13246  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Trains without retention tanks spray human effluent over railway trackside workers on: February 15, 2011, 20:41:33
While the discharge of toilets directly onto the tracks is potentially unpleasant,

Extremely unpleasant if you are a track-worker standing in the cess when a discharging toilet on a HST (High Speed Train) goes by, particularly if on the outside of a curve.

I remember reading somewhere about a photter who'd also been subject to a short sharp shower of sh1t whilst standing next to an occupation crossing gate on a max speed section of the ECML (East Coast Main Line), again on the outside of a curve. I think it happened to him more than once. I think I'd've learnt after the first shower not to stand so close to the line when a HST was approaching!
13247  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Keeping the price of your rail travel down. on: February 15, 2011, 17:11:28
Err, that's from Didcot to Chippenham where there are no evening restrictions!
13248  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Thames branches day ranger on: February 15, 2011, 17:00:51
The information provided by National Rail Enquiries appears to suggest, by omission, that the TBDR is not valid on Heathrow Connect, as it only lists First Great Western under 'Train Companies'.

The TBDR is also not listed under 'Special Offers' for Heathrow Connect on NRE(resolve) either.

As to the logos on the Heathrow Connect units, that'd be First Group's stylised 'f' and not any FGW (First Great Western) branding.
13249  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Keeping the price of your rail travel down. on: February 15, 2011, 16:47:29
It's fine. Graham quoted the Standard Day Single from Paddington to Didcot which was, at the time of the post ^24.00.
13250  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Advance Fares - Cotswold Line on: February 15, 2011, 15:09:40
CrossCountry, Virgin and SWT (South West Trains) do not allow Standard Advance holders to upgrade.

13251  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Advance Fares - Cotswold Line on: February 15, 2011, 14:56:52
Yes you can. From FGW (First Great Western) website:

Quote
You can buy in advance at ticket offices and on board High Speed services. However, please note that Weekend First is not available in advance to holders of advance tickets; these tickets can, however, be upgraded on board, subject to availability.
13252  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Advance Fares - Cotswold Line on: February 15, 2011, 14:44:55
The only advance fares in the LTV (London [and] Thames Valley) area are on PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains)<>OXF» (Oxford - next trains) standard class only.

At the weekend/bank holiday splitting at Oxford and combining with Weekend First can make the fare a bit more agreeable to/from Worcester or Hereford.

As an example, travelling this Saturday on the 1213 HST (High Speed Train) from Hereford:

HFD» (Hereford - next trains)-OXF Off Peak Day Single ^19.80
OXF-PAD Standard Advance ^4.00
Weekend First upgrade ^15.00

Total: ^38.80.

That's only a fiver more than the through Standard fare and half the price of the through First Class fare.

Indeed you could have, and saved yourself booking, postage and card fees.  Wink

13255  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Advance Fares - Cotswold Line on: February 15, 2011, 11:23:34
There are advance fares from Waterloo to Weymouth and Exeter with SWT (South West Trains).

London Midland offer advances to Northampton.

Southern offer advances to many destinations on their network.

Chiltern offer advances along their routes.
13256  Journey by Journey / Cross Country services / Re: Crosscountry trains - HST or Voyager? on: February 15, 2011, 11:10:39
According to the booking engine, you are indeed booked onto one of CrossCountry's HST (High Speed Train) sets.

CrossCountry only have 5 HST sets versus 57 Vomiter units!
13257  Journey by Journey / London to Swindon and Bristol / Re: 18:30 Pad to Wsm on: February 14, 2011, 22:21:17
Yes a Turbo could go to BRI» (Bristol Temple Meads - next trains), but I very much doubt there are any LTV (London [and] Thames Valley) drivers out there who have up to date route knowledge.
13258  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Tickets & Railcards: problems with fading ink/magnetic strips (merged topic, ongoing discussion) on: February 14, 2011, 21:12:46
Barely visible! A bit over officious from the ticket clerk at Temple Meads. Try again another day with a different clerk.

Now, my DSB railcard was replaced by post without me even needing to surrender the badly faded old one!

HOTR (High Output Track Renewal)?
13260  Journey by Journey / London to Swindon and Bristol / Re: 18:30 Pad to Wsm on: February 14, 2011, 20:17:07
Must be an error.

It's surely not even possible for a two car unit substitute for a HST (High Speed Train) from Paddington to Bristol. Turbos don't go beyond Didcot and west DMUs (Diesel Multiple Unit) not beyond Swindon. There'd be a distinct lack of route and traction knowledge!
