Cornwall. a very warm welcome to the forum.

I believe the Royal Albert Bridge was always single track.  I read somewhere recently what the cost would have been to make it a double track and so the decision was made to provide only a single track crossing.  Unfortunately I cannot remember now where I read it or what the cost was!

Welcome to the forum folrmc.  I've just tidied up your opening post to clarify the quote and your post.  Have you a view on the crossing remaining open or being closed?

It isn't just guide dogs for the blind though, which I am sure many people would prefer to remain with them while in strange surroundings, there is the wider issue of assistance dogs.  They can alert their owners to such things as "hypos" in diabetics - which clearly means they DO have to stay close to their handlers.

Taunton and Worcester - so good they named them twice!  Grin

Of more concern is I went to the station specially to get them and didn't notice til now!

They obviously opted for safety on the booklet for the Cornwall blockade which starts today - there is no map on the front!
6695  Journey by Journey / Swindon to Gloucester / Cheltenham / Re: ^14.5 million cash boost for Worcester improvements on: February 15, 2013, 22:24:23
Perhaps another use for the unit would be to extend the service from Cheltenham to Oxford rather than terminating in the bay at Swindon. Via the West curve at Didcot you could reach Oxford in 30 mins from Swindon.

Comes to something when a train manager is injured to such an extent that he/she can no longer do his/her job. I sincerely hope that whoever was responsible is brought before the courts and punished to reflect not only the assault on the TM(resolve) but also the hundreds of passengers who were late home.  Probably hoping too much but some sort of message should be sent out.

I've had the same experience with the last two offers from RSH.  I'm tempted not to bother if there is a third time.
6698  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Renting in London 'cheaper than commuting from Swindon' on: February 14, 2013, 12:28:51
^58.50 expensive? It's dearer than that from Banbury, and BAN is closder than SWI» (Swindon - next trains)....

The ^58.50 is an Anytime Day single - the same ticket from Banbury is ^35.10.

I have never tried it but I am told the Restaurant is at its busiest on a Thursday - the thinking is those who use the restaurant tend to go home earlier on a Friday.
6700  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Person hit by train at Ealing Broadway - 10th February 2013 on: February 13, 2013, 10:04:01
I agree it would need to be done on a station by station basis.  At some there is nowhere to stand for a train other than on the platform.  The alternatives being a subway or even outside the station itself.

Furious mum calls for 24-hour disabled access at Twyford station

An angry mum is calling for 24-hour disabled access at Twyford station after a humiliating journey with her son.

Hurst mum Sarah Barnard, 46, spent more than two hours trying to get from London to Twyford on Sunday, January 27, after being sent on an unsuccessful detour to Reading with wheelchair-bound Theodore.

Now the mum-of-three is insisting on action from First Great Western (FGW (First Great Western)) to avoid more families being embarrassed by the limited service.

She said: ^It ended up being a disaster. We couldn^t even get off the train [at Twyford]. It spoiled the whole trip.

^They have ramps and lifts but there are times you can^t access them.

^We did the research [for travel] to the British Museum and the timetable website could check on services that are wheelchair accessible. Nothing popped up to suggest we couldn^t use it at a certain time.^

Miss Barnard and 12-year-old Theodore, who has cerebral palsy, were sent to Reading where they were advised to wait for a disabled access taxi which never came. Station staff eventually decided to escort them back to Twyford with a ramp.

^The guys that helped us were really lovely, it was just a rubbish system,^ Miss Barnard added. ^It was humiliating for Theodore. We should be able to use facilities that are already there.

^We are not the first people this has happened to. A man was stranded on the middle platform on New Year^s Eve.

^It makes me angry, when they opened the lifts there was a big hoo-ha - but it^s not true.^

The station lift opened in November 2009 and is available while the station is staffed between 6am and 7pm on weekdays and 8am to 3.30pm at weekends.

FGW provide free alternative transport from an accessible station to an unaccessible station during unmanned hours.

A FGW spokesman said: ^Railway infrastructure dates back 160 years and we know many of our stations need work to improve accessibility.

^In the past three years we have delivered improvements at over 40 stations, spending in excess of ^6m.

^To ensure best value for money we have to prioritise which station improvements will benefit the most number of people.

^We will be considering accessibility at Twyford in future works programmes.^

swrural - it was 44 years ago that I used to abandon the bus and use the 4d my mother gave for the fare to buy a penny sweet and the 3d child single fare from Reading General to Reading West on the way to school!

Thanks for posting those constructive and thought-provoking comments, trainer.

My understanding is the person in question didn't die at the scene and was taken by paramedics, so I do hope that the person gets the help they need and has a speedy recovery.

Thoughts do of course go to those involved who witnessed it all.

Indeed so, as reported by the Ealing Gazette

AN ELDERLY woman is recovering in hospital after being hit by a train on Sunday.

The victim, believed to be in her 70s, was treated at the scene for head injuries Ealing Broadway station.

A witness who asked not to be named, said he was on the other side of the platform when she was hit by the fast-moving overground train which was not stopping at the station.

He said: ^I heard a loud bang and tuned around and then I saw something on the platform. I didn^t realise it was a person until I got closer and then ran quickly to alert staff and called an ambulance. She was bleeding quite heavily from her face but she was breathing. The train had stopped further down the track.

^It was a shock. I^m just glad to hear she wasn^t more seriously hurt."

Four ambulances, medics in a motorbike and one in a car as well as the team from London's air ambulance in a car were sent at about 4.10pm. She was taken to St Mary's Hospital in Paddington by ambulance escorted by a doctor from the air ambulance. Her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The station was closed for about half an hour.

British Transport Police are still investigating the cause of the accident but say they are not treating it as suspicious.

However the additional coverage has answered one question.  When I mentioned the story to a relation who is not interested in rail for one moment they asked..."If you were on your own, why would you lock the door?"  If it was an outside loo I would!!
