1  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: June fares increase Devon & Cornwall on: June 29, 2023, 16:15:45
From Plymouth Live

Quote
Great Western Railway train fares for journeys in Devon and Cornwall are set to increase this month. The train operator says this is due to "shifts in customer demand".

Ticket prices for all off peak journeys in Devon and Cornwall, including ones that travel to and from Taunton, will soon be increasing by five per cent as GWR (Great Western Railway) reports changes to customers' habits. They say they are hoping this will also encourage people to travel on quieter trains.

GWR also explained that the increase in fares is also intended to help the company generate a "sensible financial return for government." A spokesperson for GWR said: "From June 11, Off-Peak Day fares within Devon and Cornwall, including fares to/from Taunton, are increasing by 5%. This is designed to help manage shifts in customer demand and encouraging travel on quieter trains, while ensuring we are generating a sensible financial return for government.

"As part of the current National Rail Contracts, all revenue is returned to government and train operators are paid a fixed management fee.

"The Devon & Cornwall Railcard continues to offer 1/3 off all standard class Anytime or Off-Peak tickets to local residents.

"And Off-Peak fares still offer a significant discount against Anytime fares."

Encourage people to travel on quieter trains Huh When and how - Off Peak being bottom tier in the South West for local journeys, Super off peak fares don't exist for these journeys ?!? Huh IMO (in my opinion) the spokesperson is talking b*ll*cks.
2  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Half term Havoc ? on: May 30, 2023, 13:35:18
Unsurprisingly some services from Paddington on Thursday showing as fully reserved
3  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: Cornwall - some things change and others haven't on: May 22, 2023, 20:00:35
Looking at Eden Project bus service from St Austell for summer 2023 I was quite surprised to see the limited bus service. Is the number of visitors by public transport now that low ? Or is the attraction much less popular in general these days perhaps ?
4  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Half term Havoc ? on: May 22, 2023, 19:38:15
As next week is schools half term holidays and we have strikes taking place on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday (also ASLEF» (Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen - about) no overtime etc on Thursday) will services on Tuesday and Thursday be swamped or will travellers stay away / travel over Bank holiday weekend instead ?
5  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Shortage of train crews on Great Western Railway since September 2017 - ongoing discussion on: May 19, 2023, 20:43:22
But change trains at Plymouth to a castle set !
6  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Friday 19th May Cornwall issues on: May 19, 2023, 01:46:38
Shocked If your going to Cornwall from Paddington later in the day it's not looking good - 1703 1804 1904 all reportedly not running through. The Sleeper isn't an option either !!  Time the government stopped playing games with the unions ........
7  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Groupsave on: March 24, 2023, 20:39:55
A blackout calender on National Rail website used to detail dates when these couldnt be used eg. Cheltenham festival, but it hasn't been undated recently.

Did anyone else know on Fridays only GWR (Great Western Railway) don't permit Groupsave on Paddington to Penzance departures 1404 to 1904 inclusive ?  Roll Eyes Just one concern -  you can buy discounted tickets for all these services quite happily online, erm from GWRs website ?!?  Grin
9  Journey by Journey / Cross Country services / Re: A first Cross Country journey in over three years. on: January 25, 2023, 00:05:47
Shocked Grin A pleasant shock to hear of a decent journey involving Cross Country for a change !!!
10  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Penalty Fares on: January 24, 2023, 19:59:16
Don't think average non-regular rail traveller tourists going for scenic ride to Carbis Bay (£2.00 return) or St Erth (£4 return) will be too impressed being asked to fork out £50 !!! Daily Mail would be thrilled to report this.
11  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Penalty Fares on: January 24, 2023, 18:14:26
Shocked St Ives (and for that matter Barnstaple & Okehampton) are Interesting additions to penalty fare area - if the TVM (Ticket Vending Machine)'s don't accept cash you could have one passenger wanting to pay by cash being sold a ticket and the one behind paying by card receives a penalty fare ??
12  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Christmas Eve travel warning on: December 21, 2022, 01:38:18
Shocked Anyone travelling to Cornwall from London  should note only 4 services operating Saturday morning, 0804 0904 1004 1104 (only 1004 through service to Penzance, connection from other 3) then 1204 to Plymouth only. More London bound through trains are available AM only from Penzance (1015 ex-Penzance last through train).
13  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Weekend First Upgrades on: November 30, 2022, 20:16:45
Sad Read somewhere recently GWR (Great Western Railway) weekend first upgrades will be available on the weekdays between Christmas and New Year. However looking at BR (British Rail(ways)) fares.com site suggests only available 27th & 28th but not 29th or 30th ?? EDIT Our member Plymothian was the source for this.
14  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Progress of shift from paper to smart tickets - RDG on: November 01, 2022, 18:39:23
Smiley I refuse to use e-tickets, why should I do something DfT» (Department for Transport - about) think is best thing since sliced bread for no real benefit to me. Just an excuse to say look how many people use them - lets shut ticket offices ! If they were that bothered they'd force Tfl to accept them on tube for cross London journeys ??
15  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Delay repay doesn't work for multiple tickets bought in same transaction on: October 28, 2022, 00:38:42
GWR (Great Western Railway) make a song and dance out of refunding cancelled Sleeper tickets (strike day) from August !!! Why are these things so hard to sort out ?? Is it worth complaining about this length of time to sort it out ?
