Certainly one way to guarantee the last loco hauled service of the summer is full and standing. Good thinking by FGW (First Great Western) and DBS» (Deutsch Bahn Schenker - UK (United Kingdom) website) which is nice to see a TOC (Train Operating Company) thinking outside the box as it were by doing something different.

If anyone is travelling on this service and is able to post some pics that would be great.

Confirmed by SWT (South West Trains) MD Stewart Palmer during last week's SWT Webchat that a 158 takes over the Lymington branch Mon-Fri from May 2010 with a 450 running the service at weekends.

I can confirm that the units will be withdrawn from the Lymington branch at the May timetable change in 2010. We evaluated all the options for rolling stock on the Lymington branch and came to the conclusion that the most cost-effective solution in the long term is to provide a Class 158 diesel Monday to Friday and a Class 450 at weekends.

Poor advice from rail staff means some travellers pay more than double the cheapest fare, reports Which? magazine.

Enquiries to ticket office staff and the National Rail Enquiries Service (NRES (National Rail Enquiry Service)) found prices quoted higher than the lowest fare in 27 out of 50 cases. Two in three station clerks and two in five NRES staff did not offer the cheapest fares and some offered tickets over twice the cost of the cheapest.

Train company representatives said the report was "seriously misleading".

They were a bit stuffed on and off the field it would appear.

I was tempted to post this in The Lighter Side but if I had been on this service I wouldn't have found it very amusing:

Passengers are to be compensated after a train broke down twice and took seven hours to complete a two-hour journey from London to Norwich.

The train left Liverpool Street at 2330 BST on Tuesday, but broke down at Ingatestone and Colchester in Essex. Delays in dealing with both problems meant the train was stuck for several hours. It reached Norwich at 0630 BST on Wednesday.

National Express apologised and said it would carry out an investigation.

Many on board were football fans returning from Norwich City's defeat at Brentford.

I bet the atmosphere on that train was jolly after yet another defeat for Norwich City. They are obviously very well behaved fans as it doesn't report that the train was trashed.

3644  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: "New improved inter-urban Porstmouth-Cardiff services" from 2018/2019 on: August 16, 2009, 09:54:22
Sorry didnt realise Trowbridge was a busy station. I knew Westbury was an important one as people connect into many other services there.  There are many other trains which call at Filton tho so people could connect at Bristol Temple Meads. This would provide a non stop service from Cardiff/Newport to Bristol TM(resolve).

Could there be scope for a limited stop between Southampton to Portsmouth and Southsea? What other TOC (Train Operating Company) run services along this line?
I think a limited stop Cardiff-Portsmouth service returning to what it was a few years ago would be a good idea provided good stopping services are provided in between the fast services. I find it surprising there isn't demand for 1st class particularly between Bath/Bristol-Cardiff.

In answer to your question, the other TOCs operating on the line between Southampton and Portsmouth are SWT (South West Trains) and Southern (not all the way to Portsmouth)
3645  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Millions of passengers face 20 per cent fare rise on: August 14, 2009, 21:27:07
but passengers still willing to use the trains.
Yep and FGW (First Great Western) and all the other TOCs (Train Operating Company) know this. Yes there will be a bit of hot air from the media for a few days but in a few weeks it will all be forgotten about until January when the process starts all over again.
