16  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Cherwell Valley Day Ranger withdrawn on: May 13, 2018, 20:24:59
The only GWR (Great Western Railway) trains that run on a Sunday from Banbury to Oxford are between May and September. So this is withdrawn as they come back into the summer service. Mind you even then there are only 3 all day.

Can't see why the NR» (Network Rail - home page) validity map though includes going towards Bicester as it isn't valid on Chiltern - and it isn't even an old map as Oxford Parkway is on it.

If I were to bet on the next one to go it would be the Oxford Evening Out ... always get an odd look when I ask for that one.
That's odd - one of the gateline staff at Didcot Parkway alerted me to the Oxford Evening Out ticket before I had heard of it! It is a bit hit or miss whether there will be anyone on duty at DID» (Didcot Parkway - next trains) to sell you the ticket after a certain time, though. Last time I wanted to buy one, there were no staff at the ticket counters or at the open gates. And it seems that you can't buy the OEO (One Engine Only) ticket online, either.
17  Journey by Journey / To Oxford, Didcot and Reading from West / Re: From Swindon to Oxford and the north on: March 21, 2018, 20:25:22
Couple of years later and the only direct Oxford-Swindon service was in the middle of the night.
There was a brief revival in the early 2000's (I think) of Swindon-Oxford services. Didn't seem to last very long - a couple of years? It was usually busy when I caught it from Didcot.

You got the message across in your brief time on camera grahame. Well done!

I was in the kitchen and thought, I recognise that voice!
And you can see the report https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b09k7f3v/points-west-evening-news-02012018,  with our Grahame's interview starting around the 8 minute mark.

I have heard a rumour that

GWR (Great Western Railway) proved too much for the man,
So he's leavin' the life he's come to know,
He said he's goin' back to find
Ooh, what's left of his world,
The world he left behind
Not so long ago.

.........but I can't confirm it unfortunately 😜

Does anyone know roughly what time he'll be leaving?
20  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Alternatives to the station buffet on: December 10, 2017, 17:44:30
There's a 24-hour cafe bar in the reception part of the Oxford YHA, behind platform 4. I've only tried the drink there, they had some craft beers at the time (2 years ago). They advertised their food https://www.yha.org.uk/sites/default/files/FULL-YHA-FULL-MENU.pdf, so I assume this is available to non-residents.

The One http://theoneoxford.co.uk/The_One/Welcome.html
Restaurant and Bar is only slight further along Botley Road, I've never been there, though.
21  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Class 387 coming to Thames Valley - ongoing discussion on: December 09, 2017, 17:39:44
As I recall there were at one time two such services weekdays, 04:XX and 06:YY. One ran a bit later on a Saturday. Also think there was at least one in the opposite direction at the other end of the day.
I guess the services didn't get enough custom to justify running from Oxford to Gatwick. IIRC (if I recall/remember/read correctly) they were usually 'airport passenger' spec. with extra luggage racks. Oh well.
22  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Class 387 coming to Thames Valley - ongoing discussion on: December 09, 2017, 11:11:53
Hmm. When did we last have an OXF» (Oxford - next trains) - GTW service? Must have been around 20 years ago. I used it at least once - but it was at the more sensible time of 06:30 or so.

Think it's less than that (about 10 years), I recall CrossCountry used to have a service which went via Kensington Olympia towards Gatwick/Brighton.

Edited to add: http://www.1s76.com/1S76%202008.htm December 2008 timetable saw the end of trains through to the South (Sussex) Coast.
I should have explained - I was thinking of the Thames Train service a while back, which (perhaps on Saturdays only), started from Oxford, instead of from Reading, then ran the normal service to Gatwick. Might have only been during the summer timetable, to cater for holiday passengers. It was just a turbo, IIRC (if I recall/remember/read correctly).

24  Journey by Journey / Chiltern Railways services / Re: Chiltern plan Oxford to Cowley service on: November 18, 2017, 22:54:09
One of the supporting consultants' reports, which don't necessarily represent the official view of the NIC, show a minimum of four and a possible fifth station (Redbridge P&R (Park and Ride), Littlemoor Park, Oxford Science Park, Blackbird Leys Road, and Cowley). This seems more like light rail than having the Chiltern trains trundling along it, but it isn't specified as to what might operate the route.
The second stop sounds like Littlemore Park, which is near to Sainsbury's at Heyford Hill. https://goo.gl/maps/s11A5GR6w2B2

26  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Travelling to London Sunday 26th March? on: March 22, 2017, 20:13:47
Slightly tongue in cheek - but for those who enjoy such things - as a result of this there are through trains between Swindon and Oxford via the West Curve at Didcot on Sunday.
Now, i like curves, but West curve doesn't really cut it.

Does anyone know if the Great Western Railway Staff Association (GWRSA» (Great Western Railway Staff Association - website)) premises were effected? I'm hoping to see a band there tonight!

Isn't one of the purposes of a stabling point at Didcot being to run am peak extra EMU (Electric Multiple Unit) services to Paddington starting from Didcot?  In which case to avoid shunting backwards and forwards would it be better positioned west of the station in the Swindon direction?

Paul

There is a large rail connected site just to the west of Didcot West Curve on the route to Swindon.  Plenty of space there now.
Didcot Power Station?

I doubt that anyone who isn't a member of the IET (Intercity Express Train) will get any hassle or recruitment spiel - unless you know better...
