961  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Infrastructure problems in Thames Valley causing disruption elsewhere - ongoing, since Oct 2014 on: August 02, 2018, 19:26:50
I've just been keeping an eye on the OTT (Open Train Times website) maps in the Twyford area and I noticed something a little strange just now as the attached screenshot shows. 1C25 (18.00 PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains)-BRI» (Bristol Temple Meads - next trains)) and 1R06 (17.57 PAD-RDG(resolve)) were held on the DR while 1K93 (18.03 PAD-THE) was routed via the UR to call at P4. While all this was happening, 1A27 (17.10 WSM-PAD) was later held for a few minutes on the UM at Twyford West. This all seems to be something of a kerfuffle which caused further delay to already late trains (1C25 went from being 27L to 41L according to RTT» (Real Time Trains - website)). Presumably this was done to benefit connecting Henley Branch passengers but why hold so many other trains while the route was set all the way from Twyford East to West?

FIRE onboard a powercar of 1A24 I understand from an earlier post from bobm causing disruption.

M2 timetable now up on travelinesw website (http://www.travelinesw.com). No Sunday services for shoppers, is this still the parish council of north somerset still being obstinate and still refusing to remove the covenant that prevents the LA P&R (Park and Ride) being used on Sundays, one plus though. later services together with the busway will allow football and rugby fans to park there and travel to Ashton Gate and return to their cars after matches by Metrobus. One thing that puzzles me, will the P&R still be locked up after services cease daily or is that a thing of the past which will allow fans to park up there on a Sunday and walk along the busway to / from  the Ashton Gate encounter.

964  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: IETs into passenger service from 16 Oct 2017 and subsequent performance issues on: August 02, 2018, 09:01:53
Isn't it also down to the fact that 5-car units were procured instead of 9-car units. ...

The overall fleet will be a mixture of 5 and 9 car units - designed as such so that a mixture can be used getting the right length trains on the right service.   However, just about all the 5 car 800s were delivered before any 9 cars arrived, resulting in 5+5 trains being run where 9 cars will become the norm, with the temporary extra crew issues.

And promises have been made in the past for the future and when the future came to pass where were those promises ?

Sad thing for me is that the travelling public will largely blame the new technology for these problems (50% of trains locked OOU (out of use) etc) when it's all down to a good old-fashioned (and I mean old-fashioned) industrial dispute  Angry

Really !

Isn't it also down to the fact that 5-car units were procured instead of 9-car units. In the event that an emergency alarm is activated by a passenger in the 5-car set NOT occupied by a competent member of staff, the sole competent member of staff other than the driver would have to detrain and walk to the other set and make an entrance there to investigate the emergency leaving the driver to do his duty to prep the train for moving on when it is safe/cleared to do so.
966  Journey by Journey / North Downs Line / New through service - Gatwick Airport to London Paddington ? on: August 02, 2018, 07:49:52
Just checking if there are any engineering works that would hamper my and 5 family members trip to Warminster for ImberBus on Saturday 18th of this month and I noticed on the GWR (Great Western Railway) website PDF file ;-

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday – The 0600 Gatwick Airport to London Paddington service will start from Redhill.
Please travel on an EARLIER train between Gatwick Airport and Redhill to connect with the train.

Through train Gatwick Airport - London Paddington. Really ? Would be interesting what routing would be used if true and used quickest route, (Gatwick Airport) - Redhill - Clapham Junction - Kensington Olympia - Acton Wells Junction - Acton Main Line - West Ealing - Greenford East Junction - Park Royal - London Paddington. Any others ?

Just watched a cyclists video of his ride along the Ashton Metrobus Guided Busway, the work of graffiti artists can clearly be seen already on the bridge section.
968  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: MetroBus on: August 01, 2018, 20:22:40
One very big Czech HGV got lost on the M32 this afternoon and ended up exiting the M32 on the bus only exit and only just managed to negotiate the bus exit route. A very exasperated Czech driver was happily put on the right track to the ring road by motorists travelling down Stoke Lane. Probably he was obeying his sat-nav which told him to, in Czech, "take next exit", and couldn't read the English "Buses Only" and translate same into Czech.
969  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: 165/166s on this route on: August 01, 2018, 07:01:47
Am I correct though in recalling that GWR (Great Western Railway) have claimed that the Turbos will be refitted in due course with four across seats?

Yea, I recall that too, it was supposed to happen when the transfer of the 165/166 that were coming west was complete and the units went for a major overhaul. With the financial state First Group seem to be in at the mo this may however have been put on the "back-burner".
970  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Name of the fastest line from London to Plymouth on: July 30, 2018, 05:26:42
Call it the Cornish Mainline and be done with it,

I've always known the line through Newbury as the Berks and Hants, wasn't this because the line ran through part of Hampshire but lost its Hampshire neighbourliness under the 1974 Local Government Act which saw Didcot transfer to Oxfordshire from Berkshire and the birth of Avon, now deceased of course.
971  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Tardis - the latest way to travel around Bristol? on: July 28, 2018, 19:15:02
Next WECA» (West of England Combined Authority - about) meeting is Friday 28 September - it will be where WECA will publish the consultation draft of the Joint Local Transport Plan.

Expect more MetroBust, following the soaraway success of the one that actually opened.

That should read ;-

Expect more MetroBust, following the "soaraway success" of the one that actually opened.

Actually mention was made at the WECA meeting of a deal being done to provide some support to First to operate the Long Ashton - South Bristol Link Road - Hengrove section and for making an approach to the charity that will be running the M1 route to run the 10 which is being abandoned by the withdrawal of Wessex from September.

973  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: IETs into passenger service from 16 Oct 2017 and subsequent performance issues on: July 27, 2018, 08:08:19
20 half length services today, yes a FRIDAY.

I may be talking slightly out of turn here ... but if 5 car IETs (Intercity Express Train) were to be used on the diagrams from which that Adelantes (class 180) were withdrawn a short while back, would there still be a problem?   Looking at where there are short formations, though, they do appear to be different diagrams to the old Adelante ones, with some seriously busy services involved.

Would be sensible but then ASLEF» (Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen - about) / NUR will probably not allow it as Worcester / Hereford drivers had received training on only 9 car IETs. and South Wales / Bristol drivers only received training on 5 / 2X5 car IETs.

975  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: More dangerous overcrowding to the Westcountry on: July 26, 2018, 20:44:05
In my college days services to the west in rush hours used to skip a stop at Reading and ran non stop to Didcot / Swindon / Newbury forcing pax to use other services. My home run on a Friday used to be local all stops Slough to Didcot, Red Dragon, Didcot to Swindon then Paddington - WSM from Swindon (first stop). Sunday return was Bristol - Reading then local service to Slough.

I once did a Bristol - Slough using all stops services, Bristol TM(resolve) - Bath, Bath to Swindon, Swindon - Didcot, Didcot - Slough, took me about 5 hours.
