46  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: Car Parking, APCOA (in this case, Oriental Road, Woking) - a cautionary tale on: February 01, 2024, 16:54:17
I still get grief when I mention "five and twenty past five".  It was the way I was taught.

There's a simple solution: use "12 noon" and "12 midnight", as PhilWakely and Royal Museums Greenwich recommend.

At work we used the 24-hour clock for our expense claim forms, with a day running from 00:00 to 24:00.

Or should that be 00:00 to 23:59?   Grin
48  Journey by Journey / Cross Country services / Re: Diverted trains January 20-28 on: January 31, 2024, 17:42:17
Kept meaning to post this last week and never got round to it.

A Cross Country HST (High Speed Train) diverted via Freshford in 2014.   There were two in the cab so not sure if they used a pilot with route knowledge on that occasion.

Quote
A ‘beloved’ Reading coffee van selling fresh pastries and cakes has been forced to closed following four devastating break-ins.

Located at Tilehurst Train Station, Wolesley Street Bakery coffee van was a popular stop for people heading to the station.

Following the break-in at the beginning of January, the owners decided to close the van on January 9, 2024.

The latest theft was the ‘most damaging one yet’ which involved thieves using an angle grinder to go through the lock and hinges of the van where they stole the coffee machine and grinder.

In my experience it is very unusual these days for a mobile call to drop mid conversation when the user is not moving about.  Almost makes you wonder if “the system” hung up.

..and then the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton.   Oh no.....
53  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: 2024 - Service update and amendment log, Swindon <-> Westbury on: January 25, 2024, 12:59:37
Although of little consolation for those waiting at Melksham, the need to divert long distance trains through there was not, for once, infrastructure issues.  There was an incident at Hungerford where a person was found on the line and it was not immediately clear what the circumstances were.

That being said, it was the latest in a long line of issues which does have a cumulative effect on people's patience and perception.
54  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Problems with IET trains from April 2021 on: January 24, 2024, 08:39:38
Answering my own question.  Looking at Realtime Trains it was 166 207 as far as Exeter St Davids and then 150 248 forward from there.   Thinking about it, are turbos cleared on the main line past Newton Abbot?
55  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Problems with IET trains from April 2021 on: January 24, 2024, 08:19:11
Was it even three coaches or was it swapped for two on the way?  I am told it was 150 248 that arrived at Plymouth.
56  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Ticket purchasing on the GWR App suspended - January 2024 on: January 23, 2024, 10:55:44
Owing to a fault the ability to buy tickets on the GWR (Great Western Railway) app has been disabled at present.  You can still look up train times however.   The website purchase function is not affected.

Most often I'm to be found talking to Finn. And that's despite the fact he's now deaf.

Can't say I blame him.   Grin
58  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Devon / Damage to bridge on Barnstaple line - January 2024 on: January 21, 2024, 18:51:46
Damage has been reported to an overbridge on the Barnstaple line at Copplestone.   The line is set to be shut until at least Tuesday (23rd Jan).

Services to Crediton from Exeter being maintained by Okehampton services, although they are terminating there this evening as there are several weather related problems beyond there to Okehampton.

Edit to add:  Okehampton services now suspended too, so no service to Crediton.
59  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: 2024 - Service update and amendment log, Swindon <-> Westbury on: January 21, 2024, 18:23:11
Just to note the service survived unscathed today despite a track circuit failure meaning pilot working was needed until lunchtime.

Best thing I have overheard on a train

"When does this train call at Oxford" (as we approach Newbury on a West of England Service)
