I also noted in the 'Somerset' episode that they spelled one place name wrong on the progress map.

Midsommer Norton. Roll Eyes

Later on, the subtitles included "Blanford Forum". The town is Bland. Tongue

The presenter also mentioned "Evercreek Junction" that episode

Not a good start, with the commentator repeatedly mispronouncing the name of the city of Bath...  Cheesy

Well, when you put it as eruditely as that, Phil - I'm rather more inclined to re-agree with you and ChrisB.  Roll Eyes

Nope, sorry; I stand by what I said. The visitors who are "not knowing their way who I have never met before" are a red herring here. The only person of note is the car driver, who has a responsibility to make her or himself aware of where it is safe and legal to park at all times. There is clear signage at these locations indicating that the waiting limit is 20 minutes. Towards the end of that 20 minutes, you either move your car, pay the fees and take yourself off to stand where your passengers will see you, or you risk incurring a fine. That's your choice, but you don't go bleating to social or mainstream media if you get it wrong. You gambled and you lost. Tough.

This tale of woe makes it sound like the driver had no choice, whereas to the best of my knowledge Yeovil Junction car park has over 200 spaces, including a long-stay area (£2.30 for 24 hours). So what the driver actually means is, he couldn't be bothered (or was too tight) to move from the clearly marked 20 minute short stay area to somewhere that the car could be left for hours on end. Guilty as charged and no case to answer in other words. Next?

The same film is available on the British Transport Films DVD compilation 'On and Off the Rails' (which I have here, and suspect other members may have as well)

What happened to meths?

Mark

Models powered by methylated spirits can't be sold in the USA, apparently; otherwise I agree, that would seem a sensible way forward (my 1970s road roller still runs quite happily on meths!). Gas power is another alternative I've heard mentioned.

17:44 Swindon to Salisbury due 18:55

Taxis have been arranged departing Chippenham at 18:10... calling at Melksham (18:28), Trowbridge (18:41) and Westbury (18:53).

The taxi company is Bath Taxis.

I'd be interested to know what decision prompted the blanket use of Bath Taxis in circumstances such as this. I used to regularly - three times a month at least, if not quite weekly - get stuck at Westbury, and occasionally at Chippenham, needing to complete my journey to Melksham, and the station staff were always helpful and called a local taxi company where available. In the past year or so it's invariably been Bath Taxis or nothing. Rather than wait an hour or more for a taxi to get from Bath to Westbury in order to take me to Melksham I've tended to ring round and find my own taxi company and try, not always successfully, to subsequently recover the cost from GWR (Great Western Railway). I assume there's been a corporate decision to always use Bath Taxis, but I'd be intrigued to know more. How much of the rail network do Bath Taxis cover? Did they win the contract in a transparent tendering process in which other firms were invited to apply? Are there any circumstances when common sense dictates that it might be more sensible to use a different taxi company that's already waiting outside the station in question rather than impose a long wait while a taxi is despatched all the way from Bath?

Behind a paywall so couldn't read it properly.

Someone has already archived it on a free-to-read site (always worth checking!)

No idea, but I love that the writing on the front of the train is written mirror-style, presumably in order that should it get too close to the train in front, the driver could see which engine it is in her rear view mirror...

I went down to the station in Melksham to mark this momentous occasion - unfortunately however it was showing as delayed, and sure enough it was eventually cancelled. Says it all, really.
12  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: National Rail web based ticketing site: december '23 update. on: December 11, 2023, 19:08:57
Those few comments lead me to the question -
Which site (s) do YOU plan/purchase your journey tickets from?

Everyday use, I tend to go to GWR (Great Western Railway), mainly because it's a lottery whether or not my train from/to Melksham is going to run, so I may as well stop there and buy tickets if there's anything running or at least only delayed and not cancelled.

https://book.splitmyfare.co.uk/ seems to come up with the best options for more complex journeys I find.
13  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: National Rail web based ticketing site: december '23 update. on: December 09, 2023, 19:20:53
It doesn't let me buy a weekday ticket from Melksham that gets me to work in Westbury on time. In theory I start work at 09:30. My usual train leaves Melksham at 09.10 and arrives in Westbury at 09.26 [sometimes... it's usually late]. Unfortunately I then have a 20 minute walk from the station in Westbury. So, I make up the 15 minutes or so that I'm late each morning by staying (very!) late. However I'm aware that there is a service that leaves Melksham at 07.21 and, with two changes (at Chippenham and Bath Spa), gets me into Westbury at 09:05 - a longer journey, and more expensive; but it does at least get me to work on time. The National Rail site referred to here however responds with "no fares available. Please choose another journey." The RailEasy site lets me buy it - admittedly at seven times the cost of a regular return fare, but surely that should be for me to decide?
14  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: 2023 - Train update and amendment log - Swindon <-> Westbury on: December 07, 2023, 08:31:23
I tried to get home to Melksham from Westbury on the 16:23 today but not only was that cancelled (despite the train being on the platform), but ALL trains back to Swindon (four, I think) cancelled after that as well....

16:23 - so due into Melksham at 16:38.

As an alternative, there was a train at 16:25 which got to Trowbridge at 16:31.  A bus then left Trinity Square at the top of station approach at 16:57 and got to Melksham Town Centre at 17:30.  Perhaps not as fast, but in the land of integrated public transport that I was hearing about at the Area Board in Semington this evening, surely that would have been suggested to you??

It wasn't, although it did occur to me. However, I felt very uncomfortable about walking around Trowbridge town centre in the dark, feeling vulnerable (white, middle class males stand out rather in Trowbridge), not knowing exactly where bus stops are, so I got a taxi in preference. Also as it happens the 16:25 had already left by the time the 16:23 (which was standing at the platform!) was cancelled - and the next train to Trowbridge was significantly delayed beyond 17:00 as well.

17:36 Swindon to Westbury due 18:20
17:36 Swindon to Westbury due 18:20 will be cancelled.
This is due to a shortage of train crew.

Further Information

I tried to get home to Melksham from Westbury on the 16:23 today but not only was that cancelled (despite the train being on the platform), but ALL trains back to Swindon (four, I think) cancelled after that as well. Station staff did offer to get passengers a taxi, but that would have had to have come from Bath (they aren't allowed to use local, Westbury taxi services apparently) which would have taken longer than walking, if that were even feasible. So I paid for a taxi out of my own pocket to come from Melksham to pick me up from Westbury and offered a lift (courtesy of the ever helpful station staff) to anyone who wanted to join me. I know there's a strike happening, and the weather's been unkind elsewhere on the network, but the disruption this week really does seem to have been notched up considerably.
