16  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: "No tickets available" - Melksham to Didcot on: October 16, 2021, 21:41:45
A few weeks ago when my son tried to buy a ticket online from Dorchester West to Bristol, to connect with the tickets he managed to buy no problem Temple Meads to Birmingham International, he got the fully booked message (from DCW to BRI» (Bristol Temple Meads - next trains)? never knew that was bookable) anyway, I told him just to get on the train at Dorchester and pay the guard. No problem, he said the train was nearly empty.

A few years ago, I witnessed a guard on a Weymouth train sort out a released prisoner's warrant on the train and got the passenger to Bristol apparently without too much trouble.

I saw one coming through Axminster, in the town centre, on its way to Portsmouth, in the first week of advertised operation, haven't seen one since.

I was recently disappointed when a local business owner, who I have informed on a couple of occasions that they had undercharged me, told me that during the first lockdown she used the same return ticket four times Axminster to Southampton as there were no on-train checks. She was only "caught" on the last journey as the gateline was closed and she told the staff that she was unable to buy a ticket, she was sent to the ticket office to pay, offered to pay, in cash, only from Salisbury, was told it was card only, said she had left her card at home which met with the response "It's your lucky day then". Gone down in my estimation.

I'm stuck on five, but I'll keep trying all the time that it's raining and I can put off walking up to the road to collect the emptied bins.

I think the reference to newspapers is in regards to piles of free newspapers available on buses and trains, which get picked up, put down, picked up again by another person, put down again, ad infinitum.
26  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Fines for drivers caught dropping passengers outside designated zones on: April 12, 2020, 13:23:28
These are not fines. Only a court can fine someone.

These are penalty charges for breaching the terms of an implied contract.

I disagree...

Dennis is the usual spelling of the boy's name in the Netherlands, and the Netherlands joined the storm naming group this year.
28  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Westbury North Junction Renewal December 2018 - January 2019 on: January 04, 2019, 18:01:06
Apologies for my earlier message, the one I was on at the time was the one I was talking about, I now see that the the question was about a train that was nowhere near!
29  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Westbury North Junction Renewal December 2018 - January 2019 on: January 04, 2019, 13:04:16
It didn't go through Westbury station, took the curve and reversed onto Westbury avoiding line.
30  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Teaching people how to open doors on: November 27, 2018, 17:21:02
I seem to remember that when HSTs (High Speed Train) were first introduced there was an aluminium plate on the inside of the door covering the space where an internal handle would have been. It would therefore, surely, be a very simple matter to fit handles inside, now that they have central door locking.
