All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Taking the bus from Reading to Henley-on-Thames. A tale of woe.

Having been caught out by this sort of nonsense before and stood freezing at a bus stop, I sympathise. I diligently checked the operator's website and social media channels while my fingers would still operate my phone and... nothing published. To cut a long story short a road closure had diverted the buses. The lack of information was inexcusble.
I pursued all avenues of complaint and eventually ended up at Transport Focus, I think. They awarded me a £10 voucher.
It certainly was an experience to make the railway look fantastic.

Just to say that if an RRB▸ turns up and doesn't have wheelchair access, a taxi or other accessible transport will be arranged via the Help Point/Bus Co-ordinator/TOC▸ for the customer requiring it, but we weren't talking about that scenario...
I fully understand why JayMac wants to avoid RRBs with Finn for the reasons given. I've witnessed pretty much every possible outcome from outright refusal, OK but not on the seats and even GWR▸ arranging a taxi for the customer with a canine friend.
I've seen coach drivers refuse full sized cycles to assisting the customer slinging it underneath (not impossible).
I've refused full sized cycles on a regular service bus when I was a driver, which was company policy (I'd do it anyway unless it could be secured/strapped).

It does seem that "car" is only used to describe the length of a train, otherwise it's coach or carriage. Shows how sometimes it's easy to cause misunderstanding by not using precise language, but sometimes there's many ways to say the same thing. Funny old thing, the English language.
Mind, these user to be buffet CARs in the past, before their daft removal. I would have credited that post to another member if I'd not just seen your forum name grahame The SWR» platform auto-announcers got re-recorded some time back and 'carriages' was substituted for 'coaches'. I think 'coaches' sounds more natural and is also consistent with the on-board displays. 'Carriages' reminds me of Annie & Clarabel from Thomas the Tank Engine!

I've voted for travelling by rail less. I've been quite lucky - where I've committed money to accommodation it's been refundable (normally slightly more expensive than base prices) and I've not had to cancel. I've also had the coach in mind as a backup, but not needed it.
A friend of mine has a canny knack of suggesting meeting up on strike days before they're announced, one of which I circumvented by getting 3 buses each-way when it would have been a direct train, but I wouldn't do that out of choice due to comfort/time wasted. I usually enjoy travelling by bus, but not for extended periods of time.
I've got non-refundable accommodation booked for 1 night in October (it was a bargain I couldn't resist) and have already researched alternatives in case the worst happens and my luck totally runs out.
Until this dispute is resolved I wont be committing funds to accommodation for medium/long distance trips, where I can't get my money back or cancel at short notice.

And not so past - our local Tesco was built with one in it 25 years ago. Not required for the original purpose of these things, of course, but I think to start with payments by cheque could be sent off via the tubes. It was in use until ten years ago, for decanting cash from the tills and some mysterious transaction when the operators changed over. Maybe it's still used, though these days I don't suppose they take in enough cash for risk reduction to be needed.
A long time ago I used the "till pick up" when working at Tesco. Tills could be unloaded of cash and scannable coupons in tubes with a black lid at any time and often the till would prompt you to do this as it knew its contents. The "End of Day" cash, cheques and scannable coupons would go into a tube with a red lid and everything else into a green cloth bag (which one of my newer colleagues attempted to stuff down the hole once before I intervened)! Certainly when I worked there you didn't have to do any of these when a colleague took over, but it probably was polite to if the till was fullish to save them a job.

I got a whole load of these through the post when a fledgling third party retailer beginning with T was regularly offering 50% off. If I recall it could be combined with a railcard discount so worked out dirt cheap even if I didn't take some of the anticipated trips.
A lot of the journeys were short hops, so quite a few guards were surprised when I produced this style of ticket.
Any journey involving the tube would be provided with an APTIS▸ gate pass in the envelope.

Provision must be made for those that need help and this can be achieved via getting people out of ticket offices into a wider ranging customer service role, on the platform/concourse/gateline.
Depending on the station setup, wouldn't another situation to get people out from "behind the glass" be just to remove the glass? That way people can still be served in turn rather than potentially swamping them in a random order on the station?
