1  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Problems with IET trains from April 2021 on: May 08, 2021, 19:01:23

That picture is actually related to the issue identified a few weeks ago - the yaw damper. It was leaked onto a forum.

I read on said forum that >80% of GWR (Great Western Railway)'s units have failed the initial inspection with the new problem - source seems well informed.
2  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: GWR Ticket Machines no longer accepting American Express ? on: February 22, 2017, 20:46:56
I've had this issue. Assumed a dodgy ticket machine and just went to the ticket office. If there was no ticket office presumably I am fine to board the train ticketless, since I have a valid payment method but the retailer is not accepting this through no fault of my own...?
3  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Wetherspoons on or near stations on: June 19, 2016, 12:04:00
At airports all the Spoons charge higher prices.

Indeed.  I have recently used both the airside 'spoons at Glasgow and Edinburgh airports.  Prices are the same at both.

The drinks are reasonably priced (not Wetherspoons typical prices, but still cheaper than many pubs on the high street): £3.55 for a pint of Doom Bar (CAMRA vouchers accepted).

Food is pricey.  The burgers (typically £4.59 with soft drink or £5.59 with alcoholic drink, outside Central London) were only available as "gourmet upgrades" (typically £6.59 or £7.59) but priced at £10 to £11.50 without the drink and without the onion rings.  Add on £3.55 for a pint and you're looking at minimum £5.96 more for less food.  Also meals like chilli con carne are around £11.50 (again, slightly different meal contents to the standard high street chilli and rice option).  No steak on offer, presumably because steak knives are not permitted airside.  No daily "clubs" (steak, curry, chicken, mexican, fish).

I visited both airports on a Wednesday evening two weeks apart.  In Glasgow, we were the only customers in the pub and speeded through security in less than 30 seconds.  At Edinburgh, the pub was almost completely full and security was painfully slow.  Service in Glasgow was much better than in Edinburgh.

The 'spoons at Gatwick south terminal is considerably worse. £4.90 for a pint!

Edinburgh 'spoons is always packed when I pass through, but from what I can tell it's the best place to be in the overcrowded terminal other than the BA» (British Airways - about) lounge!

Regarding Wetherspoons at railway stations, a new one is due to open at the top of the ramp outside Edinburgh Waverley (it might already be open).
4  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: WiFi expansion to 150s & 158s on: April 10, 2016, 13:03:31
As the HSTs (High Speed Train) and 180s have WiFi, and the 165s and 166s are being rolled out, its now the turn of the 150/2s, 150/0s and 158s begin to get theirs fitted.

Unfortunately Devon and Cornwall won't benefit much as most of their services are provided by 143s, 150/1s and 153s.

I imagine the 4G coverage is fairly patchy too!
5  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Passenger bitten while helping BA air crew subdue man on: April 04, 2016, 22:10:26
After all BA» (British Airways - about) stands for Booze Available .

Well, it would be rude to turn down free champagne wouldn't it  Grin
6  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Passenger bitten while helping BA air crew subdue man on: April 04, 2016, 22:03:13
I was on BA104 just the other week.

Boarding at the gate was, as is standard in the Middle East, lax, with no check of the passport/ticket once in the "holding pen". Odd really considering this was two days after the incident in Brussels.

I wouldn't describe Dubai airport as a place to get 'lashed' though, given the general feeling towards such behavior in the U.A.E. Suspect the free flowing booze onboard BA» (British Airways - about) had more to do with it!
7  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: 48 hours travel delay for Easyjet return journey to Bristol due to fuel leak on: April 04, 2016, 21:54:33
I can think or worse places to be stranded!
8  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Cashback on tickets any sites to recommend? on: April 04, 2016, 21:49:51
I buy through GWR (Great Western Railway)'s site, no matter which operator I am travelling with, and thus get Nectar points. These alone are not to be sniffed at, as my wife has just demonstrated during a "doubling up" period in the shops, coming home with all manner of decent swag paid for largely in accrued points.

I then pay for myy ticket with my Santander 123 credit card, which gives me 3% cash back on, for example, my first class ticket from Bristol Temple Meads to Crediton (^6.60 with my newly-acquired Senior Railcard). Other cash-back credit cards are available (I have three others for where Santander isn't the best deal), and probably a cash-bach for west of the Severn Bridge.

I love a bargain!

Certain operators e.g. VTEC, offer cheaper tickets on their own AP tickets by a few %, so it's worth using them if you ever use the East Coast (or at least did last time I used them). They also offer Nectar points.
9  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Maximum time a driver can drive without a stop on: March 06, 2016, 22:24:56
One of the longest non stop runs must be Virgin East Coast 0540 Edinburgh - London. Running from Newcastle to London non-stop for 2 hours 36 minutes.

Seems to be formed by the 12:20 Westbury - Swindon

12  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Cheapest weekday first return Taunton to London on: February 13, 2016, 23:50:11
Both your mentioned trains convey the Pullman restaurant, so in theory you can travel in First Class without paying for the privilege, so long as you eat slowly!
13  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Class 387 coming to Thames Valley - ongoing discussion on: October 19, 2015, 21:16:43
I've traveled London Bridge to Brighton and return on them and the ride quality is far superior to Desiros. Considerably less sideways motion. They are absolute rockets when on OHLE too!
14  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: ^10 Advance Promo ticket offer. Bristol-Swindon to/from London & Thames Valley on: September 03, 2015, 21:53:44
Just booked some. Also some very generously priced advance purchase tickets - ^12.50 from Paddington to Paignton! Bargain.
15  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / Re: Effect of fracking on railway lines and traffic on: August 31, 2015, 17:53:13
I hope you have found this useful.
Fracking is just not worth the risk, IMHO (in my humble opinion).

Presumably therefore conventional oil & gas extraction should stop immediately then!?

They both pose risks, however the technology is designed to prevent any damage. Oxonhutch provides a very detailed explanation of the "fracking" process. Many 'conventional' oil reservoirs are hydraulically stimulated to extract the oil. Heaven forbid, they also re-inject gas into the reservoir!
