New Brunel attraction in Bristol gets ^4.5m in lottery funding

Being Brunel musuem, Bristol

More than ^4.5m has been awarded to the ss Great Britain Trust for an Isambard Kingdom Brunel museum in Bristol.
The ^7.1m attraction, set to open alongside the ss Great Britain in 2017, will display Brunel's personal papers and possessions for the first time.

Brunel's office, where plans for the ss Great Britain were drawn up, will also be restored as part of the project.
Rhian Tritton, from the trust, said the funding allows them "to tell the story of Brunel in the way it deserves".

More than 14,000 items, pulled from the University of Bristol's Brunel Collection, along with thousands of artefacts from a private collector are due to go on show at the new "Being Brunel" museum.

Among the "never-before-seen" documents and personnel possessions will be Brunel's "last cigar", his sketchbooks and a drawing of a horse created by the engineer at the age of six.

"We've got the most significant collection of Brunel material in public hands anywhere in the world" said Ms Tritton.
"We have a hugely important private collection as well and that collection contains some of the most resonant private possessions of Brunel."

Following the Heritage Lottery Funding (HLF) award, the trust still needs to raise an additional ^670,000 to complete the project.

Due to launch Easter 2017, the new museum is expected to attract more than 200,000 visitors annually.

the equipment in the Cogload Junction to Flax Bourton (125mp) area which will not be changed as it is outside of the electrified area.
Did I read that right? A 125mph section which is not included in the scope of the electrification project?

Its 125 mile post from London (which is near the site of the closed Flax Bourton station).  I have edited my original post to clarify it.
2666  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Bristol Temple Meads Station redevelopment on: June 13, 2015, 22:31:19
I'm here....... Cheesy

The Bristol area resignalling extends to replacing the existing interlockings and trackside equipment (excluding signals which will be reused where possible).  This is due to the existing equipment not being AC Immune and hence not immune to 25Kv AC electrification.  The exception to this will be the equipment in the Cogload Junction to Flax Bourton (125 mile post from London) area which will not be changed as it is outside of the electrified area.  The track layouts will not be changed.  This is therefore a part resignalling and part re-control project.

The bases for new trackside equipment cases and rooms are being installed now but the detailed design and build of them is somewhat behind schedule.

The 'new' signalling will be controlled from Thames Valley Signalling Centre (TVSC» (Thames Valley Signalling Centre - about)) at Didcot (which is going to be renamed at some point in the future).  All existing Bristol signals that are numbered Bxxx will be renumbered BLxxxx.  Track circuits will be replaced by axle counters.  The existing 'X' signs that divide the platforms into two parts at Temple Meads station will in future be divided by proper 'back to back' signals.

Bristol Panel will be abolished and demolished to make way for the new terminating platforms but currently this is planned as a second stage of the project.

It looks as if Swindon Panel will be abolished either in October 2015 or over Xmas/New Year 2015/6.  Watch this space.
2667  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Great Western Main Line electrification - ongoing discussion on: June 13, 2015, 22:13:36
To reach Trowbridge station would have involved another 'right direction' signal being interlocked for the reversing movement.  Remember in the 1980s/1990s BR (British Rail(ways)) was strapped for cash and all schemes were carried out to the absolute minimum requirements necessary, hence the current layout.  To change it now would probably be in the ^100,000s and there is probably no business case.
2668  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Great Western Main Line electrification - ongoing discussion on: June 13, 2015, 15:17:39
We discussed this before (somewhere) and the answer is No.  The signalling does't allow it.  The only way would be to run through to Westbury and turnback there.
