HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) to be delayed....

BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) News - HS2 construction to be delayed to save money
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-64901985
Delaying a project never saves money, unless we enter a period of deflation.
47  Journey by Journey / London to Didcot, Oxford and Banbury / Re: Oxford Station - improvements, incidents and events (merged topic) on: March 02, 2023, 10:13:19
Now reported by Network Rail that Botley Road will be closed from 11th April until October.

I notice this morning that they have started wrapping the old Youth Hostel in plastic presumably to stop debris/dust etc falling onto the surrounding area.
48  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: 2023 Delays and Cancellations on: January 25, 2023, 22:01:06
I came across the bridge about 1 hour before this incident and it didn't seem any worse than usual, although I had had a beer  Smiley

More importantly this bridge has obviously been getting worse over the last few weeks, so is anyone aware of any plans to fix it or at least stabilise the situation.
49  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Regulated rail fare increase, March 2023 on: December 24, 2022, 17:33:58
The government implication that they were somehow doing us a great big favour by limiting the fare rise to only 5.9% really got up my nose!

How about no more increases until the DfT» (Department for Transport - about) et al have figured out how to run the industry properly? Then we the taxpayer might not have to cough up for things like the Class 769 debacle!

and if there's no more fare increases, how are the additional costs to the railway funded and who pays?

From the Government, same as for roads.

Maybe the annual increase in rail fares should match the annual increase in fuel duty? And see how much some drivers complain if it was the other way around. Just to be clear I am also a car driver and owner.

From jorneycheck
08:04 London Paddington to Penzance due 13:07
Facilities on the 08:04 London Paddington to Penzance due 13:07.
Catering is reduced in the front part of this train. Toilet facilities are not available at front. Disabled toilet facilities are reduced at front.
Additional Facilities Information
Below freezing temperatures have affected the water pipes on this train. No water is available for catering in the front part of this train, and therefore no hot drinks are available.

However, I note the 14;15 also has this note.  Would have thought the pipes would have unfrozen by midday!
I can't speak for the rest of the country but in Didcot the highest temperature it has been since Satuday is 0.3 C, with it being -10 C last night, so maybe it won't defrost today.
51  Journey by Journey / London to Didcot, Oxford and Banbury / Re: Oxford Station - improvements, incidents and events (merged topic) on: October 31, 2022, 20:17:44
I must admit I'm surprised Oxford City Council are prepared to allow such a long full closure of Botley Road to cars.  They cycle and footpath routes are going to be very busy!
Maybe they will use it as an experiment to see what happens when one of the major routes into Oxford is shut.
After all there aren't really any alternative routes that vehicles from West Oxford can use to get into Oxford with Botley Road shut, as they either have to go north via the A34 to Peartree or south via the Southern Ring Road, both are which are a very long way round.
52  Journey by Journey / London to Didcot, Oxford and Banbury / Re: Oxford Station - improvements, incidents and events (merged topic) on: October 31, 2022, 14:56:53
It could happen, but turning the bus around will be difficult. Mill Street will remain open, but not really suitable for buses
If the cafe at the bottom of Roger Dudman Way is being closed then there could be room to turn buses around there, and they may of course be able to use part of Botley Road as well.
53  Journey by Journey / London to Didcot, Oxford and Banbury / Re: Oxford Station - improvements, incidents and events (merged topic) on: October 31, 2022, 12:50:00
Presumably the bus will terminate on the west side of the station, passengers will get out and walk to the other side of the station and, if necessary, get on another bus.
54  Journey by Journey / London to Didcot, Oxford and Banbury / Re: Oxford Station - improvements, incidents and events (merged topic) on: October 31, 2022, 11:27:42
More updates from Network Rail https://www.networkrail.co.uk/running-the-railway/our-routes/western/oxfordshire/oxford-corridor-phase-2#upcoming-work

Including the news that Botley Road is likely to be shut for the whole of 2023 to vehicle traffic except for emergency services.
55  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: Southampton area rail replacement bus services 16th October 2022 on: October 16, 2022, 19:42:53
There was an announcement at the Southampton vs West Ham game today that there were not enough drivers for the rail replacement buses and that supporters needed to make their own way from Southampton to Eastleigh.

That would mean 100's (maybe 1000's) of supporters trying to find their own way; which might be just okay for locals but feel sorry for those from West Ham.

What is the point of a public transport system that just tells it's customers tough luck you are on your own.
56  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: Portsmouth Harbour to Fratton - the new Brighton to Hove on: September 26, 2022, 08:39:00
Presumably Portsmouth Harbour to Portsmouth and Southsea would be even shorter Smiley
57  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Kennet and Avon at Crofton on: August 23, 2022, 11:57:32
When this happened previously they bought the steam pumping station back into use, presumably they could do the same today although I guess it takes quite a few hours to get the steam up to pressure.
58  Journey by Journey / London to Didcot, Oxford and Banbury / Re: Oxford Station - improvements, incidents and events (merged topic) on: August 17, 2022, 13:23:29
Good news, funding has been approved for the long required upgrades to Oxford Station.
https://www.networkrailmediacentre.co.uk/news/green-light-for-oxford-station-and-railway-transformation-following-gbp-78-6m-funding-confirmation

Dft state this is worth £161m, not sure how they get to this total as press release only mentions £78.6m + £69m + £10.5 m which totals £158.1m.

59  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Rail unions strike action 2022/2023/2024 on: June 15, 2022, 13:01:32
Hmmm....that page does tell you that they haven't, and when they will be available!
So what I said was correct  Wink of course you are correct as well  Wink

Of course I could say it is poor design, and it probably is, but it was also user error (I didn't scroll down to bottom of the page).
A rhetorical question, but why provide a link to timetables if the timetables aren't available?
60  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Rail unions strike action 2022/2023/2024 on: June 15, 2022, 11:23:34
Maps now available of where trains will run on strike day and the day's in between
https://www.gwr.com/strike

I doesn't look to me like timetables, at least those linked to from that page, have been updated yet.
