1  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Poor first impressions on: June 19, 2012, 10:10:04
Maybe you could use it as an opportunity to teach your son about ecomonics.  It's not always cost effective to collect every fare for every journey.  The reason the nailsea machine does not take cash is an economic one as it has been broken into so many times it is cheaper to have it card only and miss collecting a few fares.

Also as his return journey was from Weston if he had failed to buy a ticket he could have been given a penalty fare.  One of the reasons for a penalty fare is to encourage you to buy before you board. He would have to make the journey several times and not pay to make it cheaper than the penalty fare.
2  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Ticket office closure fear for Yatton on: March 02, 2012, 09:30:48
What McNulty has done is look at the whole country and see what ticket provision there is and then proposed a standardised model to apply.

You can see the logic.  If a place the size of Hungerford has no ticket office then why does a place the size of Yatton need one.  Personally I think that Hungerford should have a ticket office.
3  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: Lack of imagination on Cotswold line on: February 16, 2012, 17:03:59
The sole aim of the double track was to reduce delays caused by late running trains.  Trains coming off the branch at Oxford late were causing large delays to trains towards London Paddington.

Does the free ticket for an  under five count if the Adult has a First-Class ticket?

Yes

Stop, look, listen, live.

This was a basic principal that was taught to me by my parents as well as in school - If they had followed this, they would still be alive.

The parents/idiots are just using NR» (Network Rail - home page) as a scapegoat and are completely ignoring that fact that their children were dippy enough to ignore the warnings and run infront of a train.

What about the harm done to the driver who watched them disappear under his unit, or the poor bystanders on the platform who had to endure being covered in the girls 'red mist'....

Schools are probably too busy teaching kids about Global warming and human rights to bother about things like basic road/railway safety and 'not talking to strangers'.

I cant agree with that.  As it said in the report the most likely explanation for their behaviour is that they assumed that the reason for the barrier being across the road was for the stationary train in the platform.  By pleading guilty Network Rail has accepted that the crossing had inherent design flaws which had been recognised years earlier and which they had not acted on.

It would seem to be obvious to me that a person could make such an assumption and that any gate should be of the locking type.

The girls were not reckless but made an understandable mistake which sadly cost them their lives.
7  All across the Great Western territory / Looking forward - after Coronavirus to 2045 / Re: Watching Panorama ... on: January 26, 2012, 21:02:19
Even if we still had BR (British Rail(ways)) there would still be people employed to log delays and the reason for them.  If you dont investiagate delays then you are not going to stop them happening again !
8  All across the Great Western territory / Looking forward - after Coronavirus to 2045 / Re: MPs debate new GW franchise on: January 06, 2012, 09:51:16
Just for clarification March 2013 is given as the end of teh current franchise. I thought I'd read that FGW (First Great Western) has ben given an extension until Dec 2013 or is old age catching up on me.

Definitely no exstension to Dec.  They may extend it by 6 weeks to take it past easter as there is a major blockade over easter 2013
9  Journey by Journey / North Downs Line / Re: Unit refuelling on: January 02, 2012, 20:40:48

However, I am aware of some DOO (Driver-Only Operation (that is, trains which operate without carrying a guard)) of 165/166 between RDG(resolve) and PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains), however, would 165/166s be allowed to travel ECS (Empty Coaching Stock) from Redhill to Selhurst with Driver only??

AFAIK (as far as I know) there is no ECS working anywhere in the country which needs a guard on board.  Its all DOO
10  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: extremely outdated sign on: December 05, 2011, 10:22:44
Towards the bristol end of platform 8 at reading there is a 6 car marker.  Its in chocolate and cream and I assume comes from BR (British Rail(ways)) (western region) days so would be about 1950.  Could be earlier though.

Next time I get the chance I will take a photo as I am sure it will go with the redevlopment of the station.

So what happened?  Did the signalman close the DR in error 2 hours ahead of the booked and advertised closure?

12  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Trains without retention tanks spray human effluent over railway trackside workers on: December 04, 2011, 09:43:35
A few years ago Network Rail said they were going to start charging TOC (Train Operating Company)'s extra for dealing with the problems of items flushed onto the track at terminal stations.  So FGW (First Great Western) started work on a system that would stop the flush working while the train was at a station.

Then the ORR» (Office of Rail and Road formerly Office of Rail Regulation - about) said that Network Rail were not allowed to charge extra so the development of the system was stopped.  I believe one set of coaches was modified for the prototype.
13  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / Re: It's all happening at Freshford and Avoncliff tonight? (3 December 2011) on: December 03, 2011, 20:51:10
I guess with the christmas market shoppers some passengers were unable to get on the previous train which was stopping at Freshford and Avoncliff.
14  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: What's up with the 18:33 Reading - Penzance tonight on: December 02, 2011, 20:37:31
I think you may know the answer to this now! The 1736 from Reading to BTM (Bristol Temple Meads (strictly, it should be BRI))  broke down near Reading West. The moment I heard the "will the train manager please contact the driver" announcment I knew there was a good chance we would be stuck there for some time...

But apparently because we were delayed over an hour we are entitled to a refund but I'm not sure how that works on a weekly ticket.

Cheers!
Wait until the ticket has expired then send it in with a refund claim form.  Forms available from ticket offices.
15  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Rail fare prices - the basis of increases (merged ongoing discussion) on: November 27, 2011, 08:26:18
The new fares are already there eg. Super off peak single Truro - London up from^51 to ^55, CDR (Off Peak Day Return [ticket type] (formerly 'Cheap Day')) Truro - Falmouth ^3.70 - ^3.90

Those are both unregulated fares so could stay the same.  Its the regulated fares such as season tickets, SDR and SSR which will need changing.
