16  Journey by Journey / Thames Valley Branches / Re: Contactless on Thames Valley Branches on: March 24, 2022, 09:42:30
I'm totally cofused!

We know they are being installed on the Marlow branch but what tickets you can by for what journeys is not clear.
 I
This raises a number of questions.

Do you have to register your bank card?

How do know if your journey is covered?

What happens if you tap in but not out (station with no reader)?

What about child fares?

What about railcards?

How does a TTI check you've tapped in?

Differentiating between between and off peak Fares.

I am sure there are other questions but tis is what comes to mind.

Watching open Train Times for Taplow noticed everything on the Relief Lines.

19  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: Saying which applies to people but not buses or trains on: February 10, 2022, 12:03:26

Or to put it simply: most trains have to be late, because otherwise too many would run early.

I think that you are mixing up arrival time and departure time. Whilst it acceptable for a train or bus to arrive ealy, it should not depart until the booked time. As most schedules have some form of recovery time built in given a clear run they are likely to arrive early.

I see the name chosen to  follow the German practice in having the name of the City at the beginning.

I tried to count the number of Frankfurt (Main) stations there are, I lost count at 30

i nearly got run into by a cyclish on the Ashton flight in Brum. I was lock wheeling when this guy came raoring down the towpath just as I was walking up to the next lock. Having just missed me me he stopped and swore at me. Fortunately I was carrying awindlas.

Yep Langley Station Bridge is one of the regulars.

I see Modern Railway has takenb up one of my Magdeburg solutions, a rigid RSJ (Rolled Steel Joist, which can also be called ) at bridge height a few metres in front ot the bridge.

It's  a pity more bridges are protected by my second solution of 600Volt tram wires. But then we are anti tram in this country.
23  Journey by Journey / Chiltern Railways services / Re: Should more trains call at Sudbury & Harrow Road? on: January 10, 2022, 11:19:20
ElectrificationIt  it does seem crazy that ’t already happened, although I suppose it’s not all that long ago (in the scheme of things) that Marylebone was going to cease to have any mainline rail service at all?

When built Sudbury and Harrow had platform loops to allow fast rains to pass. As did around 11 other stations on the lines from OOC (Old Oak Common (depot))/Neasden to Aynho Jn.

After Beeching it was proposed that Marylebone should become a coach terminal with dedicated route in over the railway. I seem to recall that the scheme lasted until someone pointed out two coaches couldn't pass in the tunnels out of Marylebone.

I agree electrification would be ideal especialy if Bicester Oxford, Aylesburt Blechley and Bedford coupled with Didcot Banbury and Bordesly to  New Street. Which would give several diversionary routes,

I suppose one would have  put up with 4 rail from Harrow to Amersham unless TFL (Transport for London) could be to go with Dual voltage stock North of Harrow which would mean wires to Watford North and Chesham as well.

What chance a rolling programme of electricfication?

24  Journey by Journey / Thames Valley Branches / Re: Reading Green Park on: January 05, 2022, 15:42:03
Browsing Open train times and Realtime trains around Reading area the other day I found a West of England train stopped at Southcote o let abasingotke Reading stopper in front. Finding  the stopper's  schedule on Real Time trains I was surprised to see it had a minutes stop at Green Park

Just like the famous signal in the Battle of the River Plate "Anticipation"

You can now search Real Time Time trains for Reading Green Park ~(RGP)

Excellent set of questions, eightf48544, thank you!

Thanks Grahame I've  got a real stinker for next time  to which I haven't yet worked out an answer!
26  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: Advent quiz - day 6 Station Oddities. on: December 06, 2021, 14:25:20
Q2  One (plat 3) with a single reversal. (With multiple reversals  8.)

I would agree with that answer - or indeed suggest it's just half of platform 3, with a limit of just 4 carriages into / out of that platform from the west.

Fond memories of that platform  where we turned 48544 from Hove to go back Light Engine to Redhill.

That was quick I'll try and make them harder next time.

Q5 BOGnor Regis, PEArtree, POOle
Correct

Q1  Crumlin ?
Correct

4 I have read that they had seagull problems so l guess it is either playing gull distress or alarm calls or using birds of prey to keep them away
Nearly there can you be more specific.

Q2  One (plat 3) with a single reversal. (With multiple reversals  8.)
Correct Also Grahame for a fuller explanation.

Q4 Woodville Road Halt and Maindy Halt had platforms on the up line (From Queen street) only. To travel to Queen street passengers joined the up train. The train reversed over a crossover at Maindy and returned on the down line.
Correct in every respect

Still need the specific deterent for Q3
29  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Advent quiz - day 6 Station Oddities. on: December 06, 2021, 06:03:31
Station  Oddities.

Q1 There were many stations with High Level and Low Level  in their names. Which pair had the greatest vertical separation?

Q2 Brighton is a three way junction. How many platforms can a train use to travel from the East Coast (Lewes) to the West Coast (Worthing)

O3 What deterrent is Network Rail employing to prevent damage to the tetrafluoroethylene {ETFE} roof panels at Manchester Victoria Station.

Q4. What was unusual about the train service to the now closed Woodville Road Halt. Which was between Cardiff Queen Street and Radyr?

Q5. A scatological Question. Where are  BOG PEA and POO?

Usual rules 1 go in 24 hours. I’m back to bed.

Customer Advice:
TFL (Transport for London) Rail are conveying passengers between London Paddington and Reading in both directions until further notice. Arrangements have been made for Great Western Railway rail tickets to be accepted for these journeys.

Aren't they valid normally?
