Axminster layout to be 'right hand running'
Took a (delayed) trip down to Axminster today, and noticed in amongst all the new signage directions 'over the footbridge for Exeter and the West'.
Thought this might be a mistake, so given the number of SWT▸ managers about I thought I'd get the facts. What they've worked out is that the curves approaching from the north and south of the new layout make it easier to have a fast approach (ie at the 85mph line speed) into what are logically the wrong platforms - and the slower routes through the points will be used by departing trains as they accelerate away from their station calls.
There will be the odd down trains that will use the current platform at start and end of service, but during most of the day when trains cross at Axminster, they will be in what would normally considered the wrong platforms, IYSWIM. Hopefully the PIS▸ and announcements will be clear about this...

Journey by Journey / Chiltern Railways services / Re: Chiltern Evergreen 3 - Further new Track Access Agreement Application

Edit: It can only be the mainline part of Evergreen 3 that could be signed off so far, as Bicester - Oxford still has to go through the TWA Order approval procedures?
Paul
Despite the Chiltern Railway's Franchise Agreement requiring the process to be completed by 1st December 2009, as of today, there has been no financial sign-off or agreement between DfT» , Network Rail and Chiltern Railways in relation to any part of Evergreen 3. None of the parties involved is willing to say when, or if, this will happen. The Transport & Works Act Order for the Bicester-Oxford (Phase 2) upgrade is also running late and is not due to be submitted now until early January 2010. I must admit I had my doubts as well which is why I added the above Edit - I'm wondering if the 'signed off' story was simply based on the Network Rail track access application consultation deadline being passed. All that meant, as I see it, was that the paperwork was passed to ORR» ... Paul

All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture - related rail and other transport issues / More electrification announced...

... and same old stuff confirmed again Pre Budget report text states: ...the Government will: proceed with a ^1.1 billion rail electrification programme for the Great Western Main Line and Liverpool to Manchester. A further announcement on electrification will be made shortly, and the Government will also continue to evaluate the case for electrification of the Midland Main Line from London to Sheffield; But what Darling actually said was: "Work is now underway on Crossrail, the Thameslink project, and from this month, the upgrade of the M1. All this work will continue. So will the rail electrification programmes for the Great Western Main Line and the North West announced in July.
"I can tell the House today that I have also given the go-ahead to further plans for rail electrification between Liverpool, Manchester and Preston. The SoS for Transport will announce further details shortly." It looks as though that may allow for a more direct route for Manchester - Scotland trains, there have been some stories recently about electric stock being used for this as well as Manchester - Liverpool. It's difficult to pin down, but according to the XC▸ franchise ITT▸ as issued, the requirement was to provide the extra seating through the west midlands (in the peaks only) by June 2010. This seems to be why they can reduce the HST▸ lengths at the moment, but they ought to be reinstated for next summer.

They only have four diagrams normally, except for Friday evening during the summer when an additional train ran south to position itself for a Saturday morning service from Newquay.
So four diagrams from 5 trains is in fact the normal situation. What has changed is that each set has had coach D removed.

Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: Southampton Tunnel Closure News
|
on: December 07, 2009, 21:35:17

A post of mine to the SWT▸ group, I went over to Southampton to see how the weekday single line working turned out... Fareham 1054 to Woolston (about 1110 IIRC▸ ) on the SN service ex Brighton, which carried on ECS▸ down to St Denys to reverse. Waited for the following SWT stopper at 1124, arrived at St Denys 1130 ish.
Then a leisurely walk over the footbridge to catch the 1134 onward to Southampton Central failed miserably, because driver and guard of the 159 from Romsey decided to head off on the normal timings, ie 1131. SWT management present rustled up four taxis to Central pretty sharpish. You'd assume the train crew had been advised of the temporary timings - the PIS▸ had definitely been changed...
Train movements in up and down directions from Southampton, including a number of freight services, were basically happening on time, although FGW▸ were having one of their 'bad hair days', with arrivals in both directions around midday being well off schedule. The 1207 ex Cardiff arriving about 1300, with pax transferring to the following 1307. 1310 to Cardiff arrived about 17 down ex Fratton, and the 1410 started at Southampton having laid over for about an hour in the up goods loop.
You don't normally notice so much how the trains run in directional groups in the normal timetable, but it is far more obvious with single line working. For example around 1310 onwards the FGW Portsmouth, the SN Victoria, the XC▸ Man Picc and an EWS▸ container train (waiting in platform 4) all left one after the other as the signals cleared, it all looked pretty efficent to me. Got me wondering if the normal timetable is already set up to allow for short periods of SLW?
Returned on the 1412 Victoria service with no issues, and got a reasonable view of the tunnel, despite the rain covered train windows. There has been a huge change over the weekend. It is the up line that remains in normal use, but there is now a big space where the down side ballast used to be, with men working in it as trains passed. Surprised to see that much of the exposed floor appears to be concrete slab already - I wonder if this dates from the previous work in 1981? Excavation proceeding at both portals, and a train of engineers trucks between the east end of the site and Northam Junction appears to be a source of materials such as precast slabs.
Passed another SN unit between Mount Pleasant crossing and St Denys, sitting on the down slow, waiting to form the next departure form Woolston, I assume it followed my train through St Denys, via the crossover to the down fast.
Hope this of interest...

Interestingly enough... When Virgin were in charge... on a good day, you could do Bristol Temple Meads > Newcastle in 4hrs 55mins... Now with AXC» in charge... it now takes a minimum of 6 hours Really? The next few direct trains are 5h01, 5h07, 5h04. Maybe you've been looking up engineering diversions or something... Paul

24 hour delay now admitted to on National Rail enquiries: "Because of overrunning engineering work, buses will replace trains between Yeovil Junction and Honiton all day on Monday 7 December.
It is hoped that the line will reopen on Tuesday 8 December, although this is not yet confirmed - please check back nearer to the time of travel." Paul
