1  Journey by Journey / Cross Country services / Re: Birmingham New Street Redevelopment on: May 15, 2013, 16:39:59
I too recently travelled through Birmingham New Street, when changing trains en-route between Aberystwyth and Exeter St David's.  I was disappointed to find the area which I walk through between platforms completely stripped back, with very few outlets available to use for passengers changing trains, as the majority are now housed in the new concourse, which is only accessible for passengers beginning and ending their journeys at New Street.  This is not what I expected from the improved concourse, and one can only hope that things will improve for connecting passengers in 2015, when the redevelopment is completed!

I'll be rolling up and buying the ticket tomorrow morning as I need flexibility.  I don't live in Exeter so unfortunately can't pop to the ticket office anyway   Undecided

Just wondering how the busy the 09.57 Paddington train is likely to be tomorrow morning - am I likely to get a seat?
Cheers  Smiley

No sorry just don't fancy having to stand for an hour but we should be likely to get a seat!

Surely most people travel by car ; and the train I am travelling on leaves Exeter at 09.54 - I don't know wether to go for it or not?

I'm not sure if the train will be packed towards Paddington in the morning if it is mainly people coming from the West going home.  I would have thought they would wait until later before going home.

the Icelandic ash cloud isn't going to mean tomorrow's Paddington line trains from Exeter will be packed, I hope?  Huh

Thanks for the replies.

How long is the walk (in miles) and how long will it take (hours/minutes)

Look forward to replies

Many thanks

I am more interested in the section of the journey on HST (High Speed Train) from Exeter St D - Westbury and vice versa but may consider using the SWT (South West Trains) service - thanks for that!

Euston to Paddington shouldn't be too bad - just take the Circle Line tube to Euston Square and it's a short walk from there - go for that option!

Hi

I am looking for a day out on Saturday in Bradford-on-Avon and was wondering will there be enough to do and if it is a nice town to visit?

I will hopefully be travelling on the 09:54 Exeter St David's to Westbury, arriving at 10:59, changing to the 11:08 Westbury to Bradford-on-Avon, arriving 11:19 and return on the 15:47 Bradford-on-Avon to Westbury, arriving 16:01, changing to the 16:23 Westbury to Exeter St David's, arriving 17:33.

My other question is are any of these trains likely to be busy or am I pretty much guaranteed a seat on all of these trains (I am especially concerned about the long distance trains)

Look forward to replies - Many thanks

Day after the snow (22nd December) managed to get back to Exeter perfectly on time, despite snow to just north of Tiverton!

Thanks for all the suggestions!

On 21st December took the train from Honiton to Basingstoke about 10 am and arrived around 12 pm and upon arrival in Basingstoke found there was very little snow and that - no offense to anyone from Basingstoke - it wasn't particularly attractive.  After around 5 minutes standing outside Basingstoke station discussing what to do we decided to catch the train to Reading.  We were very disspointed as it started to rain as we left Basingstoke, however as we approached Reading West it began to snow! after arrival in Reading we took a Reading Buses bus to Emmer Green, where my relatives live.  after about an hour we realised that we wouldn't be able to travel back to Honiton that evening as the hill into Reading was impassable - it featured on the BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) News that evening and that Reading Buses had suspended all services.  The snow continued to fall until after Midnight and by morning around 15 cm had fallen - we woke to a beautiful winter wonderland!  We travelled home to Exeter on the 1432 from Reading to Exeter St Davids (Paddington - Penzance service) and then changed in Exeter for a train to Feniton - what an adventure!

Thanks for the help.  No snow in Devon or Cornwall but keep the suggestions flowing
