All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Running the buses with the trains - 100 years out of date, or time for a rebirth

The obvious answer for GB▸ is TfL» in London. Fares are certainly integrated not so sure about timetables but the frequency of most services makes timetables uneccesary. Andy Burnham said on any questions he wants a TfM.
Germany is the obvious example for local services with fare zones arounf large towns. Buses trains (not ICE or IC▸ ) trams have common fare structure. Connections tend to be provided e.g. In Erfurt the last trams to edge of the city have guaranteed bus connections to places not served by the trams. In Dresden in the evenings many services meet at the Postplatz and wait for connections.
The trouble with GB we are obsessed with the Market and Competition.

Journey by Journey / Thames Valley Branches / Re: Callum Marius Visit To South Greenford

The Greenford Branch is a bit of an anonmoly. In steam days it ran push pull from a laybe siding between Doown Relief and Up Main East of Ealing Broadway, not sure what the frequency was.
In diesel days it ran to and from Paddington. With electrification it is still diesel but cut back to a new bay platform at West Ealing.
The branch and West Ealing are definitely the poor realtions. West Ealing is served only by Crossrail with its Hayes and Heathrow Central stoppers. Whereas the branch is GWR▸ Turbos.
Good connections from the West the Greenford departs 57 Heathrow stopper arriives 58! Hayes stopper gives 14 minute connection.
Down to Greenford from Padd is 13 minutes.
Up to Padd from Greenford seems to be about 8 minutes
Down from Greenford from West Ealing is 8 minutes
Not very good particularly with an hourly service.
A look on Real Time suggests the Chiltern ghost Train is not running or I couldn't find it.

Agreed a very good tour. It was an interesting how difficult it is to run a train on todays fragmented railway. A whole list of different organisation had to be involved.
This compares with BR▸ one of my jobs at Waterloo in the sixties was helping proof read Special Notices for Engineering work and special trains etc. Our bit were teh signalling instructions if it was special. eg I used to know the numbers of teh points to be clipped to get a special into Eastleigh works. The locol Inspector was task with job og getting teh points clipped, just as motive power was charged with providing power andtraffic with finding coaches., but everyone was under the same umbrella.
Nowadays one organisation provides the power another the coaches, another staff to clip etc. So it was triumph of organisation to get where we got to.
The catering staff were also excellent considering this was only their third trip and it takes some oragnistion to feed a 100 plus people on a moving train. Despite tha the service and food were excellent.
Of course, the tour was right to exclude the Rhubarb loop as everyone knows that is old hat.
I haven't done it yet!

Got caught for a couple of hours in the old Scunthorpe yard by the slide bridge at Keadby. It was a hot day and they couldn't get the rail locks back in place after letting a boat through.
It was Hetertfordshires Roxey? Music Tour.
It also ended interestingly in that on approaching Stevenage an annoucement was made that all passengers for Potters Bar should alight at Stevenage as the main train was going via the Hertford Loop. However the late John Farrow arranged for ECS▸ from Royston to use an obscure crossover from Up to Down thus we got some very rare track and traveled wrong line on the Down Slow to Potters Bar where we alighted. I believe that was probably the last rain to use tha crossover and that it was removed shortly after.
Raises another interesting topic "How much infrastructure should be in place for the occasional emergency"
