181  Journey by Journey / London to Kennet Valley / Disability Friendly Stations on: March 04, 2009, 21:06:15
I would like to nominate Theale as the most unfriendly station to disabled people on the Kennet line. As far as I can see there is no point alighting or trying to join the train if you have limited mobility. I am not sure what the disabled parking spaces are there for!!! My nephew who uses a wheelchair really struggled to join the train there. Are there any worse on the route?Huh

182  Journey by Journey / London to Kennet Valley / Parking Newbury to Theale on: March 04, 2009, 21:03:16
Was told in no uncertain fashion today when buying a car parking ticket at Theale (because the machine wasn't taking credit cards) that from the end of the month ticket offices will not be selling car par tickets on stations from Newbury to Theale. The suggestion was that I better have some change just in case the machine wasn't taking credit cards as there would be no other alternative to purchase a ticket. Its good to see the service level improving on the route!!!!!!

Be interested if anyone could direct me to a decent source of operating diagrams IE what are 165/166s used on ? how are they diagrammed for those duties ?

Cheers

Spot on. Nearest station is Newbury, traveling to Theale, Slough and Paddington (doing the same job as in Cornwall). Not an everyday commute but several times a week. Quite impressed with the turbo's - would have been fun in the West Country.

Just started logging on again. Now living on the Reading - Westbury line, somewhat different to the Gunnislake branch. Getting used to 165/166's rather than my old diet of 153's and 150's

I think I will start going via London. I'm really fed up with them.

I am travelling each weekend to Birmingham from Exeter and back at the moment and am utterly fed up. Last night the 18.10 had no air con in my coach and it was virtually unbearable with the stench from the toilet making it very unpleasant. To make it worse some of the seat reservation displays weren't working so difficult to know which seats were reserved.

My partner travelled with her three year old son three weeks ago and the train was so packed that she had to stand all the way from New Street to Bristol Parkway. I dont think I have had one comfortable journey over the last two months. The Voyagers are getting in a real state - I am sure it was never this bad with Virgin. I think I may well start driving.

Another odd journey yesterday - the 13.00pm Paddington Penzance HST (High Speed Train) had coach C replaced with a first class saloon. It caused all sorts of confusion as although definitely coach C it retained first class stripe and of course first class seating. Passengers were confused many standing in the corridor until reassurred that it was a standrad class coach.

Funnily enough this question came up recently in one of the railway magazines.

It appears to be a detached HST (High Speed Train) power car on the Newquay branch.

Can't remember exact details but unit failed and one of the power cars was detached and the passengers ferried to ?

There was a picture of it standing with passengers milling round I think at St Dennis or one of the other intermediate stations.

However, in general terms I still think single 153s on the mainline between Exeter and Plymouth are a complete waste of  valuable train paths.

Interested to see in Railway Magazine this month a report of power cars 43134 and 43146 coming to rescue of failed HST set resulting in triple headed class 43 on the 19.05 Paddington-Penzance on 5th Feb.

Sitting on a 150 coming home from Truro I started thinking what would the prize be for the most unusual journey in terms of stock over the last few years on FGW (First Great Western). Not that we have to many types of rolling stock but I am sure thre most be some examples of odd workings. I have heard of HST (High Speed Train) power cars on the sleeper but what gets the prize for the oddest working ?

I would be also interested to know how far West an Adelante has got (Penzance ? Newquay ?)

A ride home on 180 tonight  - 17.04 Reading to Exeter St Davids. Saw several passing through Reading while I was waiting.

Welcome to the forum, amiddl.

Several adelantes?

Was a Reading station from about 3.15 until 5.00 off and on and saw several (well three trains formed by 180's rather than three 180s if that makes sense).  I suspect I was double counting though seeing units going up to Paddington and then on the way back

Strange to think it may be my last trip on one
193  All across the Great Western territory / Introductions and chat / Hi from Gunnislake on: February 13, 2008, 21:46:53
Hi from the Tamar Valley.

I travel regularly up and down Cornwall mainly from Liskeard and up to Bristol and Paddington. Just had a work trip today on FGW (First Great Western) with a HST (High Speed Train) up to Reading and a 180 back to Exeter St Davids (seems strange that if rumours are correct it might have been my last 180 trip).
