:04 (at 07:48) eventually got there at 09:02 .... not a clever morning.

Sadiq Khan said he cannot be sure when Crossrail will be completed.

The Mayor of London said he will talk about a revised timetable at some stage, but only when he has confidence in it.

Quote
Mr Khan previously revealed that he only learned of Crossrail’s delay two days before the announcement.

The mayor was asked on BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) Radio London if he could reassure listeners and Londoners that he has put the checks and balances in place to ensure the current situation would not be repeated.

Mr Khan told presenter Eddie Nestor: “I can’t yet give Londoners the confidence that we will finish the project when we’ve been told by Crossrail with the most recent report.

“What we’re doing now is trying to make sure we have the rigour in Crossrail Limited so we’ve instructed someone to do a report into governance, a very speedy report that will come back in a couple of weeks, in relation to what the governance is like now, what it needs to be, and we’re doing several pieces of work.

“And at some stage I will come out and say what the revised timetable is, but only when I’ve got the confidence in that revised timetable.”

28th September, 2018 will be ... Ask A Stupid Question Day

https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/ask-a-stupid-question-day/

Quote
We’ve all done it, had that question we wanted to ask that just sounded astoundingly stupid. We’re embarrassed that it even occurred to us, and worse, that we didn’t know the answer when it seemed so simple. The truth is there is no such thing as a stupid question, except the one that you choose not to ask. We never learn anything if we’re afraid to ask the question to begin with, whether that’s by researching it or asking someone who might know. Ask a Stupid Question Day encourages you to overcome your fear of sounding uneducated, and opening yourself to learning by asking your stupidest questions.

This forum is ... delighted ... to help our members find answers to questions they are embarrassed to ask.   Please feel free to ask before, on, or after 28th September ... if you don't know the answer, others won't either and will thank you for asking.

If you want to post a rubbish answer, please wait to 24th October
16437  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Another Bristol Parkway Closure - for three weeks on: September 20, 2018, 21:31:44
Why couldn't they arrange with First Bus to run direct buses from Bristol Parkway to Bristol Temple Meads for the three weeks. Say every 15 minutes?

Suggestion from an informed source suggests that they fear them getting stuck in traffic around Temple Meads.  Still road works going on around Temple Gate?

16439  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Great Western Railway: on-board catering, buffets, Travelling Chef, Pullman - ongoing discussion on: September 20, 2018, 16:23:18
New allegedly intercity trains without a buffet car is a significant downgrade for 4+ hour journeys.

Just to be clear - the only passenger journeys always over 4 hours without change of trains will be
> Paddington to Truro and west thereof
> Reading to St Erh and Penzance
(and vice versa)
Paddingotn to St Austell will sometimes take just over 4 hours too.

Such journeys are good GWR (Great Western Railway) business. I suspect numbers are not all that high, but revenue per passenger will be.  But what proportion of journeys made on a Paddington to Penzance express involve the passenger being on the train for over 4 hours?  Surely there will be far more journeys from Truro to places like Plymouth, Exeter, Redruth and Penzance than to London?

13:55 Worcester Foregate Street to London Paddington due 16:27 will be started from Worcester Shrub Hill.
It will no longer call at Worcester Foregate Street.
This is due to damage to the overhead electric wires.
Last Updated:20/09/2018 12:36

I must have missed the electrification between Worcester's two stations …

On a more serious note: any idea what this relates to?

probably delays under the wires on its outward journey

Yes ... late running trains at Chippenham headed west too at around lunch time - probably the train was turned around at Shrub Hill rather than Foregate Street to get it back on time.  The incoming 11:22 from London got in at 14:15 rather than the 13:40 it was due. Set off back at 14:23 (supposed to be 13:59) ... down to just 15 late at present east of Didcot.
