Nellie a disaster.
182  All across the Great Western territory / Smoke and Mirrors / Station codes on: October 10, 2013, 06:09:24
I think that BTM (Bristol Temple Meads (strictly, it should be BRI)) is a readily understandable acronym and does not necessarily have to be intended as a station code. I frequently receive a text from my better half saying 'meet at btm about 12' which I redily understand, whereas if she suddenly started texting 'BRI» (Bristol Temple Meads - next trains) I would immediately know that she had secretly joined this forum.
183  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: From the station home on: October 09, 2013, 07:37:29
I have responded with 'walk' but I must add that I did use the 234 bus a few times during First's totally unpublished (at the station anyway) recent year of terminating at Frome station before reverting to Sainsbury's due to 'lower than expected usage'.
184  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Plus bus plus Rover on: October 08, 2013, 20:29:11
Thank you all, it doesn't look like my plan to Bath will work then!
185  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Plus bus plus Rover on: October 08, 2013, 09:46:57
I know that a Plusbus ticket can be bought separately from the rail ticket (if a valid rail ticket is held) but does anyone know whether one can be bought by the holder of a Rover?
186  Journey by Journey / Wales local journeys / Re: Explore South Wales rover ticket .. very good value on: October 06, 2013, 08:01:03
Recently my brother and I met up at our parents' after travelling to Dorchester. He paid ^65.20 for an off peak return from Malvern Link. I paid ^69 for Severn & Solent rover 8/15 and spent the rest of the fortnight visiting everybody. I could have used it to Malvern Link, but I'd already seen him!
187  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / Re: What happened at Dorchester West (DCW) in 2006? on: September 23, 2013, 19:54:49
Thank you for all the input to this thread,  I didn't really expect all this feedback, I'll keep fingers, toes, legs and knickers crossed!

Surely by now someone must have designed a loco that can either diesel generate its power or run the motors from the available AC or DC (Direct Current) supply?
189  All across the Great Western territory / Media about railways, and other means of transport / Re: "London to Brighton in four minutes" - the second remake on: September 23, 2013, 18:45:47
I would think that it was probably the 1953 edition that I can remember watching at Hassocks School in early  60's, just outside Clayton tunnel, but I always thought that the train was going down the wrong track! Assume that they could only put a camera on the rear of the train and then play it backwards.
190  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: HS2 - Government proposals, alternative routes and general discussion on: September 23, 2013, 18:33:35
Cancel the whole thing,  we've already put a couple of billions in to the West Coast Main Line,  Why do so many people want to commute between London and Birmingham?  Maybe put the money in to a train that can get you frome Frome to Yeovil in time for work?
191  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: Semi-cryptic Picture Sequence Quiz (September 2013) *Complete* on: September 23, 2013, 16:39:35
I must admit that I loved the Thorpe Culvert one, my nearest station when I lived in Firsby, and some bright spark had the (supposedly good) idea of closing   Firsby Station.
192  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / Re: What happened at Dorchester West (DCW) in 2006? on: September 23, 2013, 15:36:24
Thanks for your reply, I'm a bit disappointed though, I thought we might be able to use the figures to fight for a much improved service between Dorchester and Frome!
193  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / What happened at Dorchester West (DCW) in 2006? on: September 23, 2013, 14:09:43
I have often wondered what occurred at Dorchester West around 2006/07 that increased the footfall from 172 to 65,961 in the space of 12 months? I was living at West Bay and working in Weymouth at the time but I don't remember it being mentioned in the Dorset Echo that someone had suddenly had a bright idea such as removing the barbed wire from the station gate!

Just in case anybody was wondering what kind of numskull you have on the forum now who would put Strawberry Hill for No. 1, I was doing it on my phone and thought that it COULD have been straw that was breaking the camel's back and it COULD have been some kind of berry that was the round green item. Thank you very much for giving me a second attempt once I got home and could take a closer look!
