31  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Rail unions strike action 2022/2023/2024 on: March 21, 2024, 10:10:03
Yes, GWR (Great Western Railway) drivers used to get an enhancement of 0.25 for bank holidays but that was removed several years ago as part of a pay deal.  So, Good Friday and Easter Monday are flat rate pay and Easter Sunday is just a ‘normal’ Sunday with a 0.25 enhancement.

Avanti are the same, but I guess some other TOC (Train Operating Company)’s may still have some form of an enhancement, but even then I doubt it’s a particularly lucrative one.

Nice to see Easter not being targeted.

The action is just rumbling along at a very low level waiting for the Tories to either be replaced (hoping that Labour are prepared to talk and compromise) or decide the good PR (Public Relations) of a settlement to all the disputes close to the election is a good strategy.

The union has no other cards to play.

Yes, and nearby Stamford is also a nice town.

And how much work can it take to electrify 41 chains of double track?

You’d only have to electrify one of the tracks as you could simply roll down the ‘Down Poplar’!  Grin

Indeed.  I’ll say it again…you need to interpret industry codes, that RTT» (Real Time Trains - website) and others harvest, loosely.

I am not going to speculate on the 19:04 dropping off people at Reading on a Friday these days - I do not have the knowledge to inform; I am not a politician so I can say "I don't know"  Cheesy Grin

I’ll see if I can take another few looks at it myself.  Smiley

The relief train to Plymouth and the resulant superfast run of the regular Penzance train are for the summer only.  The extra train has other things to do come the autumn.  The path IS being kept so that it can be run again when appropriate amd there's a train to do it.  So not really a long term thing for Plymouth.

There is what I read as widespread early concern amongst the informed and interested in the community, and indeed in GWR (Great Western Railway), at the effect the closures for six years over the Christmas period - ranging from 2 days some years to 18 years in other years - is going to upset passengers, as will extra stops if they are to be aded thereafter at Old Oak.   There is a feeling that the new station will bring very few benefits / new travel opportunities to GWR passengers who are having to "pay" for it with extra disruption and slower journeys.   But I suspect at the end of the day people will just put up with the disruption and slowing, with the wider community getting a bit upset nearer the time it actually happens, but then learning to live with the changes that are permanent.

How much MPs (Member of Parliament) are briefed, by who, whether they choose to take these briefings / inputs further and what they look to achieve by doing so will vary between them.  It was very interesting to see the different ways our local MPs in Wiltshire and BaNES reacted to the news that well used through services to and from London were to be withdrawn, and the murky and dirty way that had been decided.  Some made very strong and public inputs in support of the services (not that it saved the services), other talked of going in to see the minister and raising it with him - but the way this was reported left it very unclear as to whether the MP in question had made a strong input on our behalf, or had assured the minister that if he stuck to his guns it would blow over.

Thanks for providing an objective, informed and reasonable answer to my question, Graham.  Though I think you meant 18 days and not 18 years!

Still waiting any more insight as to whether the 19:04 is being badly crowded with Reading passengers on a Friday?

That assertion will bring a wry smile to the face of anyone who's travelled on the 1904 Plymouth service on a Friday!  Smiley

In your experience has that been a problem in the last four years since COVID?  I only ask as I specifically took a look at it on a couple of Friday evenings last year and there was a decent amount of room on board for a train that time of day, and only a handful of people alighting at Reading - though happy to be corrected if that's not usually the case?

The faster journey time to Plymouth is welcome however likely to be temporary until work starts in earnest at Old Oak Common on the Acton-Solihull express.

You've lost me there.  Can you elaborate?
39  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Briefing on forthcoming changes - from GWR on 14.3.2024 on: March 15, 2024, 22:30:25
It is an effective policy in that it lessens the number of people for Reading quite significantly on what there would be otherwise.

The 2h 51m journey time to Plymouth is nice to see for those calling for faster trains.

Some pretty awful delays this afternoon.  Not an ideal start to the new signalling system's life.

Yeah, Cheltenham Races pinching a lot of 9-cars this week.

My remark was intended to be light-hearted criticism of hitachi and their nasty little trains, there was no intention to mislead and I regret any confusion or offence caused.

Just spotted this, thanks to ChrisB for pointing it out, and I do accept you were just trying to be funny and the clarification afterwards.

But I would appreciate it if the quote could be removed/altered back to what I said, as it’s never a good idea to mis-quote someone without asking their approval, even in jest…especially when it just so happens to then conform to your own views which, as you know, I don’t share.

I think it’s right to be slightly suspicious of any survey on transport that has been commissioned by a group with particular interests in one part of that sector, as it is with Hitachi Rail in this case.
44  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: Devon and Cornwall resignalling on: March 11, 2024, 13:26:20
Thanks for that. I found that site very difficult as there does not seem to be a search box.  I got Paddington, Liverpool St and a number of other locations but not what I wanted.

Click on ‘Select Line’ and it’ll list all the maps.  Not the easiest to find what you’re looking for I agree.

Lovely to be able to ‘see’ where the trains are west of Liskeard for the first time ever.
